I think so.

He's just as guilty as Paula Vennells in my opinion..
To think how many times he's lectured us on issues, yet all the while covering up for a prolific pedophile, (Smyth) a sexual predator.
A supposed man of the cloth?? , his kind disgust me .

From the BBC website:

“A Church of England bishop has called on the Archbishop of Canterbury to resign, calling his position "untenable" after a damning report into a prolific child abuser associated with the Church.
Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley is the most senior member of the Church to call on the Most Reverend Justin Welby to stand down, following the "horrific, horrendous and shocking" report.
Mr Welby is facing mounting pressure to resign after it emerged last week that he did not follow up rigorously enough on reports of John Smyth QC's "abhorrent" abuse of more than 100 boys and young men.”

Yes I think from what I’ve heard so far that he should resign.

Primrose53 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:06:09

Yes he should.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:08:24

Actually, Does Welby have to resign? What is preventing the C. of E. hierarchy getting rid of him? Never mind ‘resign’.

He should be sacked.

Doubtless he’s busy ‘reflecting’. Gah.

I think he’s on very dodgy ground.
The honourable thing would be to resign - but lose all that power? I suspect he’ll wait until he’s pushed…

Babs03 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:10:09

He has to resign, this is too shocking not to, and all those poor boys and young men should know that nobody is above the law when it comes to something like this. Is the very least that can be done to make this terrible wrong right.

Ilovecheese Mon 11-Nov-24 19:13:33

Yes, I think he should.

MissAdventure Mon 11-Nov-24 19:16:16

He should be thrown out, not given the option of choosing to resign.

Bishops, and presumably arch bishops, are appointed by the prime minister after taking advice from a committee whose name escapes me. Not sure anyone could sack an arch bishop.

M0nica Mon 11-Nov-24 19:19:10

Yes

GrannyGravy13 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:19:18

He should do the honourable thing, resign now.

If he doesn’t resign then Keir Starmer needs to sack him.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:25:36

I’m sure I read a while back that he put Paula Vennell’s name forward to be Bishop of London.

Another ‘Christian’ reprobate.

Astitchintime Mon 11-Nov-24 19:29:21

No, he should be SACKED! By not reporting the abuse he is condoning it and in my view that makes him guilty by association

NonGrannyMoll Mon 11-Nov-24 19:30:19

On the face of it, yes, he should resign if he's done something wrong (rather than making a mistake or treading a fine line but falling off). So few people fall on their own swords these days, it's almost as if the golden rule is Survive At All Costs. What I can't understand is when one person commits any kind of crime (moral, ethical or legal) and people immediately start baying for another person's head. If the abuser was known to the Church then he was probably also known to the police (ever heard of the famous "secret" boys' club?). Yet I don't hear anyone baying for the Police Chief's head (or the abuser's friends, family, acquaintances, Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all). A strange kind of society we have now, is all I'm saying.

TerriBull Mon 11-Nov-24 19:32:05

I think so! It's a well trodden path, abuse within religious institutions, and if he knew about what was taking place and didn't do anything well then his position is untenable I've always found him rather wet anyway.

Yes, totally agree with this.

Hear, ruddy hear MissAdventure!
What a pathetic toad of a man he blooming well is!
Whatever happened to integrity & honour. He should have made certain that the safety of the children was absolutely assured.
My heartbreaks for inoccent children caught-up in awful, preventable circumstances such as this debacle. 😒

petra Mon 11-Nov-24 19:39:20

I would imagine hundreds of journalists are digging wherever they can to show that he did know before 2013.
To think I was so proud of my granddaughter when she was invited to Lambeth Palace a few weeks back. The photo with him has been binned 😡

JaneJudge Mon 11-Nov-24 19:40:08

What would Jesus do? Not what Justin has done for sure <sigh>

Iam64 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:42:55

Yes he must resign

AGAA4 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:44:31

He needs to be sacked or step down. He is not fit for that position.

foxie48 Mon 11-Nov-24 19:47:18

Of course he should resign, his excuse is as weak as he is. It just makes me wonder what else has been "covered up" and how many other children have been abused as a result. I don't know how some are able to sleep at night, surely any decent person would have wanted to know what was going on with Smythe not just ignored it on the basis of "I didn't think it was that serious". He's supposed to be the spiritual leader of the Church of England, words fail me!

The Monarch appoints the Archbishops, Bishops and Deans, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister who is advised by the Crown Appointments Commission

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 11-Nov-24 19:50:08

He must go. The whole story is unbelievable.
