Its Keir Starmer, not Kier Starmer

On one GN thread, some time ago, someone wrote about Kier(sic) Starman. Presumably he had been waiting in the sky.

I think he was probably named after Keir Hardie.

I hesitate to judge as I live in a glasshouse where spelling and other correctness are concerned.

I find it more annoying that the Princess Of Wales is often called ‘Katherine’.

It’s Catherine with a C, not Katherine with a K.

I like how Jacob Rees Mogg alludes to him as Reverend Starmer. He’s so pious and earnest isn’t he?

And JRM quoting Padre Pio and spouting Latin because he, smugly and mistakenly, thinks nobody will understand what he’s talking about is to be admired for his “piety”??!!

No, it's not pedantic to spell well known names properly. It's due respect for each other.
I put it in news and politics because it recurs and has been in the past used as mockery.

There are often typos that are understandable like that one but for goodness sake we've used Keir's name enough this summer for posters to know the correct spelling. It even appeared in a thread title today.

Should this not be poster on Pedants' Corner.

Is this reallyworthy of a thread to itself?
It won’t be the first time there are spelling mistakes on GN and however annoying, it won’t be the last

Well, some of us do sometimes like to have a little grumble about things that irk us.
If it’s SPAg related, I do usually confine mine to Pedants’ Corner though.

Yes it's worthy of a thread. Can't stand it when people talk about Weatherspoons.

Maybe because Kieran is spelt i before e and is more common, so it comes to mind easier? Of course Kier is a surname, so some might spell a forename that way too.
My given name is misspelled all the time, I've learned to live with it, no doubt Keir Starmer can too.
On another similar theme why do so many insist on using Kate for the Princess of Wales when her name is Catherine and she prefers to be called that? Are they not capable of spelling Catherine?

Goodness knows, Wyllow3 - it’s something that does often make me wonder!

On a similar theme, I’ve previously seen threads about butter, where posters say they love Lurpack and won’t buy anything else. So if they’ve bought dozens of packs of it, how come they still can’t spell Lurpak?

TerriBull Fri 25-Oct-24 10:17:53

I can only assume it's the i before e, that generally prevails, but not guilty! I've been aware for many a year it's Keir, but then we have a Canadian relative with that name.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 10:13:33

Why do some posters constantly fail to be able to spell his name correctly? Surely we have noticed our PM is Keir after all this time? There is no such name as "Kier".
