GB news viewers raise money..

Great effort, but how are GB News going to distribute this?

How will they decide who is “worthy”.

I know this is a political jibe from GB News resulting from the WFA cuts.

PS It’s not a “negative” it’s a question followed by an observation.

I can't help thinking that there would be more money for pensioners in poverty if the last Conservative govt had managed the economy better, but that would be churlish. I always give a donation to Shelter and Crisis at Christmas instead of sending Christmas cards. I think it's good to think of others in need so I applaud GB news' initiative. Well done.

I don't have a problem (except doubting it can be "fair throughout the country" because of the resources that would be needed to assess would be absolutely massive).

Ah, the Victorian deserving poor- now a very narrow selection of society. The under message is there for all to see, and it is quite cynical.

Sad it seems it is all going to be distributed “down south”. Raising funds for ANY charity is good - even though it sticks in my craw acknowledging anything positive re GB news.

My only reservation is that this charity won't actually benefit the pensioners who have lost their WFA directly. It seems the money goes to care homes the charity runs and one-off grants.

The people in care homes aren't necessarily the poorest and I'm not sure that people in care homes received WFA anyway (correct me if I'm wrong).

People requiring grants for broken ovens, etc very possibly receive Pension Credit, so would receive WFA anyway.

I'm not knocking the initiative and I've no doubt it will go to the charity (nothing dodgy), but I think linking it to the loss of WFA is a bit of a stretch.

Jolly good. Would have been better given to AgeUK to administer perhaps as they are busy helping people to claim pension credit.

Yes, I'm not knocking the charity or the presenter.
Any money going to help people in need is good in my view.

That's what I was thinking, but I'm not knocking it. I was just wondering who will actually benefit.

We'd need to hear from the charity abut how much allocated to their homes and day centres in areas as listed above,

and how much allocated to one off individual grants. I read on the website

Applications MUST be made by a professional on behalf of an older person in need. We do not accept applications from individual members of the public

So a referring agency would contact the charity. They gave as an example a man in London who had been given a washing machine, they cant do ongoing regular payments.

The current waiting time (probably because of recent publicity? is 6 to 8 weeks).

So Patrick Christy is doing a great job just as he did for MIND last year and some people are going to get one off grants which will help,
but its not a good idea to link to WFA as its not regular ongoing grants to supplement income.
