Sky News; good in my opinion.

He is a nasty piece of work whose only aim in life appears to be spreading misinformation in order to stir up hatred and encourage violence. He thought he could just go on breaking the law and get away with it. He deserves everything he gets.

I agree with free speech and do not wish to see it gradually eroded.

Free speech does not mean you are free to lie indiscriminately, and spread misinformation.

But someone else's idea of just 'who' is lying indiscriminately and spreading misinformation might differ from mine. I would say that Farage and Tice are lying and spreading misinformation, as is Stephen Yaxley Lennon and his supporters. But some might say it is anyone who has liberal or left wing tendencies.

So I'm free to say that Tice, Farage and Yaxley Lennon are bumboys with a penchant for minors, am I?

PS. AFAIK it's not true, in case anybody thinks I mean it. I'd just be saying it for a bit of fun.

That is exactly the point.

A court of law decided that he was lying about the Syrian boy and that he libelled him. He was ordered to stop spreading lies, but ignored the court. So who do you think should decide what information is true? Or should we all be allowed to go round saying exactly what we want? SYL has been goading for weeks and knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted to turn himself into some kind of martyr.

Well yes she can say it, and I can respondgrin.

If I responded to it, I am sure GN would quickly curtail my freedom of speech!

we could just carry on and hope it goes away (it wont)

What is the it?

growstuff Thu 31-Oct-24 17:44:10

If Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson had their way, anybody could go on social media and claim both are paedophiles and there would be no consequences.

Yes, we are in an interesting time aren’t we. Trump has added fuel to the fire. Elon Musk failed to present himself at court today so is another big mouth in contempt

It's classic bullying, nothing to do with free speech.

There are really really good reasons why people lack trust in those organisations though, lots of people have spent a lot of time saying 'the police are institutionally racist/sexist/ corrupt' ( I have at times been one of those people) but thry then complain when other people say they dont trust the police at times such as the riots. It's a complex picture. Of course lots of people in the riots were racist thugs, some were simply the feckless, or those who like a fight.
If lots of people dont trust institutions, we could ask why or we could just carry on and hope it goes away (it wont).

Galaxy Thu 31-Oct-24 17:14:17

Yes its the calling people stupid that is part of the failure, so you illustrated that well.

Iam64 Thu 31-Oct-24 17:12:40

Galaxy, I agree many factors contributed to the riots. Racial hatred and the demonisation of the boat people contributed along with Fear that our island would sink under the weight of the numbers of desperate people arriving.
We also have a growing number of people who don’t trust the establishment / politicians /the police.
None of these problems have gone away. I believe the govt was right to act hard and fast to arrest and prosecute the rioters it was able to identify. Sadly, there are people who see that as two their policing because most of the rioters were white.

growstuff Thu 31-Oct-24 17:10:44

Fortunately, most people do seem to have the sense to see through him.

Well, if you're falling for the silly game, don't be surprised if people call you out for it.

This thread is about Tommy Robinson's libel, which caused actual harm, and his pleading guilty to contempt of court. It has nothing to do with riots or freedom of speech, however much he would like people to link them.

Well I suppose I would widen it to beyond TR (who isnt as important as he thinks he is), I personally think reform will do really well in the next local elections for example.
If this keeps happening, Brexit, Trump (possibly twice), then the 'left' or however you want to describe the opposition would benefit from looking at what they are doing.
The climate for the riots and for support for TR didnt just originate from dodgy posts on social media.

growstuff Thu 31-Oct-24 17:00:26

If you want to discuss freedom of speech, try starting a support thread for Afghan women, not trying to link it to some racist twerp.

growstuff Thu 31-Oct-24 16:56:43

There are threads about far right riots. They have nothing to do with jailing for contempt of court. I'm sure you know that Tommy Robinson was sued for libel, told to pay £100,000, which he didn't pay because he declared himself bankrupt (despite living a millionaire lifestyle). The person he libelled has suffered actual abuse as a result of the accusations. All of this freedom of speech stuff is to distract from that.

No it's about a thread moving on, that has covered riots, the far right, protests, etc.
Also sad to say there wouldnt be a game to play if those opposing TR hadnt failed.

In what way have those opposing Tommy Robinson failed?
