For anyone unhappy at the current government there is a petition available to sign. When I signed it last night there were 170k signatures - to say it's gathered pace is an understatement as it now stands at well over one million signatures.

There seem to be very short memories of what a mess we were in before the last General Election. A lot of the measures needing to be taken now are because of the problems which were left by the previous Government .

Really, money laid by for projects in planning under the Conservatives, well it's become a a bigger mess under Labour, massive pay rises to already very well paid train drivers. The Dr's yes, but they're going on strike again in January, they now know they can hold the Gov to ransom. Billions to Africa, one of the first things they did, not necessary, while in the meantime helping destroy family farms and eventually our food supplies, whilst encouraging cheap tasteless imports from abroad. Taking money from people who were born here, and helped to build this country, many of them now feeling the cold,. Asylum bill rising exponentially, these people are so happy Labour are in, they said so in Calais, no disincentive now , is there. If you think this is a good thing, there is no hope for this country under a Labour Government.

Not forgetting the Employers higher NI payments, which in turn will mean fewer jobs, no wage rises , business closing,, the backbone of this country. Always knew Reeves the complaints manager, couldn't add up,

ronib Mon 25-Nov-24 07:53:27

The only advantage then is that Rachael should be able to handle complaints Freya5. Now we know what her skill set is.

Luckygirl3 Mon 25-Nov-24 08:04:42

This has a hint of America! .... don't get your own way? ... stamp your foot! Let's storm Westminster!

Deary me. We have lived with the outcome of a knife edge brexit result which no doubt all these signatories see as fair, and they are stamping their feet about a landslide. Just crazy.

ronib Mon 25-Nov-24 08:13:56

No one is stamping feet over a landslide Luckygirl3. The petition posted states truthfully that Labour is not delivering on its promises. The form of words is -

I believe that the current Labour government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election.

ronib Mon 25-Nov-24 08:15:39

In other words….. snake oil merchants.

Luckygirl3 Mon 25-Nov-24 08:24:39

They have not gone back on promises .... they have responded to the hidden mess they were left .... something they have to get on with before they can get down to their real agenda.

ronib Mon 25-Nov-24 08:33:34

Luckygirl13 do you mean the very convenient and always mentioned £22 billion black hole?

keepingquiet Mon 25-Nov-24 08:51:38

Someone has to fill it. Get used to the consequences of Brexit. Dismissed, I think, as project fear but even if we're poorer at least we have our soveriegnty back.

Babs03 Mon 25-Nov-24 09:15:46

We can no more go against the votes of millions in an election than we could call for another referendum to overturn Brexit - much as I wish we could.
Democracies don’t work like that, as the US will realise with another 4 years of Trump.
You get what you vote for.
And many times over the 14 years of a Tory government I wished we could call for a snap election but it is what it is.

foxie48 Mon 25-Nov-24 09:21:06

Although we seem to follow the US in many ways we still have a five year term for govt not the four year one of the US president!
At least the LP had a manifesto, unlike Reform which seemed to be a list of wild promises with little in the way of intended action, very like Trump!
Four years and eight months left before Starmer has to call an election, I'm sure the petition will have reached at least 6 million or will it just have died a death?

LizzieDrip Mon 25-Nov-24 09:21:21

Please could someone, who wants another election, tell me what they would expect their party of choice (presumably Tory and/or Reform) do differently - that would turn the country around within months?

Mt61 Mon 25-Nov-24 09:29:24

Agree with all that Freya5, they pretended they were a government for the people, pretended they would be the new government for change, (for the better), when in fact they are just changing things for the worse.
Sending millions to foreign farmers! What about are farmers? Ludicrous!

vintage1950 Mon 25-Nov-24 09:30:24

Oh please, not another election, not with the world in the state it's in!

Well Reform for a start would not be encouraging illegal migration, these poor people are being enticed to come here risking their lives. They also, I am sure would protect our farmers.
I haven’t heard that train drivers are going on strike, if they are, that’s just pure greed.

If Farage ever came anywhere close to leading this country (God help us all) he would very quickly realise there’s a lot more to it than trade deals with his bestie!

He would probably cr** himself!

I think he would do well!

I think he would too.

I am looking forward to hearing Rachael Reeves address the CBI today. At least it won’t be another Peppa Pig moment.
Reeves has raised £40 billion in increased taxes which will impact on the job market so interesting to hear how it’s spun before the CBI.

Exactly lucky- they have been handed a very very sick pup, and no money for treatment, or vet for that matter. And are in an impossible situation. It will take time. It took Tories 14 years to scupper the country and leave it it a terrible state. The money will have to come from somewhere.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 25-Nov-24 10:14:21

Labour, so far, have been a disappointment.. But, the other lot were a disappointment for 14 years - so I can’t see what a new election could achieve. 🤷‍♀️

I’m with you Diamond Lily.

The country seems in a febrile mood at present. I suppose KS will get to hear of the figures (I’m not signing it) and it might encourage him to Do Something Popular soon. He has not got the vast majority of voters. In fact most didn’t vote for him and some who did have ‘buyers remorse’ I think right now.

He could announce a plan regarding ‘irregular immigration’ or
Tackle being able to claim benefits for self identification of anxiety - which is now classed as a disability. Sheesh. That alone is costing the country a bluddy fortune. MH issues (some of them) are definitely the new ‘backache’. Hard to disprove.

When did the UK suddenly become ‘so sick’?
Clue: When you could claim money for it.

henetha Mon 25-Nov-24 10:17:25

I see no point in calling a GE. Labour were democratically elected and should serve their term. And who would replace them? The last government were hopeless.
Even though I'm not exactly delighted with this Labour government we have to give them a chance.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 25-Nov-24 10:20:06

I have posted on the other similar thread that I haven’t and will not sign this petition.

I was holding my breath (metaphorically) and hoping for better from Labour.

Unfortunately their first act of withdrawing WFA was in my opinion wrong, and it has gone downhill from there.

twinnytwin Mon 25-Nov-24 10:20:14

I signed as soon as I read about it. And DH. I know it wont result in an early election but hopefully it will give the Labour government the message that a huge number (almost 2m when I signed) are extremely unhappy with the decisions Labour's made so far and hopefully it will impact the decisions they've yet to make.

petal53 Mon 25-Nov-24 10:26:53

FGT
I don’t think Keir Starmer is particularly bothered about whether or not he’s popular, wxcept in the run up to the election when he knew he had to be popular in order to get elected. My assessment of his personality, which of course maybe wrong, but this is what I feel, is that he’s a bit of a loner who sticks steadfastly to what he wants to do, regardless of any consequences. He’s simply not bothered about other people.

Others will of course disagree, especially if they are fans.

I also thinks he likes being seen in the world stage, rather more than he likes being here, getting on with the mundane and having to hear how unpopular he is, although as I said, I don’t think he’s bothered about being unpopular.

But the massive disappointment, concern, and anger is largely from people who didn’t vote Labour in the first place Primrose53 - which is entirely predictable, surely.

Yes and it's mostly fronted by the Telegraph, the well known Tory rag.

Good to see FGT and Gg13 are keeping their sensible feet on the ground. This government, like all governments won’t please all of the people all of the time. I’m not delighted with everything but I feel safer than I did with the conservatives
