Should Justin Welby resign?

I don’t think that someone, however reprehensible, who died over 500 years ago can be held responsible for abuses of power in the Church today. King Charles can, I think, step in as head of the C of E, and IMO he should do so. Maybe a meeting with the King is why Welby has cleared his diary?

I think most Catholics know full well about the historic abuses within the church, both centuries ago and those committed against children more recently. We also know full well how the powers within tried to cover them up.

It's hard to fathom a spiritual leader such as Justin Welby who is known for his hand wringing over historical slavery, something he can't change but didn't act to do anything about an awful abuse in the here and now. There are those in public life whose actions, or lack of them contradict all they are supposed to stand for.

The Catholic Church is far from innocent in covering up abuse, in fact all institutions, that have contact with vulnerable people have been implicated with abuse and try to cover it up to save face.
The Al Fayed scandal is another, the Met and Harrods both knew what was happening and didn’t stop it.

No surprise there was a cover up, are there any leaders in the
C of E that are entirely fault free?, a local vicar was jailed recently for child porn offences too.

Ftm420. It is good that the Church allows Muslims to use church buildings if they wish to. Inter faith dialogue is essential as we learn from each other and live in a multi faith society. I thank God that JW respects other religions.

He should have been sacked. Are these the Church values? They should set an example but obviously think it's ok. They are not my values how can I respect theirs.
Paddyann, your comments are uncalled for. What about Queen Mary and her treatment of who she thought heretics, just ordinary God fearing people. If you believe in the teaching of Jesus, it's not about Churches and fancy robes and intolerance.

Not my church, never been an Anglican or a Catholic come to that. In the bad old days they confiscated my ancestor’s land because they refused to be part of it. Lovely people then and now by the looks of it. I would have thought an archbishop should be someone to respect and look up to, setting an example but what would I know about this particular church ?

After watching Newsnight just now I think it’s def the right thing for Welby to resign, but he says he won’t do.Those poor boys and what they suffered.

King Charles, as the Head of the Anglican Church, is the only one who can sack him?

That's what I thought. I don't think the PM has a role in the C of E, but the King is the Head of it.

He should resign, but if he doesn't then the King should step in and sack him.

I really don’t see how recognising and getting together with differing faiths has anything to do with the Archbishop covering for a sex offender.

He should be kicked out not asked to resign he is a disgrace.

The Archbishop has not spoken for the Anglican Church for a very long time. From blessing Diwali and Eid, to allowing moslems to hold services in our holy places, he is presiding over the end times for our national church.

I didn’t think that the job description for Archbishop includes prosecuting serial abusers. I thought the police had that role in our society? Why were they not actively involved in investigating this case? Procedures need to be changed to make sure that the police are involved from the beginning in any future cases.

It's worrying how big institutions put protecting their own image above doing the right thing. The Post Office wanted to preserve its reputation, not recognising that in the eyes of the public its reputation was in the hands of the people in the local post offices, not the brand. The C of E, similarly, doesn't seem to realise that its reputation lies with the priests in the parishes, not the institution itself.

Yes, Welby should fall on his crozier.

The General Synod of the Church of England should be called out on this one to meet and reach a decision, which can only go one way, Welby should step down: currently it needs more senior church people to speak up on this.
