So sad reading of this evenings terror attack in Germany.
A simple pleasure walking around a Christmas market will probably become a thing of the past.

I have been to a Christmas market in Strasbourg, I was so nervous as the Police presence was high, they were searching bags, we were all being funnelled into the old town.

I knew if there was an incident it would be carnage.

I told my husband I was unhappy and had a sixth sense that something would happen.
We left the town centre and walked around the parks.
My husband was patient but thought I was being a drama queen!

The following day there was a terrorist attack.

In hindsight the powers that knew there was a high risk.

I pray that all those injured survive.

I think at Christmas these pedestrianised areas ought to be made safer with security bollards to prevent vehicular access. Sad, but better safe than sorry.
My heart goes out to families who have been affected by this tragedy.

Where has it been reported it’s terrorist related ?
Everything I ve read so far is calling it a purposeful attack but I haven’t seen where it’s a suspected terrorist attack
I m not saying it isn’t just that I haven’t read it is

The car drove 400m into crowd.
The car was driven “at least 400 meters across the Christmas market” into the crowd, a police spokesman told German media.

That’s some distance when you think about it.
Caused utter carnage.

The Telegraph for one Bluebelle:

“LIVE Two dead, almost 70 injured in German Christmas market terror attack”

Jaxjacky Fri 20-Dec-24 21:18:54

50 year old doctor reported as the suspect, I agree BlueBelle no mention of terrorism thus far.

This is just awful, those poor people...

Scholz: ‘Something terrible is to come’
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned that “something terrible is to come”.

“The reports from Magdeburg suggest something terrible is to come. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours,” he said in a statement.

German party leaders react:
Friedrich Merz, CDU leader and candidate for chancellor, has responded to the events, saying: “This is very depressing news from Magdeburg.”

He added on X: “My thoughts are with the victims and their families. I thank all emergency services who are caring for the injured on site.”

Alice Weidel, leader of the hard-Right AfD party, also wrote: “The images from Magdeburg are shocking! My thoughts are with the bereaved and injured. When will this madness end?”

‘Warlike conditions’
A man, who watched the car speed by as he worked on a burger stand inside the market, told German newspaper Mitteldeutsche Zeitung that the scene had turned into “war-like conditions”.

Another eyewitness said lots of families had been in the “fairy tale area” of the market when the car slammed through the barriers. She said she just managed to jump out of its way with her child.

Aren't doctors meant to preserve life, not murder people?

Suspect was ‘from Saudi Arabia’
The suspect driving the dark BMW was reportedly a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia, according to the Die Welt newspaper.

Pictures, shared on social media, appeared to show the arrested suspect with his head on the pavement surrounded by armed police.

Former Head of CounterTerrorism on TV says he fears copy cat attacks.

If you suspect anything report urgently.

The driver is Saudi Arabian not Syrian. 50 years old.

My friend has booked Xmas in Germany on a coach tour and is visiting a Xmas market. She goes on Sunday. Wonder whether it will be cancelled.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 20-Dec-24 21:26:54

I said Saudi.

DS had to travel to Saudi Arabia to work last week. He had to provide extra information regarding his parents for security clearance.
I'm surprised the UK level hasn't been raised over the Christmas period.
It's unsettling.
I hate these kind of tragedies.

I said Saudi.

I didn’t mean you, I was correcting myself.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 20-Dec-24 21:33:48

Apologies.

Sago Fri 20-Dec-24 21:35:06

The current UK threat level is substantial.

I certainly wouldn’t be wanting to go to a a large shopping centre or concert right now.

Yes, they are meant to but they do not always, sadly.

Visgir1 Fri 20-Dec-24 21:50:34

I was in Berlin visiting the markets just 3 weeks ago.
There are so many people, it's claustrophobic at times. The car apprently drove 400mts through it, I can imagine the devastating affect, my heart goes out to these poor people.

The suspect, who is from Saudi Arabia, "was working as a doctor in the state" and "arrived in Germany in 2006

German police suspect an explosive device in the vehicle, the German public broadcaster MDR reports, citing the police.
It is unclear if the police suspect the device still to be in situ.

petal53 Fri 20-Dec-24 22:56:09

It’s reported that the suspect is a doctor.
How strange for a doctor to do this.

Assad!!

The Glasgow Airport terrorists were doctors.

Sarnia Fri 20-Dec-24 23:49:08

A Saudi doctor in his 50's who has lived in Germany for around 20 years. What gets into their minds to do something like this to other people? This incident will add fuel to the fire concerning immigration.
