It is being reported on most news outlets online and mainstream breakfast news programmes that Lord Mandelson is to begin his new job of U.K. Ambassador in the new year.

Old images of him with Jeffrey Epstein are all over social media sites, coincidence…

Agree Iam: and I think he is right for the position,

After the derogatory remarks he’s made about Trump in the past I don’t think his appointment will work. He’s already being described by Trump’s aides as a moron. Presumably along with Lammy.

Galaxy Sat 21-Dec-24 18:42:53

Trump is politically clever. In the same way as at times Johnson was/is.

Mollygo Sat 21-Dec-24 19:50:26

I think he’s a good choice to send. Manipulative-so he’ll recognise when he’s being manipulated.
Chequered past so Trump won’t feel he’s been given someone who can look down on his own misdemeanours.

Oreo, sorry you don’t get the job. You weren’t being appointed to play nice but to co- work with the Prince of Darkness. Anyway he’s been touch and doesn’t want a job share.
I understand that Oreo has been appointed as his Special Adviser.

Iam64 Sat 21-Dec-24 20:01:17

That’s good Allira, do you think she will take the job. WFH might help

She's packed a suitcaseful of choccy biscuits already.

Oreo keep posting - we need updates!

I’m doing it for GN, sisters doing it for themselves doncha know😄
Am now officially a SPAD 😊 he may not need a job share but will def need an advisor.First thing I’ll tell him is to stop smiling evilly, its scary, secondly to stop looking like he just stepped outta Savile Row, a missing button or two, scuffed shoes and ruffled hair will make him look more like Joe Public.
It worked for Boris.

Boris Johnson once publicly accused Donald Trump of stupefying ignorance - it didn't prevent them from becoming 'friends'.

If Mandelson fails, it's unlikely to be because of his criticism of DT, or the co-campaign manager who called Mandelson a "moron", more likely it will be his 'take' on China, the EU and globalisation.

Former Trump aides and chiefs-of-staff (2018) have called Trump an "idiot", a "dope", and a "moron"... I think these epithets get bounced around political circles in America in a way that we are not used to in the UK - our politicos do it more behind closed doors.

Maybe they're just exercising their First Amendment rights to Free Speech!? hmm

... keep us (1) updated then Oreo, and (2) Mandelson in his place. Go girl!

Did he serve time in prison?

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 22-Dec-24 11:17:34

IMO Mandy is the perfect choice. He is devious and very clever (which trump isn’t) and will do a good job. Mandy and Ronaldo will bring a certain something to the Washington residence.

Many senior politicians (across the world) have lambasted trump over the years, and with good reason.

The most important diplomatic role for the UK is with NATO not the US. Peter Mandelson looks nothing like Bill Gates. At the moment the UK should stay well away from the US.

grannygranby Sun 22-Dec-24 12:22:19

I think it is a good posting. He is experienced.confident and did a brilliant job in northern ireland.

Castafiore Sun 22-Dec-24 12:52:11

Mandelson has never shown the brilliant political judgement he’s credited with. He did lead the 1997 election campaign, but Labour were so far ahead that they would have won anyway. He’s infatuated with rich people, and has always been in favour of disastrous policies like privatising public services. We all know what happens when these are run for shareholder profit.

Annma Sun 22-Dec-24 13:16:42

He may not be perfect -who is?But one thing he has in abundance is guile. He is a wily old fox and will be more than capable of putting our country’s needs first. He is more experienced than the awful Trump and Musk show.He will be a safe ,experienced pair of hands who will be ready to deal with the Orange One’s machinations.

Jockytaff Sun 22-Dec-24 13:49:05

Grantanow - he has 2 things in his favour : he is a snake & he has the skin of a rhino.

Wyllow3 Sun 22-Dec-24 13:55:24

I agree.

He's clearly a "marmite" figure looking at all the posts above but what matters is the need for a wily old fox in the camp.

The New York Times concentrates on his experience in trade relationships on the tariff question which could be the issue facing us most, alongside membership of Nato and all the security implications.

(And also his controversial history with Trump)

Wyllow3 Sun 22-Dec-24 13:56:21

I was agreeing with Annma

My first thought was "Come back Spitting Image" "Oh where are you now wonderful puppets ,? who could in a few minutes with few words just show what we think of the lot of them!! Remember Dennis Healey and the eyebrows, Douglas Hurd with the ice cream hair. . Personally I have a dream. I would like to invite Donald Trump, Putin, Assad and add to them Boris Johnson, and a few more unsavoury political characters. I will have the meeting at Ripon.,North Yorkshire, then get them all together and take them the nearest I can find to a sink hole., as there are several around there. What a great thing it would be if the hole opened up in the earth and swallowed them all!! If not I will have a word with the seismic lot who might tell me where there would be an earthquake, and the quickest way to get them there. When my son was choosing what he wanted to do for a job, I said so long as he did no harm to others and tried his best I would support him totally. The only thing he could do that would make me feel I had totally failed as a mother, would be to become a politician!!!

Casdon Sun 22-Dec-24 19:48:34

What I’m really interested to hear is who people who think Mandelson is a bad choice, think would have made a better choice for this role. By the nature of the role,, an ambassador can’t be a serving politician. Any ideas?

Any amongst our present experienced diplomats?
