Chauvinist of the Year
Idiot of the Year
Inciter to violence in government of the year

Have many many more , but much of my thoughts would not be acceptable. It is bad enough to see such a selfcentred person being voted in, but what does it say about the people who voted for him?!!!!

I'm not sure The Times Person Of The Year is actually chosen for his or her worthiness - it's more to do with who might have made the biggest impact, newswise.

If that is the case, much as I dislike the man and what he stands for, I can see why they have chosen Trump.

I think the choice is meant to be sort of objective rather than ideological.

There may be many people who don't like Trump - including The Times own editorial staff among them, but he has certainly been influential - hence the choice.

Quite 'balanced' and democratic really, if you think about it - they won't base the choice on whether they like or dislike the individual.

Shame they don't think in terms of "people who've made a difference for the good". Thunberg was on, one year, so its not just USA figures or it wasn't then.

He was The Times POTY in '21 - and was in fact on the short-list again this year.

As for Trump being nominated a second time, I believe every single American president has been nominated at least once - apart from Gerald Ford.

Among this year's short list were:
Kamala Harris
Kate Middleton (as some still refer to her)
Mark Zuckerberg
Benjamin Netanyahu
... and Musk again

The Times has a "morally neutral" criteria for selection. They choose the 'most influential person' - for good or bad... which would explain why these two were also selected back in the 30s when the 'award' was Man Of The Year.

Time Personality of the Year isn't necessarily a good thing. It's awarded to the person who has had the most influence on the year, for better or worse. Hitler and Stalin have both received awards. It's also traditional, with a few exceptions, for the American president to receive the award. The whole idea is a lot of nonsense anyway.

For goodness sake: the Time magazine, a highly improbable arbiter of virtue. Best ignore

Hi ha!!! well said Madeleine! I was astonished that he got in & think America will regret that. I think it's strange but true that some people have got magnetic personalities yet are crap rulers like Boris.
Whatever charisma they have I wish we could bottle it and give some to Keir Starmer who seems a perfectly diligent PM but is as dull as ditchwater!
They have some great people in the party though who do have more charisma, Darren Jones, Chris Bryant & more

A sort of plutocracy/dictatorship in the making Camry, looking at the line up of appointees - I just hope for you and others that when it comes to certain measures he will meet obstacles from his own Senate as well as States who oppose him and that he can't seize total control of the judiciary. Healthcare is crucial for his poorer voters and I doubt he will make things better as he's hand in glove with the big insurance firms.

The USA and the rest of the world better BUCKLE UP !!

Any man or woman who does not abuse their children, and separates parents from their children, migrants or not, is cruel

They are busy building outsourced detention centres !

We may not wish to be overloaded with migrants (non criminal) however, they do not deserve to be treated like rats or mice ..
