The Barbour jacket apparently a symbol of the right!

In a viral tweet on X, seen more than two million times, one person wrote: 'The Barbour jacket is fast becoming a new overt symbol for the right', with another adding: 'Barbour Jackets are clearly the new uniform for a new reign of terror.'

I think this is hilarious, I have owned a series of Barbour jackets and coats over the past 40 years, my husband has numerous jackets from the brand as do both my sons, my daughter not any more…….perhaps she is leaning to the left!
I have always viewed them as good value practical and classic clothing, we have had ours reconditioned so sustainable too!

So if the Barbour jacket is a sartorial symbol of the right then what will the left be sporting this winter?

^Often there are cars with foreign registrations - especially German and Scandinavian - in the car park and their owners are easy to spot inside, usually carrying a long list and walking around with arms full of stuff to take back home to family and friends^.

Interesting article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine from last winter. All about the many facets to owning a Barbour - practicality, durability, sex appeal, popularity, emulating royalty etc. I read all the article and the emphasis was on the jacket's "müffelndes Statussymbol", its understated status-symbol, even in Germany! They too see the irony of it being worn by city people who don't know the difference between a rabbit and a raccoon!

That image is a hoot! thank you..

I don’t want or need any kind of waxed coat/ jacket but would love a suede coat/jacket if my fairy godmother is listening🤭

PS forgot to say that the Frankfurter Allgemeine is a very prestigious German newspaper, but ja, it's right-wing.

Well they do drive on the right, so they’ve got a head start!

As I wrote upthread I’m not too far from the Barbour factory - about 11miles. They have a factory shop, divided into the latest stuff and a back room of older stock, some seconds. As you can imagine, it’s very, very popular.

They must all be on the right too 🤣

By the way, I was out with DD2’s dog earlier - he was wearing his Barbour coat! I wore my Barbour jacket, scarf, socks and pink wellies.
Barbour is a local brand, worn by many from all walks of life.

👍🏻😊

I'm very left, and proud to be, and own a Barbour jacket. If people assume I'm right by wearing it, I'm burning it immediately!

😩

Missiseff How disappointing, why herd with the sheep, why not do what you want in your way and to hell with anyone who tries to herd you.

One of the biggest pleasures I get from reading the DailyMail, skipthe politics, is a good paper, is the knowledge that it annoys the hell out of other people and leads people to make lots of erroneous judgements about me.

One of the advantages of being considered 'odd' even as quite a young child is that I rapidly decided that I couldn't care less what people think of me - and never have.

I now believe it was all a big joke, which people on the left fell for it, hook, line & sinker

Mind you so did I !

A lot of farmers wear waterproof jackets from companies like Berghaus these days. Also their off road vehicle is likely to be a Japanese ot Korean make as they're more relaible than Land Rovers.

M0nica Fri 22-Nov-24 18:24:43

Don't confuse the brand with the jacket. There are a number of companies out there making wax jackets. Practical sensible wear for those working outside before the development of modern materials. I was looking at one today, in a charity shop, made by a company in Lincolnshire.

DH has a suede jacket, an exact copy of a wax jacket, and difficult to differentiate - he bought it in France.

Personally I love undermining all these silly prejudices.

We read the Daily Mail and carry it so it can be seen, when out, just to watch the faces of those who notice it and watch them reach totally erroneous conclusions about our political beliefs.

Apparently having pampas grass in the front garden shows the house owner is open to wife-swapping!
I guess that’s for another thread.

Oh, come on, don't you recognise yet another set up?

Independent news

"A screenshot has been shared across the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, purporting to show an opinion article written by Yvette Cooper, headlined: “People who have Christmas trees in their living room may be far right. Please be vigilant as the festive season approaches.”

Evaluation

The screenshot is fake. Although it matches the correct typeface and the same byline image of Ms Cooper as used by The Guardian, there is no evidence it was ever published online. The image was first distributed by a social media user who has previously posted a different fake editorial article.

The PA news agency could not find any evidence that the Home Secretary has previously voiced any opposition to the celebration of Christmas or associated it with far-right politics. Last year, Ms Cooper gave away mince pies and her office organised a competition to design a Christmas card at a primary school in her constituency."

And Yvette Fielding has come out with another hilarious theory i.e. “Having a Christmas tree in your window could be seen as a far right supporter”. And this is the sort of person in our government right now..Words fail me…

John Lewis have good deals on their Barbour range at the moment.

I have many times Farzanah, I live in mid Wales and they are everywhere near me. There are a few less elegant looks around too though, one old farmer who lives up the road piles tweed jackets one on top of the other when it’s cold, I can’t work out if the inner jacket has had the sleeves cut out.

Farzanah Fri 22-Nov-24 13:09:24

I’ve never seen mid Wales farmers in Barbours. Whilst out walking in the hills I came across a shepherd with an old gaberdine type coat tied with string around the middle!

Marg75 Fri 22-Nov-24 12:31:42

I have a Barbour jacket and I vote Conservative!

You are right Oreo, its total tosh. I wear what is comfortable & I’ve had many a duffle coat (but too heavy now)

They score a resounding "could do better", ecologically.

At least Barbour and Dryrobe are both very successful British brands. We should feel proud! 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

Yes we certainly should
