Tommy Robinson was trying to make a martyr of himself, claiming that he has the right to free speech, which is allegedly being denied him.

I don’t know or want to know much about Tommy Robinson , he sounds like a shocker, but a jail sentence? Seriously ? Why don’t they fine the backside off him and give him community service? Strange decision.
Because it was contempt of court. He made false allegations about a young Syrian refugee, who sued him for libel and was awarded £100,000. TR was ordered not to repeat the allegations, but he deliberately did repeat them. In other words, he took no notice of the court's injunction, which led to abuse directed at the boy and his family, who had to leave their home. It had already gone beyond the fine stage.

Thank you for that info.

He was arrested on Friday under the Anti-Terrorism act because of his history, and connections, and leadership role with groups that are classified in the UK as "Extreme Right Wing Terrorism". (other wise the arrest presumably would have been contempt of court)

There are two separate charges:

Tommy Robinson; I’m struggling to understand. I know absolutely that he is a far right, vile thug who has committed horrible criminal offences and is now in prison for his latest crime.
What I don’t underestimate is why he is called a terrorist?
Can someone explain please?
The terrorism charge is separate from the current reason for imprisonment.
My understanding is that he refused to let the police have access to his mobile phone when he left the country a few weeks ago and was charged under the Terrorism Act. I have no idea why the police wanted his phone.
Oh yes, I know he is horribly racist and a Holocaust denier too.

If people want to discuss something completely different from Robinson, why not set up a thread?

That MP who beat up the man should definitely not be an MP. He should forfeit his job immediately. I don’t care what provocation he received, he is a violent man.
He does have the right not to be judged by a vigilante group who have only seen CCTV images.

His name might be a fake, but his actions over the years as a far right terrorist are anything but. (as in wiki article).
He's close to Andrew Tate, the violent misogynist.
He’s a fake
Why isn’t he called out on it?

Does this excuse Tommy Robinson?
Technically Robinson was up for contempt of court, but the contempt was for repeating allegations against a schoolboy, Jamal Hijazi, after those allegations were proved to be lies.
Robinson had made racist claims on Facebook that Hijazi attacked girls at the school. Mr Hijazi was then violently assaulted at Almondbury Community School in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
He then repeated the claims again in a film he made. Thats why he got the minimum sentence for contempt, two years.
I'm glad this terrorist is behind bars at last.
I don't see what alternative there could have been in the TR case. He pleaded guilty, so the judge was hardly likely to dispute that or let him off because he was feeling kind.

The CCTV shows the victim standing with his hands in his pockets. He definitely did not assault the MP. Witnesses have said the MP just punched him and knocked him over and continued kicking him whilst he was on the ground. That’s all on CCTV too.
I agree with you that the CCTV does seem to show an unprovoked attack. If that's the case of course he should be charged. Nevertheless, it's wise to be a little cautious. I expect we all remember the video of the police officer kicking the man at Manchester Airport and the initial kneejerk reaction. It's turned out that there's much more to the story.

I’ve seen the cctv footage too, it’s the background that I don’t know.

That surprises me Galaxy, I had you down as somebody who doesn’t prejudge anybody until they know the full facts. The police are dealing with it, and no doubt the full story will come out in time.
If this MP is guilty of an unprovoked attack or a provoked attack without physical violence from the other party then he will lose the whip permanently and be dealt with by the courts, which is as it should be in my opinion. If the person he attacked was his alleged stalker then I’d want to know more. It’s not the man who was stalking him. The victim was a 42 year old man, named today.
I haven’t seen or heard that - as I said above, he should lose the whip and be dealt with through the courts if that’s the case and there is no mitigation - which as far as I’m aware we don’t know yet. . I’ve also said a number of times that I think that if people lose the whip permanently it should trigger a by election, they should not be allowed to remain as an independent MP until the next election.

I condemn him Casdon. I am secure enough in my own beliefs to do that.
Which isn’t enough to condemn somebody without any background unless you set yourself up as judge and jury…
I imagine primrose knows what most of us have seen.
