Oh Mr Starmer … could things be any worse only 4 months in?

Domestically you’re nowhere to be seen. (I know, COP and saving the world jamboree). Your personal ratings have plummeted at -22. Your Chancellor is trying to defend the ‘change’ that Labour told us we needed - VAT on school fees, IHT changes, Net Zero, WFA stopped, inflation up from 1.7 to 2.4% - in your absence. To be honest I feel a bit sorry for RR. Firefighting for all she’s worth while her boss is halfway around the world. Now Starmer is telling us that he used to work on a farm….

Things just seem to be going from bad to worse for him. Buyer’s remorse anyone? Or is it jot early to tell 4 months in and he just needs more time?

MissAdventure Wed 20-Nov-24 23:13:18

Is he claiming expertise?

madalene Wed 20-Nov-24 23:24:12

Did Starmer say he grew up in the countryside?

When did he say that?

I thought we were all told he was brought up in a semi detached house in Surrey, with his father the toolmaker, mother the nurse, and three other siblings. I’ve seen the name of the town somewhere, but I can’t remember it now.

I could look it up I suppose, if I was interested enough to.

MayBee70 Wed 20-Nov-24 23:25:42

Seems to me that everything he says and does is a constant irritation to some people.

Apparently it was his first part-time job when he was 17, makes a change from McDonalds 🤣

Why did he work there too?

I didn’t expect the government to find anything easy. 14 years of Tory mismanagement, of an unnecessary, destructive austerity approach to public services meant huge investment would be needed to scratch the surface to improvement.
The previous government could and should have settled the dispute with doctors. It suited them to let it run, in full knowledge Labour would have to sort it, along with trying to redress the other salary losses teachers, police, social workers etc etc faced

Starmer is the best pm we’ve had in 14 years

OMG 😱

So, which PM over the past 14 years do you think was good at the job and could you give me examples of what they actually achieved?

I’ll answer my own question then. Cameron gave us austerity. And then Brexit. May didn’t ’get Brexit done’ because of Johnson. Johnson then ‘got Brexit done’ (sort of) but, in the process got rid of pretty much most of the decent Conservative MP’s ( those who he didn’t actually get rid of refused to serve under him anyway), tried to illegally prorogue parliament amongst other things, and ended up leaving office in disgrace. Sunak called an election which resulted in such a humiliating defeat for his party that the few remaining decent MP’s lost their seats. Oh, and I’m forgetting Truss who, in the space of, was it,forty days (?) trashed the economy. Not bad for fourteen years in power. Whatever people think of Labour and Starmer it isn’t their fault that the Conservative Party had made themselves unelectable ( which they still are…).

Mollygo Thu 21-Nov-24 02:47:43

No and it wasn’t the conservatives fault that TB and GB and JC made them selves unelectable 3 times!!!

escaped Thu 21-Nov-24 06:41:56

When the leader of the political party you favour is criticised, deservedly or undeservedly, it feels like an insult to your intelligence. After all, you chose them indirectly! So you feel the need to fend off the attacks.
When posters start to call others infantile or insane in their affiliation with a particular party, as I saw on GN certainly over the past 4 years I've been here, it then becomes even more personal and offensive. Is it any wonder, now the boot is on the other foot, that some retaliation for that behaviour will occur? Though I'll quickly add that the OP, and other right leaning GNs, are never as disrespectful and rude in their comments, that I have seen.

No, but we know someone who did! And she got plenty of flak too.
(Though the working class comment was a bit daft too).

MissAdventure Thu 21-Nov-24 06:52:24

Well, still seen nothing to prove everything us wrong.

Just more of the same.

Actually negotiating with doctors etc needed doing.

Did they negotiate with the doctors or just give in? They certainly gave in to the train drivers. They are two powerful groups who now think they can get whatever they ask for. There are other equally important groups who can hold the country to ransom and they will be along with their demands too. The farmers could also copy the French and block road and ports. It wouldn't take them long to disrupt the nation's food supply.

I've heard people say they held their noses and voted KS in. Maybe they should take a trip to a dairy farm and take a good long sniff in.

