My new MP needs to go back to school!

It was very kind of my MP to send a Christmas card to me, and no doubt all his constituents. Inside was a printed handwritten letter from him.
Since when was Christmas written with a small C? 3 times over, once even at the beginning of a new sentence.
Surely they have secretaries to check what the MP writes?

OP - why does handwriting have a capital h?

Well spotted πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘.
Unlike the OP i didn’t see it as I’m more interested in what people have to say than spotting the heinous crime of a spelling/ grammar mistake.

I'm happy to answer that one. I'm treating Handwriting as a school subject, as per the title of the thread. I'm sure some here might agree with that.

No worries, though, I've acknowledged his card and thanked him for his Christmas wishes. DH has had a few phone calls from him seeking some advice, but he didn't mention any disabilities in his hand, so hopefully all is well there.
I repeat, spelling mistakes are not apparent in his letter.
Thanks for everyone's discussion.

I wouldn't send a letter like that because the handwriting and grammar is poor plus it looks very immature. He or she might be a very nice person but he would be better signing something. Maybe he hasn't a secretary or one not up yo tge job. Makes one wonder who taught him or her. In their favour they did take the trouble and seems approachable.

And another one.
For all you know the man/woman might have a disability in the hand.
For all you know ( and others) he might be dyslexic and has worked very hard to be able to write a letter.
Shame on you.

I think the C in Christmas is intended to be uppercase, but the handwriting is poorly formed and looks uneducated. The flowery phraseology is more appropriate for a message from a woman's magazine Editor ' to our readers in this festive season'.
But apparently personal letters go down wonderfully well with (some of) the electorate.

Well, we never hear from ours. She doesn't post on FB, she may be on X to update what she's doing but I'm not.

I imagine that many new MPs, particularly from the Lib Dems for whom winning a seat is a first - and somewhat unexpected - are still setting up their offices. In an area local to me we have a new Lib Dem MP but the seat has previously been LD and the new girl was a local councillor for several years so she already had an office set up - albeit there are now paid staff as well as the previous volunteers. Since the election she has been dealing with hundreds of queries from constituents every week, so her priority has been to them. Even so, the usual Christmas Cards are going out - but from tomorrow cos people get annoyed if they go out too early.

My own MP is a totally new Labour chap and hasn't sent a sausage to anyone yet but has just managed to get his Facebook page active. I've alerted him to one issue in the constituency and got a reply to say he is very busy but will look into it after Christmas. I understand. For now.

So please consider the logistics of these new MPs needing a bit of time to get organised - my new MP hasn't yet found a place to rent an office.

Interesting observations.
I think this thread should probably move to Pedants' Corner as I'm being fussy!

Here's the letter sizes used at KS1 and KS2 where the capital letter is clearly taller than any of the lower case letters. Even b, d, k, h, l aren't as tall.
It's not a big deal, however, although it did grate with me on the paper.

I'd better let him off though, as I discovered that he actually went to the same university as I did!

Is it a him? It looks to me like a very feminine hand.

Not that it matters.

Where’s mine? Dan Norris too busy being Weca Mayor as well as MP.

I expect mine from Kemi Badenoch is in the post (ahem!)

Surely the important thing is an attempt to contact the constituents in a fairly informal, more personalised way. Well done that busy mp

πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Absolutely.
The post says more about the OP than it does about her/his MP.

Good grief!

I agree with you (for once) petra. tchgrin

Have a good Christmas! (and no bah humbugs from me!)

@ Allira as his Handwriting slopes slightly to the right (not necessarily political leaning, you understand!), it means he is forward looking and positive!

Allira Mon 09-Dec-24 19:56:33

It would be interesting to know what a graphologist would make of the handwriting 😁

We hear nothing from our new (Labour) MP at all, she seems to have disappeared into a black hole.
Can't even remember her name now.

HeavenLeigh Mon 09-Dec-24 19:54:03

Blimey! If I got that the last thing I’d be concerned about it capital letters, lovely to receive it.

Why is there a huge gap between here and with much family?

Was the name of the town supposed to be there.

I haven’t heard a peep from our new MP so at least yours has made an effort.

I said in my intro, it was very kind of him to send cards all round. The message was also a good reminder of what his main challenges are.
I haven't ripped his spelling apart, it looks faultless.
In terms of his Handwriting, however, (and Grammar as pointed out by someone else), I said earlier I've asked GNHQ to move the thread to Pedants' Corner.
Happy Christmas to you too, petra. πŸŽ„ πŸ₯‚

Think I am with Iam and Petra here.

Still awaiting a card from any MP.

^Also, I think the statement should be β€˜My team and I’^
..... except when the preposition "from" is placed in front, when the statement should read " from my team and me," not from my team and I, (which we hear often).

Give it a break. The man has taken the trouble to write a personal Christmas message and all you can do is rip his grammar and spelling apart.
