The Barbour jacket apparently a symbol of the right!

I think this is hilarious, I have owned a series of Barbour jackets and coats over the past 40 years, my husband has numerous jackets from the brand as do both my sons, my daughter not any more…….perhaps she is leaning to the left!
I have always viewed them as good value practical and classic clothing, we have had ours reconditioned so sustainable too!

So if the Barbour jacket is a sartorial symbol of the right then what will the left be sporting this winter?

This won’t please my undergraduate DGD who comandeered my twenty year old one recently and would be appalled to be labelled right wing. Obviously something else to hold against Nigel F!

GrannyGravy13 Wed 20-Nov-24 17:53:29

That is hilarious and ridiculous at the same time 🤣🤣🤣

I wonder what brand is a symbol of the left?

M0nica Wed 20-Nov-24 17:56:28

It used to be Gannex.

When I first moved to a rural setting, nearly 40 years ago, I bought a Barbour jacket. I never replaced it. It didn't keep out the cold or the wind without layers of stuff underneath.

I didn't replace it. I'd never buy another one..

Perhaps they just don't keep lefties very warm 😁

MissAdventure Wed 20-Nov-24 18:07:06

The point is, will it stop people from wearing Barbour, now?
I can see how it might have been adopted by people who want to appear a particular way.

Greyduster Wed 20-Nov-24 18:09:32

I have a picture of me somewhere wearing my Barbour jacket and a tweed stalker hat (I have never stalked anything or anyone I hasten to add). I’ve always been fond of country clothing. Let the idiots on X think what they will.. S*d them!

MaizieD Wed 20-Nov-24 18:13:15

I go to a fair number of horse based events locally. I don't recall when I last noticed anyone wearing a Barbour. At this time of year it tends to be well insulated puffa type coats and jackets...

So they're clearly lefties too...

(I do know someone who shoots. I'll have to ask him if he's got one...)

Business people in pristine Barbour jackets are so obviously trying too hard, whatever party they are supporting. I expect that Community Clothing is the order of the day for the eco conscious Left.

Unfortunately like anything a Barbour jacket needs to be worn in!
I have some embarrassingly pristine wellingtons, my last pair were nearly 20 years old and had been repaired.
So it’s not trying too hard it’s just life.

madalene Wed 20-Nov-24 18:29:28

I don’t have a Barbour jacket.
Does that make me left wing?

Casdon Wed 20-Nov-24 18:39:38

Definitely not madalene. I’ve got one, and I’m not remotely Tory. They don’t take long to wear in if you use them as they are intended.

keepingquiet Wed 20-Nov-24 18:43:19

Didn't we all wear them in the 80s? Mine lasted a few years and never replaced. I've never voted Tory.

Duffel coats

madalene Wed 20-Nov-24 18:52:18

Well if they’re now a badge of the left, I’ll steer clear thank you. I’m quite happy with my feather and down snuggly coat, it keeps me lovely and warm. I just wore it this afternoon to go for my walk in the local park.

Are parks left wing or right wing these days?

Oreo Wed 20-Nov-24 18:53:06

I’ve never owned a Barbour or wanted to come to that.I don’t have the country lifestyle for one.

madalene Wed 20-Nov-24 18:54:04

Oooh Oreo, I used to have a duffel coat.
Did you say that’s for the left wingers?
I’ll never keep up with this political fashion, my brain’s too old for it.

Casdon Wed 20-Nov-24 18:54:57

They aren’t a symbol of anything madalene, in their rightful role they are a functional coat worn by country dwellers, designed to keep the rain and mud off, and the thorns out. They aren’t right, left or centre.

BlueBelle Wed 20-Nov-24 18:56:25

Well it is isn’t it 🤣🤣🤣

What a relief.
I’d never be able to cope with it all. smile

🤭I had a dark green one years ago ( duffel) nice and warm but like you I prefer a padded coat, light and so toasty warm.

Exactly. As one of said country dwellers, I had one for many years - if you look after them and rewax them regularly, they last forever.

Georgesgran Wed 20-Nov-24 19:03:25

After DH died, there was enough Barbour stuff to stock a small shop! All went to the local Hospice Shop.

Shinamae Wed 20-Nov-24 19:06:57

I’ll stick to my reefer jacket, thank you….😁

Georgesgran Wed 20-Nov-24 19:09:05

By the way, I was out with DD2’s dog earlier - he was wearing his Barbour coat! I wore my Barbour jacket, scarf, socks and pink wellies.
Barbour is a local brand, worn by many from all walks of life.
