Casdon let’s leave feelings out of this. Exactly what effect does an opposition ever have on governments with huge majorities? Some concrete examples are failing to spring up regardless of party. Is an opposition merely a government in waiting?

So not exactly inexperienced.

No less than Kemi Badenoch I would think.
Although, of course, Kemi has her working class credentials as she worked in McDonald's when doing her 'A' levels. Not sure how that works but no-one seems to have questioned it.

My Grandson is working at Macdonalds whilst doing his A levels. Don't knock it
a) at least they're working.
b) if you can work with the public in MacDonalds, you gain real work life skill.
b) have you ever worked in hospitality, it's bloody hard.

My point is this:
A child from a wealthy background does not suddenly become working class because they work at McDonald' for some extra cash when in the Sixth form.

One thing that Starmer has done in opposition, which I applaud him for ( especially given the problems the country has faced over the past few years) is to support the government if it’s in the best interest of the country to do so, not to oppose for the sake of opposing. Which imo is a very sensible attitude.

Your feelings about Labour are clouding your judgement if you think it isn’t important for the opposition to provide challenge ronib. I’m sorry if that offends you, but it’s the truth.

Casdon it is a very serious question and I am scratching my head wondering exactly what impact Labour had during the last 14 years on a day to day basis.
I am afraid that a dictatorship is exactly what we have dressed up as democracy.

Anybody interested in politics must appreciate the cut and thrust of challenge from the opposition, otherwise it’s a dictatorship. That wasn’t a serious question from you though, surely, you must understand the importance of a strong opposition?

I disagree ronib, I think it’s very important to have a strong opposition, whichever party is in power. They are the main challenge to the government of the day between elections.

Casdon serving as a shadow minister seems to be a very non job. Jenrick and all will have zero impact. A long time before the next election too so anything might happen between now and then.

Shadow justice - does that mean he will want to ensure photographs and art are removed from prison walls so hmp doesn’t become too attractive - like he did with Disney cartoons meant to reassure refugee children

Allira - I agree with you. The daughter of a doctor and a professor of physiology doesn’t become working class by being employed at MacDonalds whilst doing A levels. Most so called middle class children work part time during A levels and throughout university.
I’m surprised (not) that she hasn’t been called out on that nonsense

I'm not disagreeing with you about working in MacDonalds. The issue here is that, in an interview, Badenoch said that she was born into a middle-class family but working in MacDonalds made her working class. She has been widely mocked on SM for the claim.

It won’t matter how little experience she has. She has been an MP since 2017.

Wasn’t Starmer an MP just from 2015?

So that’s 9 years.

She could be Leader of the Opposition for the next 5 years.

Didn’t Starmer have that role just from 2020?

So that would be 12 years.

She promised Jenrick a place in the Shadow Cabinet when she became leader, but not sure how that would play out. She might chose people with less experience she can shape around her views.

I thought he'd said he wouldn't serve in the Shadow Cabinet under Badenoch?
