Sir Sadiq Khan! For services to what, exactly?

The New Year's Honour's List has Sadiq Khan being given a knighthood. I am sure that will sit well with the families of children killed as a result of London knife crime, spiralling on his watch.
Stephen Fry and Gareth Southgate also receive knighthoods.
There are some awards for the Post Office campaigners too and these are the people I like to see recognised although I wouldn't be upset to see the Honour's Lists being abolished altogether.

And, where is Sir Kevin Sinfield?

Georgesgran Tue 31-Dec-24 07:39:02

Yes, kitty, I’ve just read the list, looking for him.

I was sure Kevin Sinfield would be knighted given the superhuman efforts he has gone to in supporting people with MND but maybe I’m biased being in Yorkshire! He is such a fantastic role model showing how to be a good friend and he has consistently put others before himself. He is exactly the kind of person we should be rewarding in my view.

Bridie22 Tue 31-Dec-24 07:49:30

I too am astounded that Sadiq Khan received a knighthood!

grumppa Tue 31-Dec-24 08:15:11

Kevin Sinfield only got his CBE last January. Give the gong-granters a chance!

Casdon Tue 31-Dec-24 08:28:31

As he was voted in by a large majority for an unprecedented third term only last year Sarnia I’d hazard a guess that most Londoners don’t agree with you.
The thing with honours is that none of us will agree with all of them - particularly political figures. I can name many I wouldn’t pay in washers.

Jeanathome Tue 31-Dec-24 08:43:37

It's all an utter nonsense. Thousands of people quietly go about making a difference day in, day out.

I think he deserved the recognition, but my respect goes to those who sent it back. Outdated and anachronistic in this day and age.

theworriedwell Tue 31-Dec-24 09:51:12

Hopefully no more children are dying because of pollution in London so that is good news. Children at primary school aren't going hungry as he found the money to feed them all, more good news. Well done Sadiq.

I think children getting killed as a result of knife crime has more to do with Tory cuts to policing than it has to do with the Mayor.

I made enquiries via my MP about an honour for someone I know of, who has worked virtually full-time and tirelessly - unpaid - for several years for a charitable concern she started. It does not involve any money changing hands, except very small amounts for P&P from the recipients of the items, whose creation and distribution she organises. And there is a huge demand for these.

The enquiry apparently had to be forwarded to that person’s MP - who replied very shortly that they could take it no further, since there were no trustees to be checked on.

Well, of course there weren’t - as I had stated very clearly, there were no standard ‘charity funds’ to be checked on!

TBH I was disgusted - IMO the MP just could not be bothered and was using a plausible-sounding excuse.

And this while, as usual, already well paid people receive awards merely for doing their jobs.

Oldbat1 Tue 31-Dec-24 10:20:32

I honestly dont see the point of them. Many folk do equally good things and never would be awarded. My bil was given such an award - still trying to work out why. He feathers his own nest repeatedly and family do not even receive a christmas card. Pointless.

Here he is on Desert Island Discs. A lovely listen 🙂

I think the whole New Years Honours thing is a joke that needs to be axed.
Not least cos I’ve been passed over for it yet again 😁

eazybee Tue 31-Dec-24 13:51:46

I never understood why Keir Starmer was knighted.

We know a couple of people who got the BEM and MBE for outstanding courage.
Another person who worked tirelessly for charity in her spare time was nominated more than once but nothing.

Then others get knighthood for singing songs.

It's all become quite ridiculous.

I'm not a fan of the honours system in general - but if anyone is truly deserving, then it's Kevin Sinfield. If the system is to continue, I'd like to see it being totally overhauled and awards only given to ordinary people who have really gone over and above and absolutely deserve recognition.

Perhaps you missed grumppa's post, MissInterpreted

Perhaps in the King's Birthday Honours?

No, I knew he'd been made a CBE, but my post followed on from someone saying he should have been knighted. I should have made that clearer.

Bea65 Tue 31-Dec-24 14:18:18

Has anyone gone thru the HONOURS LIST… my finger got
tired scrolling and scrolling-do we need them all?

Ziggy62 Tue 31-Dec-24 14:31:59

I've never understood it

Wyllow3 Tue 31-Dec-24 14:57:27

Yes I did go through it, hundreds of people on the community trip awards. I don't know really what I feel about them as a whole!
As things stand however I support Khan's award. I think he's done a good enough job in one of the most difficult in the country.

CoolCoco Tue 31-Dec-24 15:04:43

I suport Khan and I voted for him. He's done a good job. As for blaming him for knife crime - knife crime is higher in Birmingham and other cities- is he to blame for that too? Or maybe years of austerity cutting police, youth services, sure Start etc?
