For anyone unhappy at the current government there is a petition available to sign. When I signed it last night there were 170k signatures - to say it's gathered pace is an understatement as it now stands at well over one million signatures.

Well ronib, at least you’ve admitted that your opinion is based on education from 20 years ago.
As someone who has recent, relevant experience of the state education system (both personally and professionally) I can absolutely assure you, things have changed a lot in the last 20 years (as you would expect)!
HPQ Labour needs to take responsibility for its actions surely? Why give them a free pass?

ZEV mandate came into law on 03.01.2024 under the last Conservative govt, the LP has decided to review it. Seems a bit rich to blame the closing of a factory on a Labour Government the decision would not have been made in the last four months and there have been plans to close Luton under both it's last owners and Stellantis for a number of years.
Everything, including Storm Bert is the fault of the new Labour govt according to many on GN.
LizzieDrip 25 years ago State schools were failing bright children - a headteacher admitted as much to my friend. Both her children hated school and left at 16 and later progressed to reach their potential. So yes I am basing my opinion on 20 years ago and also on my experience of a wilful failure to help pupils with dyslexia which at that time was not taken at all seriously.
You may think Einstein might have thrived in our comprehensive system but I don’t.
ronib I have two highly intelligent grandsons (one is particularly gifted) who both attend the local comprehensive. Both are extended appropriate to their needs and both are making excellent progress - as are their friends of all abilities.
In addition to their academic progress, the school offers a huge range of extra curricular activities, helping to produce well-rounded, creative, engaged young men.
This is not an ‘extraordinary’ comprehensive. In our socioeconomically diverse area, it is the norm rather than the exception.
I do wonder if people who decry state education as ‘failing the gifted’ have any real, recent experience of a modern comprehensive school!
Labour has stopped hospital building altogether.

I’m still waiting for things that the Conservatives promised in previous elections which nearly made me vote for them ( but thankfully I didn’t).
Like the 40 new hospitals and fixing social care for once and for all, both Johnson promises?
growstuff I am not talking about the many many intelligent males in State education but my view is that the top two percent IQ may well drop out of education through sheer boredom. In one case, education resumed as an adult ending in a PhD in chemistry . I believe that the very bright cohort needs to be extended and private schools are better resourced to do that.

*foxie48*. France will take over the manufacture of conventional vans. Their gain - our loss. Labour supports the loss of jobs at Luton.
The Labour Party is striking against the aspirational middle classes whilst leaving the upper class still firmly in pole position. This is true for its policies on inheritance tax on farming and vat on school fees. The upper classes can absorb vat increases on school fees but the lower middle classes will struggle. I feel for the gifted child from an average income family especially if male. Individual freedom of choice is for the birds.
I would save your sympathy, if I were you. Many very intelligent males do very well in comprehensive schools (as do many not so intelligent males - and females.)

I think there's an auto correct mistake in the post!
I still can't work out why you think the Luton closure has anything to do with the Labour party.Perhaps read what the comany has said about the very great pressure re net zero and electric cars, very much blames the Gov. As does the Union.
Have you read what the company has claimed about Brexit?

^I hate to say it but I really think he could have the same problem Trump had when he had a sore ear. He's upset so many people in such a short time^
sazz1 what???
Starmer's mere existence is enough to upset some people. Honestly folks, just get on with it, he's here to stay for the rest of his five year term unless his party wants him out. We only have to look at the shambles caused by the Conservatives game of "musical chairs" to know how destructive it is to keep changing the leader. tbh I don't think Badenoch is good enough to stay in charge for too long and if I voted Conservative I'd be glad to be out of office and would want some time to try to get a more cohesive party.

*LizzieDrip*. Males definitely don’t conform in the same way as females at school. Very highly intelligent boys may well be disadvantaged in the local comprehensive or academy. It’s a pity if only wealthy families are able to find the best education for their children.
Paying for education doesn’t always mean you get better teaching.
Smaller classes, more opportunities, absolutely.
But it isn’t a “choice” the majority of us have, especially if you have more than one child.
There are plenty of very good secondary schools, including academies and grammar schools and a myriad of additional private tuition to help in any “weak” areas.

growstuff didn’t Labour push dates forward from 2035 to 2030 for Zev? Labour certainly supported the Conservatives over this.
I find it hard to believe anyone in their right mind thinks a petition to call for another GE is a good idea. We've just had an election! Sounds like the sort of miserable thing people like Musk would promote to undermine the country. I don't agree with everything the new labour government is doing but I do think they are moving in a more positive direction than the previous one and can't please everyone all the time.

foxie48 Labour has enforced quotas for electric car and van sales which the Vauxhall Luton site did not like in its business model?
Plans to shut down the Luton plant have been in the pipeline for longer than the Labour government has been in power. The owners were complaining about post-Brexit tariffs last year. They also have spare capacity in some of their EU plants. The government has just announced a consultation about the ZEV mandate, which it didn't itself impose.

Not many of us like the Victorian state government ( mainly because, like Starmer’s mob, they don’t tell the truth) . I wouldn’t say there is a particular discontent otherwise, most can’t be bothered with any of them. That’s one reason we have compulsory voting here I think! A parallel is that we have no opposition really but I prefer our Labour lot to those in UK just now, I quite like Albo and quite a few of his ministers are decent types. Penny Wong seems like a good foreign minister.
Nanna8 are you in Australia ? I am there now and there is huge discontent across the board so it could be a global discontent issue ??
