In Central London I agree. But... It made absolutely no sense at all to implement ULEZ in the outer London boroughs. The majority of people were against it but Khan took no notice and implemented it anyway. It makes barely any difference to the air quality at all and so many people lost their livelihoods like my neighbour who is a plumber but couldn't afford to pay £12.50 a day if he wanted to work at a property down the road in leafy Coulsdon, so he sold his van and retired. One more skilled person lost!

I dint think Khan should be knighted, he was doing his job. He is paid to do the best he can.

Yes, thank you, this is more interesting than I had realised. My understanding is that Boris Johnson, as Mayor, announced the creation of ULEZ in July 2014, and this was confirmed in March 2015 after consultation. It was backed by the then PM, David Cameron who also agreed to provide funding to help in its implementation. ULEZ was then implemented across central London on 8 April 2019, by which time Sadiq Khan was Mayor. I don't understand therefore why Sadiq Khan is criticised for implementing ULEZ when it was Boris Johnson's idea originally, but as someone who lives in central London I am appreciative to both Mayors for supporting ULEZ.

Johnson spent lots of money on his mistress, water canons and a garden bridge. He also shut lots of police and fire stations despite promising not to. People have short memories.

The brother of a friend of mine got an OBE a few years ago for services to disabled housing. A lot of the honours are for people like him, quietly improving people’s lives. Not household names.

Do you remember when people returned their honours because the Beatles were awarded the MBE? I wonder what they made of Paul McCartney’s knighthood. But it was probably for charitable work, not for his somewhat doubtful contribution to music.

It’s a purely political appointment in Khan’s case, and he was only voted in as the choices weren’t all that great.

Perhaps there will have to be more stringent measures to cut the total number of vehicles on the road and no doubt the Daily Mail will be up in arms about that as a war on motorists or some such

Maybe our cities should follow the French example in all their major cities where all vehicles entering the city zones have to have a emmisions sticker (Crit'Air) on their windscreens. The stickers are marked from 1 to 5 dependant on the emmissions and most of the cities have banned group 4 and 5 stickered vehicles from entry. We ensured we had the sticker when we last went to France. Very heavy fine if you do not have one or enter the zones without the correct one. Cost is around 5 Euros and lasts for the lifetime of the vehicle and can be bought before leaving the UK.

Sadiq khan is one of those politicians who says everything to everyone and pleases no one. On Gaza he has made speeches that a mainly anti Zionist pro peace audience will want to hear. But he hasn't attended any of the peace marches.
He will talk nicely to muslims about Eid, but will happily lead the LGBT++xyz so called pride demonstrations. An event where hardly any muslims (or other religions) participate, but then many straight people don't either.
To the Jewish communities he says what they (rightly) want to hear. To the green lobby it's all about air quality, yet the infrastructure for cheap solar, charging stations doesn't exist. air qual is only 50.
Most of the communities described understand the cynicism and possibly go along with voting for him. Only 17% voted for him, 40% t/out.
Most of the ethnic and centre left politicians change their views once in power. Lamy Starmer et al are testament to that e.g. on taxes, subtleties around raising funds etc.

Pinch nose time. This is where the right-winged politicians globally have not changed there views. Hence the success of populism Brexit, Trump, Le pen and Orban. The right prey on perceived issues. But not only the that establishment has failed many people and Sadiq is very pro-establishment hence the gong.

Doesn't alter the fact that if you can afford it Khan, amongst others, is currently perfectly happy for you to pollute or add to congestion. Money buys privilege every time, and Khan is no different. The more stringent measures if any will probably be more of the same, increase the charge if you want to pollute or add to congestion. Perhaps he'd like to address the inequality of public transport provision between North London and some parts of South London where it's pretty dire. 250 tube stations north of the river 33 south of the river for a start.
