A bit of an institution, but maybe someone will save it - who knows.

Has coffee overtaken tea as our national drink?

kittylester Thu 28-Nov-24 19:22:19

This was reported last week and it made me very sad.

Visgir1 Thu 28-Nov-24 19:25:40

Yes...tbh I would rather have Coffee if given the choice.

David49 Thu 28-Nov-24 19:28:05

Decaf for me these days I can’t do caffeine like I used to

Used to drink Typhoo, but the taste changed years ago, leaves and bags. But sad to think it is going.

Well my Dad drank nothing but Typhoo tea all his life. He died about two years ago....

Ditto my dad. He died three years ago. Have we stumbled on the reason for Typhoo’s demise?

Typhoo was a staple in our house growing up. Tea was never my favourite drink and now I drink rooibos if I drink tea at all, but it’s sad to see these old favourite brands disappearing.

I think there are a number of reasons. The increasing popularity of coffee, especially among the young, must have led to a decrease in tea drinking.
Also, the popularity of ‘own brand’ tea sold by the supermarkets must have had an effect.

😁 Very possibly. There was never any coffee in our house when we were growing up.

One of my brothers got a hankering for Camp coffee when he was a teenager but other than that we only drank tea. I don't think I had coffee until I moved to London, simply because I was used to drinking tea. Now we all drink coffee, just DM left to keep Typhoo going but obviously isn't drinking enough tea.

I prefer Yorkshire tea.. but it is sad to see this company becoming defunct..

Desdemona Fri 29-Nov-24 19:19:08

It is sad to see another company going. Maybe not so surprising though.

I tend to drink more coffee than tea and I generally buy a supermarket own brand 'extra strong' variety - so much cheaper than the branded teabags.

Louella12 Fri 29-Nov-24 19:23:06

Gosh, that's a surprise!

We always had TyPhoo until I discovered Ringtons and that was the end of my relationship with TyPhoo.

theworriedwell Fri 29-Nov-24 20:57:55

Growing up it was always typhoo but for years if used Sainsbury's red label.

SillyNanny321 Sat 30-Nov-24 11:12:42

I prefer Yorkshire now but when younger we always had Typhoo. Another of our ‘institutions’ disappearing! Made good ‘Busmans Tea’ my Pop always said, being a Busman, conductor on the old trolleybuses then newer buses that took over. Always a cuppa as soon as he was home!

sandye Sat 30-Nov-24 11:19:11

I have always drank coffee, don't like the tannin taste in tea. Although I like red wine and the can be the same. Strange

Yes, I agree. As a child Typhoo was our "family" tea and you could get a lovely mid-amber, fragrant brew. Not any more I'm afraid, so I only drink freshly brewed coffee.
I don't really like the taste of any supermarket or branded teas now, though my family sometimes buy me nice tins of better tea at Christmas and I do drink them.

Claribell Sat 30-Nov-24 11:30:02

Apparently gin and tonic is the no.1 choice now.

theworriedwell Sat 30-Nov-24 11:46:07

I got kissed by far to many old women smelling of gin to like the smell. Just the mere whiff of gin makes me want to vomit.

I grew up in a public house so lots of gin drinking old women about. Maybe that's why I'm teetotal.

TheWeirdoAgain59 Sat 30-Nov-24 12:02:12

PG Tips is my favourite but Typhoo comes in 2nd!

I hate any sort of coffee in any shape or form and won't touch it so tea it is!

AGAA4 Sat 30-Nov-24 12:08:51

I look forward to my first cup of tea in the morning. It used to be typhoo but I've been buying Yorkshire tea for a long time. I know quite a few people use Yorkshire tea. Sad that Typhoo has gone for those who liked it.

MiniMoon Sat 30-Nov-24 12:12:49

I don't think I ever had a cup of Typhoo tea. Growing up, my mother bought PG Tips. These days we drink Co-op own brand tea or Yorkshire tea. I still prefer tea over coffee.

I can't understand the obsession with tea, I haven't drank it since I was 10, it tastes disgusting.

Unfortunately since I had chemo, I can't stand the taste of coffee either so I basically drink no more than water these days. I agree each to their own.
