Nearly £200,000 for pensioners in poverty…
I’m sure some of you will find a negative even in that…🤓

Wyllow3 Tue 03-Dec-24 10:07:25

If the money is not for its care homes but individuals, this is the process and the limits of the individual grants. They only have a small team hence the current 6/8 week wait,

I think they will need to employ extra office staff. They rely on the reports from the Referral Agent for assessment criteria.

Its gives a good idea of eligibility and "how much"

I think it's a wonderful effort. I was amazed how quickly the money poured in too.

👏👏 GB News

Me too. I’m sure the appeal will raise much more too leading up to Christmas.

Patrick Christys has just said on GB news that he had now closed his go fund me page and has raised £407000 which includes gift aid. Well done Patrick.

Yes well done indeed. 👏👏

....In 2024, BBC Children in Need raised £39.2 million. Love CIN - well done!

No seriously tho, of course it's a good thing, as long as it goes to individual grants, even if it only helps for one year.

(I don't see helping relatively well-heeled care homes as best use)

People are raising money for charity through Just Give up and down the country, like my DGC charity for seriously disabled children all the time"Heel and Toe"

My reservations are only inasmuch as political virtue signalling gets involved.

I have just googled this.
It's actually not GB News fundraising as such but someone called Patrick Christy

It's he who is fundraising for Friends Of The Elderly.

justgiving.com/page/saveourseniors

He's a presenter at GB News.

Love Patrick- well done!

Their fees aren't cheap. Family member is in one of their homes and the care is good but it costs a fair bit. Unless they are offering some special deals to the poor I don't think there will be many poor people in them.

growstuff Mon 02-Dec-24 19:42:50

Your last sentence was what I was trying to say.

I was also wondering whether any of the money will go into their care homes and what it will pay for.

Wyllow3 Mon 02-Dec-24 19:06:00

We'd need to hear from the charity abut how much allocated to their homes and day centres in areas as listed above,

and how much allocated to one off individual grants. I read on the website

Applications MUST be made by a professional on behalf of an older person in need. We do not accept applications from individual members of the public

So a referring agency would contact the charity. They gave as an example a man in London who had been given a washing machine, they cant do ongoing regular payments.

The current waiting time (probably because of recent publicity? is 6 to 8 weeks).

So Patrick Christy is doing a great job just as he did for MIND last year and some people are going to get one off grants which will help,
but its not a good idea to link to WFA as its not regular ongoing grants to supplement income.

Jolly good. Would have been better given to AgeUK to administer perhaps as they are busy helping people to claim pension credit.

That's what I was thinking, but I'm not knocking it. I was just wondering who will actually benefit.

NotSpaghetti Mon 02-Dec-24 17:41:22

Yes, I'm not knocking the charity or the presenter.
Any money going to help people in need is good in my view.

Thank you that info and I really hope needy pensioners receive the money.

Well done GB, however dubious your motives!

Why should their motives be dubious.
So they don't agree with Labours theft from pensioners, neither do millions of others.
Easy pickings pensioners, aren't they.
Good on GBnews.

My only reservation is that this charity won't actually benefit the pensioners who have lost their WFA directly. It seems the money goes to care homes the charity runs and one-off grants.

The people in care homes aren't necessarily the poorest and I'm not sure that people in care homes received WFA anyway (correct me if I'm wrong).

People requiring grants for broken ovens, etc very possibly receive Pension Credit, so would receive WFA anyway.

I'm not knocking the initiative and I've no doubt it will go to the charity (nothing dodgy), but I think linking it to the loss of WFA is a bit of a stretch.

Cynical me? Of course.

Playing to the audience. Look at us we are the good guys.
Ha!

Sad it seems it is all going to be distributed “down south”. Raising funds for ANY charity is good - even though it sticks in my craw acknowledging anything positive re GB news.

I think they have care homes.

Fleurpepper Mon 02-Dec-24 11:54:42

Ah, the Victorian deserving poor- now a very narrow selection of society. The under message is there for all to see, and it is quite cynical.

But I do hope it will help some, good.

NotSpaghetti Mon 02-Dec-24 11:42:22

Here's it's objectives:

Charitable objects
TO ESTABLISH, ACQUIRE OR TAKE OVER, CONDUCT AND CARRY ON IN THE UNITED KINGDOM OR ELSEWHERE RESIDENTIAL AND NURSING HOMES, AND IN PARTICULAR RESIDENTIAL AND NURSING HOMES FOR THE POOR, NEEDY OR ELDERLY, CONVALESCENT HOMES FOR THE SICK OR INFIRM AND HOLIDAY OR OTHER HOMES FOR PERSONS OF ANY AGE AND EITHER SEX WHO FOR FINANCIAL REASONS OR OTHERWISE ARE IN NEED OF THE CARE AND ASSISTANCE PROVIDED IN SUCH HOMES, WITH POWER, BUT WITHOUT ANY OBLIGATION, TO CHARGE FEES OF SUCH AMOUNT AS THE SOCIETY SHALL IN ANY INDIVIDUAL CASE CONSIDER APPROPRIATE IN RESPECT OF THE ACCOMMODATION IN SUCH HOMES OF ANY PERSON ACCOMMODATED THERE WHO, IN THE OPINION OF THE SOCIETY, CAN REASONABLY BE REQUIRED TO PAY SUCH FEES FOR SUCH ACCOMMODATION. TO RELIEVE POVERTY SUFFERING AND DISTRESS AMONG THE ELDERLY, THE SICK, THE DISABLED OR OTHER GENUINELY NEEDY PERSONS REGARDLESS OF AGE OR SEX IN WHATEVER MANNER THE COMMITTEE OR GOVERNING BODY OF THE SOCIETY MAY DEEM APPROPRIATE. TO GIVE ASSISTANCE IN MONEY OR IN KIND TO THOSE WHO ARE GENUINELY NEEDY.

This is copy and pasted. Sorry it's in blocks.