I think some people have mastered the strange art of being terribly polite and light hearted whilst holding odious views and aligning themselves with dangerous racist extreme right wing group.

Fascinating really. If you include a cartoon and a smiley it makes Farage and his ilk acceptable somehow.

If you re upset and saddened and wish for a more equal society you are deemed disrespectful and rude.

Mamardoit Thu 21-Nov-24 08:30:34

I'm upset and saddened and want a more equal society. The trouble is the government are not showing any sign of getting us there.

Asylum seekers outside the Ibis hotel in Luton in identical puffer coats. Labour has opened more hotels for migrants than it has closed, in defiance of an election promises.

C’mon Yvette Cooper.
You said you had a (3 word) plan “Smash the Gangs”. You ridiculed Rwanda yet put nothing in its place.

After 14 years and decrying everything the Tories suggested things are no better - in fact worse. The rubber boats keep coming because you have no deterrent.

The Tories destroyed themselves by getting rid of Boris, and deserved to be voted out but I am not really comparing with Labour. I have never voted Labour, its the party of tax and spend and they are living upto this. How do you defend losing the winter fuel allowance for pensionerswith the allowances they vote for themselves? Just interested to know.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 21-Nov-24 08:35:46

No cartoon or a smiley from me there Jeanathome.

And by the way, I don’t think my views are ‘odious’.

I find this odious. It's quite clearly racist. What would you have them wear?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 21-Nov-24 08:39:41

Labour in Opposition decried the hollowing out of defence spending. Now? In power with their huge majority they’ve cut it further I read this morning.

I think the (rotten) Tories had a word for these cuts. Erm… oh yes ‘austerity’.

Do Labour just put these cuts down to their word - ‘Change’?
Whatever it is, I don’t like it.

Iam64 Thu 21-Nov-24 08:42:13

No one could expect the small boats to be stopped in a short period of time. Starmer has started the process he promised in establishing working relationships with other European countries facing similar difficulties with asylum seeking people.
As for the identical puffa jackets, that suggests sensible bulk buying rather than handing out cash. It’s extremely cold, the rough sleeping emergency plan has been activated. We can’t afford people freezing to death on our streets

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 21-Nov-24 08:43:40

Oh give over Jeanathome you are determined to find radish here where none exists. I think it’s a very subtle way of shutting down debate. Posters feel they have to back off rather than challenge these slurs and it’s unacceptable.

The point about the identical puffer jackets is to illustrate yet again where hard working taxpayers money is going with regard to these men - irregular migrants. They cost this country an absolute fortune.

You know this.
And it is NOT racist to point this out so give over.

It is neither odious nor racist to want to stop illegal immigration, please keep posting FGT, I love your posts.

Imo Starmer has been busy rebuilding this countries relationships with other countries; something that was somewhat sidelined by the previous government as they were too preoccupied with constant infighting and leadership elections.

Oh dear, not sidelined, just not a priority. This country is in an even worse mess than when the Conservatives left, and they weren't much use either. Now I look around, see the news, not bbc, and I despair even more. We are becoming a laughing stock, police knocking on someones door for criticism of hamas after their atrocity. This Government attacking working people, favouring foreign countries and it's people over their own, billions to Africa for farmers and pot holes. 500 million off our defence spending, when the Russian bear is showing his claws. Still with Starmer the farmer harmer popularity dropping by the day, perhaps we won't have to wait four and a bit years for them to destroy our country completely. Nothing you or any of the Labour grannies will convince me otherwise.

Didn't he work on a farm, then?

I wish I could help MissA, but like you, I have absolutely no idea.
I know his father was a toolmaker though grin

One comedian had a wonderful answer to that statement.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 21-Nov-24 08:46:17

Keir Starmer’s pre election pledge was to reduce our energy bills by £300 a year.

By January 2025 there will be two increases in energy bills on his watch. I am currently listening to Labour’s Secretary of State for Energy, who is repeatedly saying that bills will be £300 less, but adding by 2030.

So not any cheaper then as they are consistently rising…

Iam64 Thu 21-Nov-24 08:47:26
