Why do some posters constantly fail to be able to spell his name correctly? Surely we have noticed our PM is Keir after all this time? There is no such name as "Kier".

Oh, I see. HoP is an unusual abbreviation, so I didn't realise.

How does not having a bus pass explain those in the House(s) of Parliament lacking in understanding, then?

Who needs a bus pass when you can Travel claim travel expenses?

your post is about HoL members. I’m talking about MPs
See my post above.

Most people in the HoP don’t have a bus pass, but how does that explain their lack of understanding?.

Are you suggesting that most members of the HoP qualify for a free bus pass?

Don't they? TBH I have no idea of the figures for bus-pass holding Lords, and didn't know they even existed grin. I was referring to what seems to be the average age of those in the HOL, which to the naked eye looks more than old enough to qualify. What are the stats, please?

Also, in what way do the Lords not understand? Are you talking about not understanding struggles to pay fares? I didn't know they'd been asked about that. Maybe I am missing something here.

FWIW, I would be happy to pay more tax (and willingly to forego things like the WFP) to make public transport free for all age groups and reduce the number of cars on the roads. I do, however, understand why the government won't do that. After the outcry when the WFP was means-tested, they will be very careful about making concessions that may later have to be reduced.

Most people in the HOL can apply for a bus pass grin.

What on earth does that have to do with whether the cap on the fares should be raised or not?

I'm waiting for Mick Jagger to be mentioned.

Allira Wed 30-Oct-24 10:57:07

It's relevant to both threads!

Mollygo Wed 30-Oct-24 10:42:43

Definitely the right thread. A group of people who can claim travel expenses, living expenses, and subsidised meals and evidently in some cases a clothing allowance won’t be thinking about what impact a £1 increase, (which is a 50% increase for DD on each bus fare) will have on those who can’t claim expenses.
Rather, they belong to the Ça plane pour moi group.

madalene Wed 30-Oct-24 09:41:43

No, right thread smile

madalene Wed 30-Oct-24 09:41:00

Ooops, wrong thread, apologies.

madalene Wed 30-Oct-24 09:37:31

No, it has nothing to do with the HoL, but I understand why the comparison is being made. Those affected by the £1 increase in bus fares will be the poorest in society (not pensioners as they can still get a bus pass) who are on minimum wage or who are unable to work and live on benefits. Those in the HoL on the other hand are not poor. They are paid a handsome amount to attend each day, get subsidised food and drink ( and we’re not talking Woolies café standard food) and all their travel costs covered, so I understand exactly why the one is being compared with the other.

'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet ' .
So wrote Shakespeare .
People misspell my name all the time .
It becomes Esme or Esmee sometimes with an accent and sometimes not .
Even people who've known me for thirty years and in regular texts .
And now at church , some have reverted to calling me by my mother's name !

I spell his name Keir .
It could easily be Kier . Does it matter , that much ?
One thing , Keir doesn't smell of roses .

Mollygo Wed 30-Oct-24 07:26:15

You’re right. Of course it has nothing to do with the HOL. They, like MPs, can claim travel expenses anyway so they won’t care anyway.

Doodledog Wed 30-Oct-24 00:54:10

It’s not a mean increase, it’s a maximum increase, which will vary across councils but be independent of one another. It has the square root of nothing to do with the HOL unless you think that an extra £1 on their bus fare to the House will deter them from attending?

MissAdventure Tue 29-Oct-24 18:01:16

I always bought a yearly ticket, rather than paying for each individual journey.

I don't know if that will be affected by the change, but I expect so.

TakeThat7 Tue 29-Oct-24 17:14:03

How many people are going to be affected by the mean increase in the bus fare Starmer and Angela are bringing in Years ago when I hadn't got a bus pass it was four pounds to go to town Then the conservatives had the great idea of the two. Pound fare helpful for working class going to work or even socialising But three pouñd now after the budget I read somewhere how much the lords get paid just to turn up for a day and sit in the house of lords I think it was a couple of hundred how about paying t hem the minimum wage and expecting more from them the money saved could go to the black hole

It's Keir with an e not an i
'Cause Keir with an i goes Kire not Keer
It's Kee not Kie
Now if my name were Bob
I'd be Bob - even backwards
And that is only half of it
It's Starmer, not Starker

But I don't care! I'm PM!
And a Sir.

I’m not willing to be berated by anyone, but I’ll risk sharing this with you.
My LP voting brother in law refers to his colostomy bag as Keir Stoma.
Evidently, despite his political choice, he thinks it’s very funny because all politicians are full of . . .

If OP is so outraged by Kier Starmer, what about Rachael Reeve’s and Angela Raynor both of which I have seen on GN. confused
