The result will be announced at 11am tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

The "turnout" was not high. (Telegraph).

Kemi Badenoch was the favourite last week

"A survey of Tory members by the ConservativeHome website last week suggested, external Badenoch led Jenrick by 55% to 31%, with a further 14% undecided."

As regards discussion had to find an accessible website

Will there be a surprise?

I'm not sure which candidate will be the best as the leader of the opposition. I am not very keen on either of them but will see how they fare before passing judgement.

LizzieDrip Fri 01-Nov-24 18:30:19

I’m interested to know which candidate Tory supporters are most keen on?

As a Labour voter, I really don’t know which of the two I would like to see as leader of the opposition🤷‍♀️

It’s said by some that Badenoch will give Starmer a run for his money at the despatch box.

I’ve heard this too.
Is it correct? I suspect it might be, but we’ll have to wait to see.

Badenoch will win it, don't like her and don't like Jenrick, I think for Tory centrists either one will be bad news for the party, I mean the party lost because the far right hardliners were losing public support. Still I suppose if the party has become a one trick pony.....

Galaxy Fri 01-Nov-24 19:37:21

I think if they have sense it will be Badenoch although she is a risk. She could start a fight in an empty room but she has some sort of vision I think.

I don’t like her vision at all…

I think it will be interesting to see whether what the Telegraoh said about the turnout is true, and if it is significantly different to previous ballots. I still get the sense that the choice for members should have been between one of these two and Cleverly, and wonder if the successful candidate tomorrow will stay the course.

Galaxy Fri 01-Nov-24 20:00:35

Well yes maybee, but you wont vote Tory anyway. You arent really her target.

Galaxy Fri 01-Nov-24 20:02:10

Oh that's a distinct possibility Casdon, if history is anything to go by, they may go through a few before they get to someone who will win am election.

Babs03 Fri 01-Nov-24 20:18:27

On the politics show yesterday was pointed out that Jenrick had reinvented himself several times to become the odious little man he is but Badenoch is what she is and has not changed an iota in what she believes, which means absolutely nothing to me but might mean something to those who support the party.

It doesn't seem to mean much to her constituents. Her majority fell from 27,594 to 2,610.

I'm not the slightest bit concerned that Badenoch could ever win a general election.

mum2three Sat 02-Nov-24 05:30:56

If Badenoch wins, I hope she won't turn out to be like so many politicians......saying one thing to get elected, then reneging on promises.

ronib Sat 02-Nov-24 05:47:45

Badenoch seems very good at the word salad game and so should give Starmer a grilling at PMQs. Badenoch doesn’t always make sense but that’s how politics is these days.
By word salad I mean the ‘no increase in taxes for the working people’ whilst effectively reducing jobs by increasing employment costs on employers etc. I think there are signs that support for Reform is growing.

growstuff Sat 02-Nov-24 06:07:10

She usually contradicts herself the next time she speaks. I've seen what a hash she makes of things at local hustings when she hasn't been briefed.

I think Starmer will make mincemeat of her. She'll claim she was misinterpreted and get on her high horse and start lashing out. It should be fun! grin

growstuff Sat 02-Nov-24 06:09:17

Reform and Badenoch don't have a positive idea which would benefit the majority of the people in the country between them.

ronib Sat 02-Nov-24 06:12:17

growstuff Badenoch if elected might not stay around for the next election but Reform is gaining ground. The 80 percent who didn’t vote Labour will have another chance at the ballot box.

I haven't disputed that.

This thread about the next Conservative leader.

That seems to be No.1 priority on all of their lists. Say one thing and do another. They are all just as bad as each other, no matter which party they affiliate with. None of them know how to live in the real world.

Galaxy Sat 02-Nov-24 08:28:38

I wonder what Johnsons performance was like at his constituency, my guess is absent or shambolic, but he was still successful at winning votes. I think it is absolutely possible that she will get cross and lash out. She also sometimes slips into identity politics which never helps anyone.

I don’t like the way Jenrick has reinvented himself along the way. I don’t see him as authentic. He was foolish and irresponsible in his comments about the Southport murder investigation and should have known better.

I heard Badenoch on Women’s Hour and on the Sunday evening political interview with Nick Robinson. Obviously, her politics aren’t mine but she was articulate, warm, entertaining and intelligent. She may be the stronger candidate but what a mess the Conservatives have got themselves into.

Have you ever seen/heard her when she's not comfortable with the people interviewing her? She gets asked a question she doesn't like and her face turns to thunder and she becomes aggressive. She's fine when she's allowed to be in charge, but hates it if she's challenged. She has actually reinvented herself from when she first stood as a parliamentary candidate in 2010. At the time she tried to persuade voters that she was a Nigerian in politics, who would fight their corner. When that failed, she reinvented herself with the help of some mentors. Her authenticity is arrogance that she believes she's superior to others.

growstuff Sat 02-Nov-24 09:06:33

I'm not surprised James Cleverly has ruled out serving in a shadow cabinet with either of him.
