Fleurpepper numbers of incomers/migrants need to have an element of control by any host country, imo.

Fleurpepper yes we’re in the same boat here. Certainly we want a fairer society but please why does it need to be open? Open in what way? Closed might be better?
Interesting reply- but I do not understand what you mean exactly. I mean open to those who are different from us, in so many ways, open to positive immigration, which we need to replace an ageing population, and in so many other ways. What do you mean by 'closed might be better'?
As for friends, I shall repost here the stats about who voted for whom (as they look very similar to who voted for what in 2016)

I voted for Trump and the Republicans. What a wonderful victory!! I am not a fan of his, but we had no other choice. The last 4 years have been dreadful under Biden and Harris.
Thank you.
That is exactly what I am hearing from friends and extended family members in the USA.
People vote to better off financially. not for higher food prices, fuel costs and job insecurity.
It was the case of the better of two evils.
All our friends and extended family in the USA are distraught, shocked, in tears and even truly scared. And they are all well off but want a fairer and more open country.
There is a saying…….” go woke go broke”
It’s so true.
Trump had declared today that the USA has only two genders male and female.
His speech on this matter was excellent.

MissInterpreted, Trump is not the only politician to have said vile things. Wes Streeting, for instance, tweeted that he would like to push Jan Moir under a train. (This was a while back, in 2009). Mostly we are governed by psychopaths because they are the only ones ruthless and nasty enough to push their way to the top. If we hurl our own insults we do not help the picture.
Saying vile things is one thing - being a convicted felon is something else altogether. And yes, I am disgusted that anyone could vote for him - and I refuse to apologise for that. His policies terrify me. And I especially despair for the women and minorities of America.

Oh well, it makes a change to have have a go at someone else instead of bashing our own politicians.
For goodness sake, why do we not ask WHY he has been elected? All the self-righteous, patronising remarks serve to emphasise that a certain section - over half, seemingly, of Americans - do not feel they have a voice and they are treated like dirt, called fascist, racist etc. by the woke brigade even told they are 'disgusting' (MissInterpreted, that last epithet is yours!). So Trump says he will be their 'voice' and they want to believe him - same as most of us want to believe our favourite party. Until everyone gets listened to with respect, until we can have tolerance, openness and equality for all, including those who do not agree with us, we will continue to have these stupid political situations, and these highly questionable people governing us.
So true Galaxy
Its the economy.
And that what the Democrats and to some extent the media thought were important issues, just weren't that important to people.
If Trump is the better of two evils then the world is well and truly f*****!

Has everyone forgotten the time he openly mocked a disabled reporter? How anyone could vote him after that was beyond me, never mind anything else.
And we're entitled to comment on the result, considering that it will have repercussions for the whole world, not just the USA.I remember. Just as I remember his he incited his supporters to descend on Capitol Hill after the last election when 6 people were killed. I also remember how many times he was indicted for various crimes but managed to swerve jail time. And that is without the many racist and sexist remarks he has made, including the time he said immigrants were eating people’s pets!!
And of course he made Islamophobic remarks about Sadiq Khan.
But Starmer and Lanmy need to apologise??
Hah!! There is the irony!!
And he implied that a lady reporter who questioned him was on her period. And that soldiers injured in battle were losers; he himself being a draft dodger. And yet women and ex soldiers vote for him.

...But Starmer and Lanmy need to apologise??
Boris Johnson once made a damning observation about Trump - quite rude in fact - which ended (I can't remember the exact phrase) with the conclusion that Trump was not fit to be President.
I wonder if the same people who expect Starmer and Lammy to apologise also asked the same of Johnson?
Nope.
If you pretend men are women a large slice of the electorate laugh at you.
Another part of the electorate think that gender ideology is deeply sexist and homophobic.
Another part think if you lie about that, how can you be trusted on housing, education, etc.
Many European countries including ours have much stricter rules on transition for children than America.

Agree with all thats said about Trump. But leave the voters alone.
Why? They're the ones voting him into power.

So much hand wringing and angst when it will all be forgotten by the weekend 🤷♀️
I very much doubt it.
I feel anti-Brexit like vibes from some.
Well course, as it is entirely relevant here. The elephant in the room has just got much much bigger!
The lady in the video has lived and worked, paid taxes, for almost a life-time. Elon Musk lived for many many years as an illegal immigrant, born in South AFrica, emigrated to Canada, and came on a temporary basis to the USA on student visa, and stayed. No-one knows how he managed to become a USA citizen- probably large sums of money 'under the table'.

Does Trump have brownshirt stormtroopers and lock up and torture people and confiscate their homes and property? I thought that was more Putin, or Xi or Kim il Jong line
well, his plans for so called illegal immigrants, and their families, be it granma, or the children born on USA soil and therefore USA citizens- come close. But not for Musk, or for Melania and family!
The cost (never mind the pain) will be huge, in achieving this, and the result of so many sectors of the economy, agriculture, hospitality and cleaning, hospitals and care, and so much more.

I think the voters are like many other voters sick and tired of empty promises/lies, and they see someone like Trump as anti-establishment, and against liberal left wing politics that they feel threatens their values.
Of course they are just being conned again, because Trump is ‘the establishment’ indeed he managed to swerve jail because of the power and influence he has, so hardly a ‘man of the people’ who would have been sentenced to jail by the establishment.
And the liberal left has no real sway in the US, indeed even the Democrats are ‘centre right’ in their politics, fact is most Americans live a far more traditional and conservative life than Europeans, so all the hoohah about WOKE and trans rights is just that - hoohah, or to coin another phrase ‘scaremongering’.
As for standing up for working people, Trump cannot reverse the fortunes of the rust belt, cannot produce jobs out of thin air, and cannot improve the lives of those festering in small towns with no opportunities unless he becomes radically left wing and redistributes wealth in the US. Which will never happen.
So he blames immigrants. A no brainer. Go for a soft target, a bunch of powerless people rather than blaming the powerful.
Is a template for politicians who have nothing concrete to offer in the way of workable policies.

Well I’m delighted. 🤩
Congratulations Mr. Trump. You’ve shocked the naysayers.
There will be howls now (think Brexit here). Some people only like democracy when their side wins.
... if only it were as simple as howling because one side's team lost against the other's.
Globalisation means our economies are all inter-connected, but you already know that.
As for democracy; money talks to money, wealth is power, which can override the niceties of democracy when it suits.
Agree with all thats said about Trump. But leave the voters alone.
Because they believe all Politicians are the same! So you vote for the one who promises what you want. All Trump voters cared about was improving their own personal lot in life. Very easy to understand.
