Should Justin Welby resign?

Of course he should resign, his excuse is as weak as he is. It just makes me wonder what else has been "covered up" and how many other children have been abused as a result. I don't know how some are able to sleep at night, surely any decent person would have wanted to know what was going on with Smythe not just ignored it on the basis of "I didn't think it was that serious". He's supposed to be the spiritual leader of the Church of England, words fail me!

He needs to be sacked or step down. He is not fit for that position.

I think so! It's a well trodden path, abuse within religious institutions, and if he knew about what was taking place and didn't do anything well then his position is untenable I've always found him rather wet anyway.

On the face of it, yes, he should resign if he's done something wrong (rather than making a mistake or treading a fine line but falling off). So few people fall on their own swords these days, it's almost as if the golden rule is Survive At All Costs. What I can't understand is when one person commits any kind of crime (moral, ethical or legal) and people immediately start baying for another person's head. If the abuser was known to the Church then he was probably also known to the police (ever heard of the famous "secret" boys' club?). Yet I don't hear anyone baying for the Police Chief's head (or the abuser's friends, family, acquaintances, Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all). A strange kind of society we have now, is all I'm saying.

Bishops, and presumably arch bishops, are appointed by the prime minister after taking advice from a committee whose name escapes me. Not sure anyone could sack an arch bishop.

He has to resign, this is too shocking not to, and all those poor boys and young men should know that nobody is above the law when it comes to something like this. Is the very least that can be done to make this terrible wrong right.
