Its Keir Starmer, not Kier Starmer

Why do some posters constantly fail to be able to spell his name correctly? Surely we have noticed our PM is Keir after all this time? There is no such name as "Kier".

TerriBull Fri 25-Oct-24 10:17:53

I can only assume it's the i before e, that generally prevails, but not guilty! I've been aware for many a year it's Keir, but then we have a Canadian relative with that name.

Witzend Fri 25-Oct-24 10:22:33

Goodness knows, Wyllow3 - it’s something that does often make me wonder!

On a similar theme, I’ve previously seen threads about butter, where posters say they love Lurpack and won’t buy anything else. So if they’ve bought dozens of packs of it, how come they still can’t spell Lurpak?

Is this reallyworthy of a thread to itself?
It won’t be the first time there are spelling mistakes on GN and however annoying, it won’t be the last

Rosie51 Fri 25-Oct-24 10:31:28

Maybe because Kieran is spelt i before e and is more common, so it comes to mind easier? Of course Kier is a surname, so some might spell a forename that way too.
My given name is misspelled all the time, I've learned to live with it, no doubt Keir Starmer can too.
On another similar theme why do so many insist on using Kate for the Princess of Wales when her name is Catherine and she prefers to be called that? Are they not capable of spelling Catherine?

loopyloo Fri 25-Oct-24 10:32:10

Yes it's worthy of a thread. Can't stand it when people talk about Weatherspoons.

Well, some of us do sometimes like to have a little grumble about things that irk us.
If it’s SPAg related, I do usually confine mine to Pedants’ Corner though.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 25-Oct-24 10:34:34

I like how Jacob Rees Mogg alludes to him as Reverend Starmer. He’s so pious and earnest isn’t he?

OldFrill Fri 25-Oct-24 10:35:07

Should this not be poster on Pedants' Corner.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 10:35:12

There are often typos that are understandable like that one but for goodness sake we've used Keir's name enough this summer for posters to know the correct spelling. It even appeared in a thread title today.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 10:38:56

No, it's not pedantic to spell well known names properly. It's due respect for each other.
I put it in news and politics because it recurs and has been in the past used as mockery.

And JRM quoting Padre Pio and spouting Latin because he, smugly and mistakenly, thinks nobody will understand what he’s talking about is to be admired for his “piety”??!!

Calendargirl Fri 25-Oct-24 10:43:16

I find it more annoying that the Princess Of Wales is often called ‘Katherine’.

It’s Catherine with a C, not Katherine with a K.

Indigo8 Fri 25-Oct-24 10:43:49

On one GN thread, some time ago, someone wrote about Kier(sic) Starman. Presumably he had been waiting in the sky.

I think he was probably named after Keir Hardie.

I hesitate to judge as I live in a glasshouse where spelling and other correctness are concerned.

I do hope you've never referred to Catherine as Kate then Wyllow3.
How is a simple misspelling of Keir as Kier mockery, you've lost me? And interestingly my computer keeps red underlining Keir but not Kier.

Mamie Fri 25-Oct-24 10:48:13

He was named after Keir Hardie.

Yes but you’re missing the point. It’s misnaming Starmer !!!

Obviously following the rules of spelling.

escaped Fri 25-Oct-24 11:01:19

I'm assuming that, because of the suffix -ier on words, which is often pronunced as -eer, our automatic spelling of his name defaults to Kier on hearing it.
I think the sound comes from Middle French, so you get cavalier, grenadier etc. and more modern words like cashier.

I read an interesting article about KS in a German newspaper recently, and they too obviously have problems.
Starmers Vorname wird »Kier« ausgesprochen. Starmer's name is pronounced Kier.

karmalady Fri 25-Oct-24 11:02:31

pedantic as always. There are more important things to concern us than spelling

escaped Fri 25-Oct-24 11:03:07

Why are posters so touchy about KS and his saintly crew? I read on here the other day we must call them Labour, but The Government!

eazybee Fri 25-Oct-24 11:03:24

The correct title should be 'the Reverend Keir Starmer' or Mr. Starmer, not Reverend Starmer, unless Rees-Mogg is being ironic. I can't believe he does not know.
But as Starmer loudly proclaims his atheism it is irrelevant.
(And his wife is not Lady Victoria, but Victoria, Lady Starmer, courtesy of her husband's title.

loopyloo Fri 25-Oct-24 11:03:39

I thought I heard somewhere that Cate had to start spelling it Kate to differentiate her initial from the Queen's.

Many people will not really care.
