When news of this case first broke, I was very surprised that his lawyer was a woman.

She's said that her role was not to try and excuse him, but to explain his actions. She went on to describe some childhood trauma that led to him behaving in such a perverted fashion.

To me, that doesn't explain his behaviour at all.

For anyone interested, this is one of the articles about her.

I'd be interested to hear others view of her role in this.

Before I worked with solicitors and barristers, I struggled to accept they were simply representing their clients, that didn’t mean they agreed with them.
The emotional detachment alongside the ability to forensically absorb and analyse huge amounts of information is essential.

Obviously the lawyer defending Dominique Pelicot would have had access to the videos and supporting evidence against her client, am sure that this would make me want to walk away in revulsion but she must see it as just another day at the office, is surely the only way she could go through with it

Men accused of sexual assault often choose a female barrister as they think that there is a subliminal message to the jury- this " nice lady" believes me, so ....
I have barristers I my family who can confirm this.

Yes, I have come across this before as well. It seems a deliberate ploy in quite a few cases involving abuses of women.

I agree that men accused of horrific crimes against women often have a female barrister for the reason you give

Babs03 - it’s wise not to assume that necessary emotional detachment at work doesn’t mean going home exhausted and upset. Police, doctors, social workers, like the legal profession have to function well in some dreadful situations. Emoting all I’ve the place wouldn’t help anyone

As already stated, there's a special place in hell for him.
