Democracy under threat

Good to see Europe’s saner leaders and ministers uniting against the current baiting from across the pond. We can never underestimate the risk that we could lose our democracy and hard won freedoms. We came close in 1944, and the thought of my children losing the protections we have leaves me cold. From the Guardian earlier: “ A German government spokesperson did mention Musk by name, insisting his influence on voters was limited. “Normal people, sensible people, decent people are in a big majority in this country,” the spokesperson told a regular press conference in Berlin.

“We act as if Mr Musk’s Twitter statements could influence a country of 84 million people with untruths or half-truths or expressions of opinion,” the spokesperson added. “This is simply not the case.” Nevertheless the far right have 5 years to drag us into their gutter and no doubt they will do their utmost to unravel the world as we know it.

I see that the tool everyone could use to Fact check politicians’ rhetoric, is being withdrawn by Meta, in order to appease Trump.

Democracy in action!

I think you will find that it was democracy that led to Trumps victory, it is always awful when people wont vote the way you want them to isnt it.

I think you will find that democracy based on lies is no democracy, but an opportunistic or unscrupulous power grab for dictatorship.

It seems they want to add empire building to this as well.

"Democracy based on lies is no democracy" I couldn't agree more. Who is going to tell Starmer?

No it’s absolutely correct that the lower education attainment, the more likely a person would vote for far right groups, and likewise higher ed attainment vote left. One of the reasons right wing groups ban books in schools

What's the excuse for Left wing groups banning books , I wonder.

I am really enjoying the Keynes biography MaizieD, its an engaging book. It will be interesting to compare how life has changed in the last 100 years with the other book, I love social history, poor people have really had it so hard in the past.

The Ragged Trouser Philanthropist quotes.

Are you enjoying the Keynes bio, BevSec?

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist is quite harrowing. I read it years ago and haven't tried since even though I have a copy and I'm a great one for re-reading. I think I can't bear how nothing has changed in 100 years.

Just read that the Duke of Marlborough is offering to hold a meeting between Nige and Musk at Blenheim Palace. Apparently he is a Reform supporter. Good to know its not just lumpen proles like me who support Reform! He must be concerned about what is happening to this country too.

Presumably he is looking at some way of making a deal over Inheritance Tax, considers himself a poor farmer. Anyone who seriously thinks that The Duke Of Marlborough has their interests at heart needs to have a lie down. Maybe read the Ragged Trousered Philanthropist whilst doing so

I have never read the ragged trousered philanthropist, must see if I can find it somewhere and give it a go. Am reading a biography on Keynes atm, recommended by fellow gransnetter. These book suggestions are very helpful.

Interesting to see the responses on this thread!
There is a constant battle between those who have their own agenda and those who want decency and common sense to prevail. Presently it is between globalists and nationalists. Too many people want to dispense with individual countries and create one world. They have been watching too much Star Trek. It just won't work and the sooner they face up to that, the better.

I so agree with you.

I wondered that too as so provocative and offensive across the political spectrum, setting us against each other in difficult times, but the conversations seems to have settled down.

At best a post designed to stir things up, at worst a ridiculous troll.

Either way, ignoring the OP is probably the best course.

The comments of the level of education aimed at certain cohorts is both insanely rude and laughable!

MaizieD Tue 07-Jan-25 14:43:46

He’s been to prison 3 times. 20 convictions to his name and was once a drug addict.
Take away the grand title and he’s no different to the great unwashed.

Maybe not, petra, after all. we're all the same when stripped of everything, but I'm willing to bet that, unlike the great unwashed, he has a massive sense of entitlement grin

In fact, I wonder if that sense of entitlement was what set him off on his 'unconventional' early 'career. hmm

And vote for Reform. I attended an all girls grammar school. I read quite a lot and although I wouldn’t consider myself any kind of an intellectual I wouldn’t say I was thick either.

I must be a thorn in your side for you to single me out.
Fame at last.
😁

Also, whilst I don’t agree with your political views, one can hardly accuse Farage of not being educated!

Watch out for a report in the media!

It was stupidity that mostly led to Trump's victory. Plus MAGA of course, who are hardly a democratic organisation. It didn't help that the Democrats got things wrong. The Republicans were prepared for the election, the Democrats weren't. They thought that because it was Trump running for President, after last time they wouldn't vote for him again. How wrong they were. Don't forget the post Covid affect on incumbent governments.

He also has a criminal record, not to be admired really.

prestbury Tue 07-Jan-25 11:59:20

I have read through all the comments and have come to mind that KateW19 is either a trool just trying to get a rise out of members or is actually a journalist also trying to do the same. For what is apparantly a first post she certainly appears to have succeeded.

The question is, is the former, frequently convicted, Marquis of Blandford supporting Reform because he's a man of the people or because he sees Reform as being the mostly likely party to protect his inherited wealth and status? hmm

Maybe he knows a lot about Clacton.

A very substantial criminal record.

Farage would be wise to keep well away from this bizarre suggestion.

Perhaps he fancies himself as a Puppet Monarch.

Democracy has always been based, if not on lies, then on at least doctoring the truth. Trump is not be the first leader to get in on a populist vote and certainly will not be the last.

So many facts are hidden from the general oublic, not just by right wing governments but by all.

Just for reference, I dislike Trump's rhetoric, find Musk quite frightening and voted Labour.
But I prefer not to align myself with some of the truly arrogant views expressed in some posts on here.

It's a lesson in how not to win hearts and minds if those with different views think they are so despised.

We seem to be in agreement.

Count me in.
