It is being reported on most news outlets online and mainstream breakfast news programmes that Lord Mandelson is to begin his new job of U.K. Ambassador in the new year.

Old images of him with Jeffrey Epstein are all over social media sites, coincidence…

I don’t know, they are normally quite under the radar, aren’t they?

Allira Sun 22-Dec-24 20:18:10

Yes.

The only one I can remember is Peter Jay and that was because of the accusations of nepotism

Wyllow3 Sun 22-Dec-24 20:57:03

Harriet Harman.
but I doubt she'd ever want to do it.

It’s not up to Gransnetters to suggest who should be ambassador for Britain in America Casdon. We are just grandparents and that is not up to us. It’s up to the politicians and if members of the public think Mandelson is a poor choice, that is up to them. To be honest, I would have thought that the ambassador to the USA should be someone who is squeaky clean and Mandelson is certainly not that, and for that reason alone, I would say he’s grossly unsuitable, but our political masters have decided in their wisdom that being being squeaky clean is not necessary and have appointed him and therefore sadly, we must live with it.
Having such a dishonest man, however clever, in this role, reflects badly on the UK in my opinion, but Starmer et al don’t care what I think. They clearly think he’s a smooth operator and therefore suitable. Nothing to do with me!

I think the not squeaky clean and the manipulative attributes are some of the reasons why he was chosen.
If he fails, they can be used as a reason for his failure.
If he is successful, then that says a lot about what the current government sees as good in their MPs
The same faults attributed to MPs in the previous government were condemned.

Plus ça change plus ça reste la même chose.

I don't see any harm in GN's suggesting who they'd like to see?

petal53 Mon 23-Dec-24 10:09:40

Neither do I Wyllow, in the full and certain knowledge that it’s complicated irrelevant who Gransnetters would like to see in the role.

petal53 Mon 23-Dec-24 10:10:07

Sorry

completely irrelevant

Looks like Mandy is going to cosy up with Farage.

I'm not sure why we chose someone that has been heard to insult the next president and has also had some controversies in his past political career (can't remember what they were but he had to be removed from a position twice). I am sure there are loads of blank slate people that have the necessary skills to be an ambassador.

petal53 Mon 23-Dec-24 10:13:01

Mandy and Farage?
Wow, who’d a thunk it?

My point exactly ReadyMeals.
I’m rather surprised by the amount of positive comment on here for a known slimy, cheater.
Absolutely not the right person in my humble opinion, but who cares what I think?
I know he’s clever though, a clever, devious manipulator.
He might be able to manipulate Trump, but Musk is another matter, and it’s said on here that Musk is pulling Trump’s strings. Who knows? I don’t!

Anniebach Mon 23-Dec-24 10:58:02

I am surprised that some choose to call Peter Mandelson ‘Mandy’, he was outed years ago by the Tory press calling him
Mandy

RosiesMaw2 Mon 23-Dec-24 13:02:02

Could I just be picky and point out that he is not Lord Peter Mandelson- that title is reserved for the son of a Marquess or a Duke.
He is more correctly referred to as Lord Mandelson - his courtesy mode of address as Life Peer Baron Mandelson , or in common with many life peers he can be referred to simply by his name - Peter Mandelson

Understanding where people are coming from when they object to a choice and asking who they would prefer is not irrelevant petal53, unless you want all discussion at a superficial level.

Galaxy Mon 23-Dec-24 17:29:02

Anyone not associated with Epstein would be my choice. Presumably there is someone who meets that criteria.

I think that you can be as picky as you like, RM, but I doubt if many people will take note of the correct to refer to Mandelson.

MaizieD Mon 23-Dec-24 17:39:42

The correct way dammit...

Casdon

I was correcting a typo!

Although on reflection, whatever any of us think or say on here is completely irrelevant! Nobody gives a toss what a group of grannies say or think!
