Its Keir Starmer, not Kier Starmer

Why do some posters constantly fail to be able to spell his name correctly? Surely we have noticed our PM is Keir after all this time? There is no such name as "Kier".

I just saw this on the magazine shelf in M&S while I was buying tonight's curry!
Name calling all the world over.

😁

We're having curry courtesy of M&S tonight too.
Definitely not a Maccy D!

Anyone remember this?

It's Liza with a "Z" not Lisa with an "S" cause Lisa with an "S" goes snoz Its Z instead of S, Li instead of Lee it's simple as could be see Liza!
Now if my name were Ada, I'd be Ada even backwards I'd be Ada, and if my name were Ruth than I'd be Ruth because with Ruth what can you do? Or Sally or Margaret or Ginger or Faye but when your a Liza, you always have to say, no it's Liza with a "Z" not Lisa with an "S" cause Lisa with an "S" goes snoz Its Z instead of S, Li instead of Lee it's simple as could be see Liza!
Oh! and that is only half of it, there's another way they treat me cruely, how often I remember someone saying "There she goes Lisa Minoulli, or Minolli or Miniola or Minilli or Minillie, so is it a wonder I very often cry! It's M I double N then E double L I you double up the N that's "n" not Lou then E double the L end it with an I that's the way you say Minelli, Liza Minelli, it's easy, it's easy...see it's Lizi....no..... L I Z A

For as long as I have the right to freedom of speech, I will continue to be as rude, disrespectful or disparaging about any politicians that I disagree with. Just as you were as was I and many others about Truss, BoJo, Cummings and Hancock. Difference being that I don't recall seeing you being outraged about the totally disrespectful vitriol playground bullying then. Wonder what's changed? hmm

Well said 👏

Yes it's worthy of a thread. Can't stand it when people talk about Weatherspoons.

Same here!

Be prepared for more tedium then Maybee70 as Keir hasn’t made a great start.
All PM’s have to be prepared for flak coming their way as do their supporters.

totally disrespectful vitriol playground bullying

Bit stronger than ‘finding it a bit tedious’ me thinks.

Imo people are being totally disrespectful of the PM by constantly spelling his name wrong. I’ve never known such vitriol aimed at a new PM who, imo, has done nothing to deserve it. Ok Truss was ridiculed but she did crash the economy. It smacks of people jumping on a bandwagon; almost like playground bullying. I don’t understand it and I really am trying to distance myself from gransnet these days.

Posters are allowed to express an opinion of their PM and even if you don’t like the opinions expressed, they’re still allowed to express them.

I never said people couldn’t express their opinion. Just pointed out that I’m finding it a bit tedious.

Kier or Kieran - an Irish name.

'Kier is a masculine name of Irish origin. A variant of Kieran, this name comes from the Irish name Ciarán and the Old Irish word cíar‎, meaning “dark” or “swarthy.”'

Keir Starmer is called after Keir Hardie so the Scottish version is obviously the correct one. I really don't think you can look at rules and logic in the English language as there are far too many linguistic roots.
Tier / weir / sheer / shear / mere - all homophones.
You just have to learn to spell the name correctly.

I live and learn, no, I wasn't aware of it as a name. Well, I'd heard Kieran of course, but never checked the spelling.

Ok Truss was ridiculed and that's OK in your book, you didn't feel any need to question that? I hold no cause for Truss but transposing the i and e in Keir Starmer's name is hardly totally disrespectful as I doubt any of it is done purposely.
Comparing her to a lettuce was done purposely to disrespect her and she (briefly) held the same office as Starmer.

Did you object to the various nicknames purposely assigned to previous PMs?

Does it distress you when other people have their name misspelled?

With all the wars, hunger, extreme weather events etc going on in the world this really is very minor.

I really don't think maybee was having a go at dyslexics, its not been mentioned before?

My simple O/P request (out of a degree of frustration) has certainly taken some strange directions.

I do try and get the right spelling for names when we are in political discussions, with some difficulty at times (as I said above, is it Badenhoch or Badenock or Badenoch, is it Jenrick or Jenwick)

to keep on topic not a series of one-liners which sometimes just leads to spats.

I expect that's the problem. You're not sure about the spelling of Kemi Badenoch or Robert Jenrick so you probably check before posting if referring to either. People that are spelling Keir as Kier don't need to check as they're confident they're spelling it correctly. Your assertion there is no such name as 'Kier' is absolutely wrong there is a surname spelled this way, and many a surname gets used as a forename over time. People used to spelling tier might well expect a name that rhymes with that word to be spelt Kier, it's fairly logical.

Wyllow3 Sat 26-Oct-24 15:40:08

Oh, Ok -a valid point.

Allira Sat 26-Oct-24 15:35:29

I wasn't having a go at anyone in particular either but just explaining that some people are dyslexic and they may have difficulty with names in particular.

Some people are dyslexic.

It is wrong to get annoyed with them.

Actually, in a free society, it's perfectly okay to be disrespectful of the PM. We are not in a tyrannical dictatorship.

Yet.

PMs have always been given nicknames.

In this case it is usually a simple misspelling, not derogatory at all and nothing to get wound up about, by many who were taught that i comes before e with certain exceptions. That was, in all probability, before Keir Starmer was born.

Anyway, why is no-one getting hot under the collar because he's not being addressed by his correct title as he is a KCB?

I thought the origin of the name stuff was quite interesting, but some of the thread is a bit weird. (Please note the spelling). 😂😂😂

wierd, Mamei as any schoolboy no.
