Oh Mr Starmer … could things be any worse only 4 months in?

Domestically you’re nowhere to be seen. (I know, COP and saving the world jamboree). Your personal ratings have plummeted at -22. Your Chancellor is trying to defend the ‘change’ that Labour told us we needed - VAT on school fees, IHT changes, Net Zero, WFA stopped, inflation up from 1.7 to 2.4% - in your absence. To be honest I feel a bit sorry for RR. Firefighting for all she’s worth while her boss is halfway around the world. Now Starmer is telling us that he used to work on a farm….

Things just seem to be going from bad to worse for him. Buyer’s remorse anyone? Or is it jot early to tell 4 months in and he just needs more time?

There's no point in a lot of the thread, with all the "if this happens" or "if that happens" really, is there?
As fgt says, we just have to brace ourselves.

She's right 👏👏👏👏👏

There's no point in a lot of threads!

Some will be bracing more than others.

Someone sooner or later will have to resign, it is on the cards. Starmer and Reeves and any other cronies will realise that whatever they do now, will be scrutinised 100% and before long even their own cabinet will get fed up of all the hatred from the country because at the moment, they are hated very much.

The only problem is who will replace Starmer, Reeves and whoever because we have a Labour cabinet in for the next 4.1/2 years so someone will have to come up with a replacement for them.

MayBee70 Thu 21-Nov-24 21:45:48

So, who do you think will replace them? I think the past few years have made you forget that political parties don’t actually change their leader every five minutes.

Casdon Thu 21-Nov-24 21:47:45

I don’t see that happening any time soon unless there is an actual, real, scandal about a minister as opposed to a manufactured one TopGunner. They are riding away from the noise, getting on with making changes. It will be fair to judge after a year whether what they are doing has had significant impact in reality, for good or bad. In the meantime, nobody will be going anywhere, it’s just wishful thinking.

Well - my family all voted Labour. (except on son in law who went Lib Dem). I do have a few friends who voted conservative but the majority are Labour voters. None of us share the doom n gloom expressed by right leaning posters on gransnet.
I accept I live in a generally conservative thinking country with a media that leans right.
I don’t accept the government is hated by everyone. I listen to radio phone ins which reflect more balanced , measured views than seen by many anti Labour comments here. Our CLP has its share of folk who’d prefer Corbyn or one of his gang in number 10 but the majority recognise Corbynites will never win an election.
This government was left a disaster to sort out. Starmer was criticised for saying it’s a nightmare, worse than we expected even. He was being honest

Yes, agree. Starmer always said is was going to be tough. Just how much had gone wrong is still coming out.

foxie48 Fri 22-Nov-24 08:10:45

Any sensible government gets the tough stuff out early in it's term. Labour have a good majority hence they can weather some disagreement within their own party. Tbh not everyone is as unhappy with the measures taken so far. I'm certainly not as angry as I was with some conservative policies and statements and behavior by some conservative MPs. People have short memories if they've forgotten the chaos of the last Tory govt, that'll help labour in four years time.

Dressagediva123 Fri 22-Nov-24 08:32:10

He’s got rid of heridary lords - 600 asylum seekers have been returned. Looks like the railways are in track to be re-nationalised. I think the winter fuel debacle was a mistake- but agree it should be targeted more. The right wing media are stoking the flames as the powers behind the press are very rich people and have more influence when the tories are in power …

escaped Fri 22-Nov-24 08:33:26

Well yes, farmers will accept it, just like I've accepted paying Labour's flagship policy, namely the 20% vat on school fees. I dont like it, but what choice is there other than to make a lot of noise about it?!
My beef is - if you get the farming analogy here 🐮 🐮 - the lack of discussion all round, the cruel timing of the implementation, and the assumption that the smallish amounts raised will solve all the problems.
I'll believe it when I see it.
The fact that Starmer comes out with daft things about himself, to show he "undersrands" during his interviews just irritates me, but given time, I'll probably just give a wry smile, and think, "Farmer" Starmer at it again".

Just for the record, I did not report you, though I did call you out for calling a poster a "muck stirrer". If it was meant as a farming analogy, then it best to kind of make that clear.

Iam64 Fri 22-Nov-24 08:42:40

I missed your comment Susieq62. If a comment as innocuous as the one quoted by escaped was deleted, that sounds as daft as the police investigating someone for calling another a Rottweiler (daily mail this morning)

Wyllow3 Fri 22-Nov-24 08:48:50

In terms of the need for money to spend on vital services, I can't see any straightforward big alternative to the smaller-but-accumulative'overall taxes. No one likes them but alternatives aren't being suggested - what would another government have done that was better?

The situation simply couldn't go on as it was, look at NHS, Care, Prisons, defence, schools...no one can doubt they were all run down, but raising income tax substantially was seen as completely unacceptable.

Iam64 Fri 22-Nov-24 08:54:02

I don’t see how anyone can be surprised that repairing public services which were deliberately run down is expensive

Grantanow Fri 22-Nov-24 09:57:30

The correct answer to the OP is, 'Yes, the Tories would have been far worse'.

escaped Fri 22-Nov-24 10:05:22

I'm not surprised that repairing public services is expensive, its just the daft promises which will inevitably be broken. Like 6500 new teachers, without looking at the bigger picture. Far better employing cheaper premises staff, caretakers of old, who can at least clear the snow from DGS's playground so he doesn't miss two days of vital schooling. 🤬

Mollygo Fri 22-Nov-24 11:07:31

Was the school just closed because of the playground escaped?
We had problems getting cars up the local roads which affected buses, parents and staff, but the only playground rule was, sadly, don’t make slides on the playground.
