Could Kamala Harris Sue Trump For Slander?

An overwhelming percentage of his speeches have been very personal towards his opponent and immensely offensive - surely there's a case for litigation? Or is he protected by the fact that he's an election candidate?

Unlike Trump who has no military record

But is now regarded by some as the bravest man on the planet after the assassination attempt.

Just googled it, it was John McCain, he was a prisoner of the Vietnamese for 5 years. Trump said he was a loser for being captured but apparently has has repeatedly called injured members of the military losers.

Indeed. Cross posted.

I believe he was a navy sergeant, shot down flying fighter planes.

Yes I would be fine with someone saying that about me what you are advocating terrifies me much more than any nonsense that Trump could say.

Whilst I understand the context, if it had been said by anyone else, not a potential POTUS, in a country where guns were not as easily obtained as chewing gum, I would not be concerned, however I do have concerns around some of Trumps comments and understand others concerns given what happened after the last election.

Some of his followers take everything Trump said as verbatim.

Well someone needs to sue the man who called Pueto Rico a rubbish tip in the ocean or put some ever lasting tape over his horrible mean mouth

Yes!

The comedian who made the comments about Puerto Rico is Tony Hinchcliffe.

(does give Trumps words on Cheney in detail)

"“She’s a radical war hawk,” Trump said of Cheney, following a tangent about his pardon in 2018 of Lewis “Scooter” Libby, a former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, her father. “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, okay? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.”

"Trump followed up with a social media post on Friday saying his point was that Cheney herself would not fight. He also doubled down on insulting her intelligence, calling her a “War Hawk, and a dumb one at that.”
“If you ever put her into the field of battle, she’d be the first one to chicken out,” Trump told reporters at a campaign stop at a coffee shop in Michigan on Friday. “She wouldn’t fight, she’d chicken out so fast, and that’s all I say."

Of course he was first in line to join the military. Was it flat feet that prevented him being heroic?

And didn’t he describe any soldier that returned from a war injured as a ‘loser’?

Oh yes I remember that. Another politician died, I think he was a politician, he'd been in the Vietnam War and people were remembering heroic things he'd done and Trump got a bit jealous I think so had to put him down. Can't remember the man's name.

John McCain. He survived 6 years imprisonment in Vietnam.

Apparently it wasn't flat feet it was bone spurs.

That was supposed to be quiet land, but I would take him quitting too.

imaround Tue 05-Nov-24 21:30:53

This comment is hardly the worst he has said, unfortunately. NOTHING ever happens to him. In the US, anyone can sue for anything. In this case, his defense would be free speech. So basically, it isn't worth it to sue him. He has stacked most of the courts in his favor anyhow.

The ONLY thing we can do to get rid of him is vote today. Problem is, there is an entire movement he is the figure head of and even if he sails off to quit land (as if he would), the movement will continue.

The Heritage Foundation has been working on this since Regan. If they lose today, they are already talking about Project 2029.

Babs03 Tue 05-Nov-24 21:19:12

Well she can try to sue Trump but seeing as he is no stranger to the courts or to getting away with whatever he is accused of I wouldn’t rate her chances.

Lets hope the crowds who stormed the Capitol calling for the blood of Pence and Nancy Pelosi feel the same about his nonsense. I'm not convinced and can't see why he couldn't just say "How would she feel if she was the one being shot at?" Which would work with the mentally challenged supporters and everyone else.

Just to put it in context . No I am not endorsing Trump whatsoever, and could think of better ways of helping these people than to criticise, but the problems are there, whatever you may think.

Hurling insults at each other seems to be the norm in American politics. Sadly, it's happening in British politics too. What exactly is the point?

As in when, M61?

She always bad mouthing him

Yes, she engages in critiquing in the strongest words.

But she never advocates violence, which is a continual, everyday part of Trump's normal speeches.

Good article in the Washington Post:
www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/11/01/liz-cheney-trump-guns-shooting/

First part is on Cheney then discusses Trumps violent rhetoric.

We cant possibly have any conversations about war and its futility can we?, 'it is the officer class who sit in safety, I wonder what would happens if it was their sons being shot at?'
Do you think the above means people are wishing the sons of officers should be shot. Of course context is important, unless you want all ideas and thinking to be so banal no one is able to explore issues.

No that isn't the same as what Trump said. He could have said I wonder what she'd think if she was the one being shot at. He didn't.
