A bit of an institution, but maybe someone will save it - who knows.

Has coffee overtaken tea as our national drink?

Tea first thing in the morning for me, rehydrating. I prefer loose tea to teabags and Booths English Breakfast tea is the best. I’m currently touring Sri Lanka and it was fascinating to visit a tea factory and all the different types of teas. Sadly a decent cup of tea is impossible to obtain here in any of the hotels. Tea bags ir nothing and UHT milk just isn’t right!

I don’t like ordinary tea but really enjoy Twinings Earl Grey. I have the decaffinated version.

I’m not keen on tea. We keep some tea bags for visitors and workmen - usually a supermarket own brand. I wouldn’t buy tea in a café - I much prefer coffee, especially freshly ground. I love the smell! 😎☕️

Clawdy I’ve always liked Barry’s tea when I’m in Ireland but I think Yorkshire teabags are the best. So I’ve stopped buying them when i visit my family now in Ireland.

I haven't drunk tea since it made me sick when pregnant with my first born. He is 49 in December!

Coffee and water for me now.

Clawdy Sat 30-Nov-24 17:47:06

Barry's Irish Tea is the best.

I don't think Typhoo was ever the best tea. My grannie said it was stoor, sweepings off the factory floor.

Only Yorkshire tea for me. I buy 600 bags at a time from
Amazon. Living in the USA you really want your British tea!!

Funnygran Sat 30-Nov-24 16:29:47

Typhoo was the only tea my mum bought. When I got married 55 years ago she found an offer for newly weds and I received a tea caddy and tray from them which I still have somewhere. But I gave up drinking it years ago as the taste seemed to change. Yorkshire tea is all I buy now and their decaf is excellent.

Rendella Sat 30-Nov-24 14:29:37

It is always Yorkshire Tea for me.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 30-Nov-24 13:06:24

Remember “you only get an OOH! with Typhoo!”. 🤣
I think the high end teas survive and the cheaper supermarket brands but there’s probably a few middle-of-the-roaders struggling nowadays.

Visiting US I was amused to see "Liptons. Britain's favourite tea". I remember it at Redmans I have seen cans of Lipton's lemon tea in dispensing machines. Certainly not even a well known brand
Is one of the large brands owned by Liptons?

poppysmum Sat 30-Nov-24 12:55:47

The Gnu who drank Typhoo any one remember that ad years ago?
I think we mainly drank PG tips or Liptons
Do have some decaf tea bags in the cupboard could be any make but we tend to have coffee more; as buying milk often means it goes off before we use it all, we tend to buy those sachets of coffee with milk added or use instant coffee and those little pots of milk you get on trays in hotels.
those coffees are great lots of flavours when we rent the chalet for long weekends usually out of season the shop onsite is often shut so its brilliant to have a drink anytime without worrying where to get milk

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I can't understand the obsession with tea, I haven't drank it since I was 10, it tastes disgusting.

Coffee tastes disgusting to me - each to their own

Unfortunately since I had chemo, I can't stand the taste of coffee either so I basically drink no more than water these days. I agree each to their own.

I don't think I ever had a cup of Typhoo tea. Growing up, my mother bought PG Tips. These days we drink Co-op own brand tea or Yorkshire tea. I still prefer tea over coffee.

AGAA4 Sat 30-Nov-24 12:08:51

I look forward to my first cup of tea in the morning. It used to be typhoo but I've been buying Yorkshire tea for a long time. I know quite a few people use Yorkshire tea. Sad that Typhoo has gone for those who liked it.

TheWeirdoAgain59 Sat 30-Nov-24 12:02:12

PG Tips is my favourite but Typhoo comes in 2nd!

I hate any sort of coffee in any shape or form and won't touch it so tea it is!

theworriedwell Sat 30-Nov-24 11:46:07

I got kissed by far to many old women smelling of gin to like the smell. Just the mere whiff of gin makes me want to vomit.

I grew up in a public house so lots of gin drinking old women about. Maybe that's why I'm teetotal.

Claribell Sat 30-Nov-24 11:30:02

Apparently gin and tonic is the no.1 choice now.

Used to drink Typhoo, but the taste changed years ago, leaves and bags. But sad to think it is going.

Yes, I agree. As a child Typhoo was our "family" tea and you could get a lovely mid-amber, fragrant brew. Not any more I'm afraid, so I only drink freshly brewed coffee.
I don't really like the taste of any supermarket or branded teas now, though my family sometimes buy me nice tins of better tea at Christmas and I do drink them.

sandye Sat 30-Nov-24 11:19:11

I have always drank coffee, don't like the tannin taste in tea. Although I like red wine and the can be the same. Strange

SillyNanny321 Sat 30-Nov-24 11:12:42

I prefer Yorkshire now but when younger we always had Typhoo. Another of our ‘institutions’ disappearing! Made good ‘Busmans Tea’ my Pop always said, being a Busman, conductor on the old trolleybuses then newer buses that took over. Always a cuppa as soon as he was home!
