The Barbour jacket apparently a symbol of the right!

At least Barbour and Dryrobe are both very successful British brands. We should feel proud! 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

Barbour jackets are handed down to younger generations in our family. Old and shabby like my riding coat which has a full length padded gilet. Indestructible and perfectly fit for purpose on heavy rainy/snowy cold days outdoors. Hunter wellies last for years and are also handed down.

I have noticed dry robes are popular in the equestrian world now.

Who said this. What a load of rubbish, mine is twenty years old and going strong, what's more it does the job.

I've never liked the look of them and prefer something warm and snuggly.
But each to his own.
My country life style is a bit different to some others country life style.

Let's face it, it's the coat that lasts forever, it's a wise buy. I've had a full length one for about 30 years. Admittedly don't wear as much as I used too, but still in good condition.
Have Barbour long leather boots as well, brilliant for bad weather.

The Barbour is the 'uniform' automatically identified with the likes of Nigel Farage, for better or worse.

I'm sure that duffel - coat - wearing Paddington Bear is politically neutral.

He might be and it is lovely. However, Michael Foot was taken to task for wearing a garment at the Cenotaph year that a red top (I forget which one) called a donkey jacket. In fact it was a green duffle coat style, made by Jaeger and bought by his wife from Harrods.

IMO Barbours showing signs of wear are OK but new ones are a bit naff.

Well I have a new one. A black Barbour puffa jacket and it certainly isn’t naff. You might have said that about the very worn looking green waxed Barbour 40 years ago but not today.

Just love a Barbour jacket! Have my lovely LH's one and love wearing it (with pink Hunter wellies for me as my very old green ones got punctured when my son, who was about 11 at the time, borrowed them to go out to play in). Barbours keep the chill Scottish wind out and last for ever. LH's one went on to local shop to get cleaned and rewaxed but then there was an outbreak of foot and mouth so the jacket was quarantined for weeks! Also have a couple of Aussie wax jackets and a nice Irish one. Won't part with them as they were all gifts from LH. Had a Drizzanone years ago but the mice got it!!!

Oh, dryrobes are very trendy now! All the wild swimmers round here have them, but we've spotted loads of them on campsites too - and even on the school run!

They come in really handy when ferrying children to and from swimming lessons in the winter. Much easier than wrangling them out of wet swimmers in the changing room.

My 25yr old quilted Barbour is warm, waterproof, and protects me from the bitter wind that slices across the fields when I take the dog out whilst wearing my trusty Dunlop Wellies.( with 2 pairs of sox, they aren’t warm, just waterproof)

I don’t think Barbour jackets, the traditional waxed ones are practical at all and have been over taken by warmer and gore tex, modern fabrics. I think they are a bit of a status symbol for city dwellers.

Well! Hmmmm, I wonder what i am then, as a country dweller i do own a barbour and i also own a gloriously impractical pink duffle.

Real country people buy their wellies at the local country store.

They certainly don’t wear Barbour boots, as they tend to split. I do know a few sheep farmers who wear Le Chameau though, they are a lot more comfortable than the Dunlops. I didn’t realise you could even buy wellies that cost £400!

I think this is hilarious, I have owned a series of Barbour jackets and coats over the past 40 years, my husband has numerous jackets from the brand as do both my sons, my daughter not any more…….perhaps she is leaning to the left!
I have always viewed them as good value practical and classic clothing, we have had ours reconditioned so sustainable too!

So if the Barbour jacket is a sartorial symbol of the right then what will the left be sporting this winter?

When I first moved to a rural setting, nearly 40 years ago, I bought a Barbour jacket. I never replaced it. It didn't keep out the cold or the wind without layers of stuff underneath.

I didn't replace it. I'd never buy another one..
