So sad reading of this evenings terror attack in Germany.
A simple pleasure walking around a Christmas market will probably become a thing of the past.

I have been to a Christmas market in Strasbourg, I was so nervous as the Police presence was high, they were searching bags, we were all being funnelled into the old town.

I knew if there was an incident it would be carnage.

I told my husband I was unhappy and had a sixth sense that something would happen.
We left the town centre and walked around the parks.
My husband was patient but thought I was being a drama queen!

The following day there was a terrorist attack.

In hindsight the powers that knew there was a high risk.

I pray that all those injured survive.

The latest news is that although the terrorist was a Saudi-Arabian doctor, his social media shows that he had published many anti Islamist tracts on it over the years.

There does seem to be an encroaching sensitivity or in stronger terms censorship surrounding certain subjects these days, in the way that threads are removed This is the main news story that only broke yesterday evening and of course it will inevitably be a subject for discussion because of its horrific nature. I haven't seen the thread on MN and can't therefore comment on the tone of it,or how the comments were couched, but deemed "to have run its course" how bizarre!

petal53 Sat 21-Dec-24 14:04:25

Why would it be taken down do you suppose?

petal53 Sat 21-Dec-24 14:03:12

Its been taken down on Mumsnet

Well fancy that!

petal53 Sat 21-Dec-24 14:02:13

Whatever his motives, he certainly caused terror for those poor souls at the market, and he used one of the terrorist’s weapons, a car, and their modus operandi, driving through a big crowd. Therefore it’s terror, but what the charge will be I don’t know.
Whatever, this is happening far too often now. And I have no idea idea how these attacks will ever be stopped. Are they with us forever now?

Mt61 Sat 21-Dec-24 14:01:01

Sorry that was meant for you wyllow3

Mt61 Sat 21-Dec-24 13:59:52

It’s been taken down on mums net- they say it’s run its course! Crickey! It only happened last night.
5 dead now, including young child 😩

Mt61 Sat 21-Dec-24 13:57:30

It’s very, very strange indeed. It will all come out in the wash.
It’s a terrible state of affairs when you can’t mooch round Christmas markets: fun fairs without the fear of some nutter running you over, or throwing acid around 😩

Homestead62 Sat 21-Dec-24 12:44:21

Oreo, I did not know about that tragedy at the other Christmas market. That's so sad.

I saw the footage of the guy driving through the crowd, the speed that guy was going at! It was deliberate act to kill & do as much damage as possible.
Is it on the bbc as a terrorist attack? I bet not.

He isn't appearing as a "terrorist" in all the major outlets M61!

I mean, of course it was an appalling act of terror but he certainly has a very peculiar background, this report from CNN summarises his bizarre mix of views which are related in most reports.

"The Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt state, Reiner Haseloff, says the suspect is a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia who works in the state and has lived in Germany since 2006.

He’s yet to be formally identified, but German media have named him as Taleb A, withholding his full name in line with privacy laws.

He has been arrested and is thought to have acted alone. The suspect lives in Bernburg, about 25 miles south of Magdeburg.

He reportedly worked to help Saudis, particularly women, flee his home country.

In a now deleted X feed apparently belonging to the suspect, he made anti-Islam posts, expressed sympathy for the far-right AfD party and even accused Germany of promoting the Islamization of the country.

German authorities are yet to ascribe any motive to the suspect."

On top of all my anger, feel Germany is a second home, I feel so sad for the families and all who were caught up in this violent attack on innocents just out for an evening of fun.

Mine too Freya...lived in Germany for 11 years.. visited many Christmas markets in Cologne, Mannheim, Ludwigsburg, Heidelberg, Bavaria and Munich..all pretty and festive.
Was shocked to hear of this awful tragedy and feel for the families and the German people😢

Wasn't Assad a doctor?, an eye doctor I think, before he assumed power in Syria?

I think I read this guy's a psychiatrist which is of course a doctor, but his speciality is of the mind, and he's done this shock

Yes Assad is a doctor, trained as an ophthalmologist in London.

It’s reported that the suspect is a doctor.
How strange for a doctor to do this.

Dr Crippen 😱

Shipman. More recently Kwan

The Glasgow Airport terrorists were doctors.

Yes, that came to my mind too.

Not all doctors are saints. Several leaders in terrorist groups have been doctors as were some of the Nazi hierarchy.

Yes, yes, and yes I know many doctors have committed evil acts.
My rhetorical questioning was, I personally don't understand how it even crosses their minds. But we know full well that dreadful deeds occur
in all caring professions.

A doctor?
Aren't doctors meant to preserve life, not murder people?

Yes, they are meant to but they do not always, sadly.

The people who carried out the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport years ago , were doctors in our local hospital. 🤬

Primrose53 Sat 21-Dec-24 09:09:47

The Glasgow Airport terrorists were doctors.

You’re right, I had forgotten that. A local surgeon’s daughter who was also a medical student disappeared off to Syria around the same time those 3 girls (including Shamima Begum) ran away. There have been no updates about her and that was several years ago.

It just shows how devious and sinister they are to fool friends, parents, relatives and school teachers.

Apologies.

No problem.

I'm so sorry this happened, I'd just seen it on the news. Our Christmas market local to us is so overcrowded, it is no longer a pleasure to go. You cannot wander around at leisure. Personally I think it should be a ticketed event now as there are just too many people. I believe last year they had to close the gates on ours till some of the crowd exited. Then they let others in. Apart from the possibility of what happened in Germany happening here, what about possible crushing? I feel it's not a pleasure now. Condolences to the German people.

You’re right about the possibility of crushing, many died just the other day at a Christmas market, maybe in Nigeria.

Oreo Sat 21-Dec-24 08:34:30

Nobody should think that a doctor or medical student wouldn’t have anything to do with terrorism as we know better by now.

Believe one of the Manchester airport attackers was also a "doctor". Misguided fanatics who have no place in any society. Certainly not ours.

Apologies, Glasgow.
