He’s just rung the bell on the NY Stock Exchange (considered an honour) to begin the day’s trading!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 12-Dec-24 15:03:19

I wanted it to be Gizelle Piquot (sp)

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 12-Dec-24 16:41:33

Oh yes GG13. A good choice.

I very much doubt Gisele Pelicot would be flattered to be considered by Time magazine, if the best they can come up with is Trump and for the second time! This lady has had enough of pathetic men.

MiniMoon Thu 12-Dec-24 17:11:37

I don't understand!! Of all the deserving people in the world, why choose Trump, a convicted felon?
Can anyone tell me why America is in thrall to this chump!

J52 Thu 12-Dec-24 17:58:34

Money talks!

MayBee70 Thu 12-Dec-24 18:00:20

Can anyone explain to me what he has actually DONE to deserve this?

sassenach512 Thu 12-Dec-24 18:05:08

Unbelievable shock as if he needs an extra ego boost. I can only say thank God it wasn't Elon Musk

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 12-Dec-24 18:14:59

Good grief.
Although to be fair, he is a personality- just not a personality I would have chosen.

According to TIME
For marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2024 Person of the Year

I think it’s just Person of the Year, not Personality. It’s basically the person who has been most talked about, not done the most interesting things.

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 12-Dec-24 18:28:03

Oh well - I suppose he is a person.

crazyH Thu 12-Dec-24 18:37:54

Love him or hate him, he is a Personality !

pascal30 Thu 12-Dec-24 22:22:18

He's certainly resilient.. he seemed to take up more space than anyone else at Notre Dame? a very dangerous, powerful, dominant and yet charismatic man.. you can't ignore him which is probably why he was given the award..

The European has named her personality of 2024.

madeleine45 Thu 12-Dec-24 22:45:02

I have several titles I would award him but not that. Where shall I begin?

Moron of the Year
Chauvinist of the Year
Idiot of the Year
Inciter to violence in government of the year

Have many many more , but much of my thoughts would not be acceptable. It is bad enough to see such a selfcentred person being voted in, but what does it say about the people who voted for him?!!!!

I'd say there is no actual value judgment in the TIME explanatory of "what he has done to deserve this".

Yes, he has marshalled a comeback of historic proportions - he has gone from ignominy to President, which will be recorded in history. Fact, neither praise nor blame.

He has driven a once-in-a-generation political realignment - yes, the country (or about half of it) is realigned to his way of thinking. They don't state whether that is good or bad. Fact, neither praise nor blame.

He has reshaped the American presidency - yes, there has never been a president quite like him. Future presidents may (or may not) refer to him as a president for their own role. Fact, neither praise nor blame.

He has altered America’s role in the world - yes, but they don't specify what shape that role is, or what effect it will have on the world, for good or for ill. Fact, neither praise nor blame.

If you asked for the name that was on everyone's lips in 2023/2024, his would be the most likely answer. Like him or loathe him, he is the Man Of The Moment. They could not ignore him.

I wonder who they will choose next?

BlueBelle Thu 12-Dec-24 23:33:04

Can I add ….
misogynist of the year
Liar of the year
Slippery eel of the year
Earhole or even Axxxxole of the year

Who will they choose next ….oh maybe Putin

Wyllow3 Fri 13-Dec-24 13:04:26

I think it's Time Magazine brown-nosing on the one hand and probably enjoying current controversy about its choice as it will raise sales.
But if you look at the history of it its pretty broad (names and pictures here include Thunberg and Merkel)

It's no more ridiculous than Obama being given the Nobel Peace Prize.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 13-Dec-24 21:51:17

🤣

Wyllow3 Sat 14-Dec-24 15:15:39

Obama - one of the good guys 👏👏👏........probably not the Nobel prize but the last decent POTUS. Intelligent and caring.
