Drones over lakenheath

Hi just been listening to Tom Swarbrick on the Radio. Apparently there are super efficient drones over all our RAF bases and no one has said they know what’s going on. An expert rang in and said it’s very worrying as the drones are going over even where the airmen are based. He thinks this is Russia. Another caller reckons they are alien! Any one any thoughts? Apparently it has been going on a week.

I do not like drones - I find them to be the “murder hornets” of war and so intrusive on personal / corporate levels.

To me, there are very few redeeming qualities of drones, but using them in rescue purposes…. they can go in places that humans cannot.

Good grief… if after one week they’re still up there and have not been shot down as being the enemy, I’d say the RAF (and US?) forces know what’s going on.

If your country is being surveilled and under attack, you’d know it.

Are they in fact US drones being tested, training drone pilots.
The Russians are using them in Ukraine, there have been videos of them chasing and killing Ukrainian soldiers.

You're assuming what you heard was true. So rather than post assumptions you should check out exactly what's going on.It's called fact checking. That's the responsible thing to do.

How do you do that? If there is an embargo on the news, for security/military reasons, as merlotgran says, they won't be sharing the information for anyone to check.

We might find out in 50 years' time. Or 100 years.
If we're still here.

LadyInBlue Sat 30-Nov-24 22:40:07

Don't worry, the RAF will have it under control. The same with Russia, I am not worrying because if a war does start we won't be here to see it finish, no-one will be.

I would imagine with today’s technology, any threatening drones could be negated by technological know how. Aren’t they saying, for example, that the drones being used around prisons can be disabled by a technological wizardry? (i.e. confusing them in some way?) I could well be wrong, I’m certainly no technology wizard myself, but I would think that our secret services/defences/ technology brains know how to deal with drones other than blowing them up and risking damage to urban areas?

Whatever the drones are or have been up to I’m sure the RAF and USAF have the matter under control. They’re hardly likely to share the information with us.

They should shoot them down

EVen if they contain chemical warfare, diseases, nuclear material.

They are the modern cholera and pestilence version of rotten pigs sent over walls in a siege.

I see drones frequently when walking the mountain close by. I have never given them second thought, but my dog is terrified of them he hears them before I see them My son has a drone but he's not doing anything for the Russians.

Any more news/info? Nothing on TV News or Press, of course.

I imagine the mainstream press would have picked it up big time if there were any real veracity to the claims. Seems like conspiracy theory territory.
Probably US or UK testing their "stuff" and no, we don't expect test plans of the military to be in the public domain.

I think the RAF will know who are flying the drones and if the country was in danger the drones would have been shot down or removed by hi tec forces.

Probably the R.A.F. or the ministry of defence, or both have a shrewd idea whose drones these are and doubtless could shoot them down.

The trouble here is that doing so would be a marvellous way of starting an international incident, so I imagine that right now the ambassadors of any country who might, just might , be involved is sitting either in the ministry of defence, the home office or with MI 5 and 6 explaining that the country he or she represents has nothing to do with the matter.

This is what is known as diplomacy, in case you did not know, and is the first step taken in cases like these.

Blasting unidentified drones out of ones airspace or territorial waters without going the diplomatic route first is a really good way of staring something that might lead to a war.

Drones? Why don’t they just shoot them down? Most countries would. Unless they knew what they were,of course.

They can be carrying harmful substances - explosives / bacteria.

The website looks somewhat iffy to me, not UK based and with a clear agenda. Doesn’t sound like it’s exactly anti-war….
Much like some of our right wing press which seems to be convinced (and is trying to convince its readers too) that war is coming/unavoidable/imminent. Pick whichever alarmist term suits best. Meanwhile we carry on and garner our news from multiple sources, to recognise the bullshit and know from whence it comes.

Check out wiki re United States Air Force in the United Kingdom .. I understand that 13 US air bases still in UK and also that part of end of WWII settlement UK paid of some of USA war debt by "giving" US total control/ownership of some/most strategic UK air bases .. perhaps the "special realtionship" oft referred to

For many a year American aircraft have whizzed in and out of Lakenheath, great to watch

Since RAF Lakenheath actually has a well-signposted designated “viewing area” and cars full of plane spotters parked all along the roadside some days, I doubt anyone could learn any more with drones!
