I think so.

He's just as guilty as Paula Vennells in my opinion..
To think how many times he's lectured us on issues, yet all the while covering up for a prolific pedophile, (Smyth) a sexual predator.
A supposed man of the cloth?? , his kind disgust me .

He shouldn't have been allowed to resign, he should have been sacked and thrown out of the church

ronib Tue 12-Nov-24 16:13:49

Starmer left in November 2013. The report was released in February 2013.

Wasn’t Starmer involved or not involved as head of the CPS with Jimmy Saville? Interesting pattern developing here.

I think any pattern is only in your head ronib. Starmer left the DPP role in 2013, so how could he have been involved in any way?

My friend, around 15 years ago was a real conspiracy theorist, and she told me then about paedophilia in the higher echelons, including the church, certain royals, politicians.

I can remember thinking she was off her rocker at the time,

Off-topic Miss A, but similarly, years ago a friends BiL worked in television and was very anti Jimmy Savile.
When she told me why he was, I just didn't believe her and wouldn't listen to the "unfounded allegations".
How wrong was I.

Sacked in my opinion. Is there such a thing as dereliction of duty in the Church.

JamesandJon33 Tue 12-Nov-24 16:00:55

Feet of clay …..he should go.

ronib Tue 12-Nov-24 15:51:01

Justin Welby is castigated for reading the report in February 2013 and he thought, in error, that the police would take up the case. Starmer needs to make quite clear what his involvement or non involvement was in February 2013 when he was in charge of the CPS. Was it his idea to sit on the report? If not, whose responsibility was it?

Retroladywriting Tue 12-Nov-24 15:43:51

Interesting that he said "step aside", rather than "stepped down", isn't it?

I can't get my head round what the parents were doing. The BBC says these boys were beaten till they bled. So your son gets home from a camp in pain probably not able to carry his backpack to school wincing if anyone touches him. T shirts in his laundry bloodstained and no parent went to the police? How does that happen. Does no teacher notice? Does no child complain? I don't understand it.

Maybe that was when it was reported to the Police?

Aveline Tue 12-Nov-24 15:24:24

Shocking that he had to be pushed rather than see for himself that his position was untenable.

Can anyone remember the documentary Neil Morrissey did on the abuse in children's homes?

It is just awful, all of it

Timeline:

The case was referred to the police in 2013 by the C of E but not taken up by Hampshire police who took it up 2017, after the Channel 4 investigation.

They worked with the CPS who cleared the case for prosecution/extradition in 2018, Smythe dies.

Mollygo so exactly why was Starmer not told about this case? You assume that Starmer wasn’t involved but you have blind belief stepping in here. It’s totally incredible that the head of the CPS had been kept in the dark about this.

He was not DPP in 2017.

gagsy Tue 12-Nov-24 15:17:54

Quite apart from this present scandal he has been killing the Church of England and meddling in things that are none of his business instead of proclaiming the gospel and invigorating the Church to be a vital part of the life of the country.

JaneJudge Tue 12-Nov-24 15:15:39

I know, do you think it might be easier to do a people in places of power who weren’t involved in the abuse of children, women <insert other> It would be a much shorter list 🤬

MissAdventure Tue 12-Nov-24 15:09:30

The whole situation us incredible, apart from the fact that these kind of things are coming to the fore with increasing sickening regularity,

He has!

I’ve just got in from work and was pleased to see that he’d resigned.Been better all round if he’d done it yesterday instead of making an announcement that he wasn’t going to.

Anniebach Tue 12-Nov-24 15:09:05

Wonder. if the confessional was involved

Allira Tue 12-Nov-24 15:08:11

There was a Channel 4 programme about the abuse and the cover-up in 2017.
www.channel4.com/news/archbishop-apologises-for-historic-abuse-the-full-story

Hampshire Police have now launched an investigation while the Archbishop has apologised, admitting the church had failed the victims.

If children were abused, and he said nothing, surely his actions were criminal?

The act of omission?
That would be difficult to prove.

Where's Germanshepherdsmum when you need her?

Yes, culpable by turning a blind eye?

GSM would have the answer. And explain it as it is.

It is interesting to note that Starmer was in charge of the Crown Prosecution Service at the time of the report so what exactly was his role in this?

None. If he wasn’t told, he would know nothing about it.
