Supporters of a 78yr old Bristol woman, recalled to prison because a Government contractor said they couldn’t find an electronic tag small enough for her wrist, are going to hold a silent, candlelit vigil [on Friday 10 Jan] outside the prison where she is being held.

vegansrock I've done my own search and yes I found footage of one ambulance impeded by the tractors. There is no excuse for this, the same as when JSO impeded an ambulance on Waterloo Bridge. The tailbacks caused by any protest that clogs our roads is inexcusable and the 'cause' of the protestors does not justify it no matter how right they think they are.

rafichagran Mon 13-Jan-25 20:46:01

This woman broke the law, alot of people were inconvenienced, and upset by what her and the other protesters did.
I care about climate change and try to do my bit like recycling and not buying more than I need too, but I do not break the law.
I do not endorse, support, or condone what this woman has done, she is, in my opinion, exactly where she should be.

MissAdventure Mon 13-Jan-25 20:41:38

She doesn't need to be in prison, that's true.
She needs to be out, with a tag in place.

Her choice, I'd imagine, which she doesn't want, because that would inconvenience her.

What about those farmers who stopped ambulances getting through with their tractors. ? Jails are full to bursting and cost taxpayers billions. We are not benefitting by locking this woman up longer than bigger people . Its sizeist.

Can you link to the verified reports of these ambulances that were stopped by tractors please?

If they did then surely they too will face prosecution, especially if anyone died while being transported in a 'blues and twos' situation.

Caleo The other wrong is that prisons are unfit for purpose especially for the physically frail

So frail that she climbed a ladder to sit on the overhead gantry on a motorway? As for greater evils than people missing appointments, and so forth yes appointments like your father's funeral, the birth of your baby, saying goodbye to your dying relative, that hospital appointment you've waited 6 months for and will now have another 6 month wait, just trivia like that.

Climate Change is upon us, and misguided though some of the protestors were in some of their actions, their cause is very real. I think the length of sentences they were given was disproportionate and at least they had the guts to do something.

Prison will not change their views, but cause them to be martyrs, and has brought them desired publicity.

Are some of the critics on here doing their bit to lower their carbon footprint I wonder?

Caleo Mon 13-Jan-25 20:25:20

Babs, thank God for "silly old buggers" who risk all to demonstrate against far greater evils than people missing appointments, and so forth!

This woman is in jail because the oil lobby is strong enough to enforce her imprisonment.

Caleo Mon 13-Jan-25 20:18:20

Jtojt. That is not the point. The point is that the authorities are punishing such minor crimes disproportionately .Man made climate change, and the usage of private cars , are political footballs . Right wing people are unwilling to change their luxuries in the public interest.

The other wrong is that prisons are unfit for purpose especially for the physically frail .

But it is through a "fault of her own" - she broke the law

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime, however old you are.

The woman is in jail because she broke the law. She is not in jail " through no fault of her own".

Precisely my thought!

I understand the "logic", but it's a complete mistake to think it will garner support, it gets the opposite.

Thats what I don't understand in the choices of places to demonstrate.

They believe they know what Darwin would be thinking.

“Darwin would be turning in his grave to know we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction.”

Two more stupid, extremely sanctimonious old women, supporters of Just Stop Oil, have defaced Charles Darwin's grave in Westminster Abbey with orange chalk proclaiming 1.5 is Dead.
Led away by the police.
What a pair of prats.

What has Darwin to do with this?

I hope they are given buckets, hot water, soap and scrubbing brushes and supervised until every last little grain of paint has gone.
Then charge them with desecration of a grave the sentence for which is up to 10 years imprisonment.

We know their message is important but this is not the way to win minds and influence governments or the general public.

I am not saying this woman is without blame, I am saying that the way this is being handled is unfair. We can argue over the reasons why, and if I had missed a flight etc., I’d be fuming, but this is a 78 year old woman who’s wrists are too thin to wear a tag - though I find it hard to believe the tag can’t be adjusted - so has gone to prison. If I were a member if her family I would probably read her the riot act gif being a silly old bugger but I would also be demanding that the authorities find a suitable tag and release her from prison.

She doesn't have a right to be released, it is a privilege and one she can't have because she can't wear the tag.

In fact, that was most unusual because she'd served only about a fifth of her sentence.

That is desecration. Appalling.

Tags are usually worn on someone's ankle.
That includes under 16s, I think.

I have a hard job believing none can be found to fit this person.

She claims she can't wear it on her ankle.

At the Labour Party Conference last year a plan was announced to reduce the women’s prison population, even closing some women’s prisons through the establishment of a Woman’s Justice Board. It was acknowledged that prison isn’t working for women.

Only around a third of females sentenced to custody have committed a violent offence, and alternatives to women’s custodial sentences are being sought such as community sentences and residential women’s centres.

Surely the reason to keep someone in prison is if they are a risk to the public, not for punishment, because it just doesn’t work. A properly funded support and rehabilitation system would be much better and society would benefit. There is no benefit from sending this person back to prison. It just creates headlines and a martyr for her cause, although a very worthwhile one imo.

Agree totally.
I mean people might feel irritated by this woman and her actions but nobody was harmed though some were greatly inconvenienced.
Not a reason to imprison her.

You think the man who missed his father's funeral was irritated and his mother was irritated? I think they were probably devastated, same for the man who missed the birth of his baby. You don't get a second chance at those things. Can you say for certain that none of those or any of the other people haven't suffered mental health issues because of her actions? I don't think you can.

Wyllow3 Sun 12-Jan-25 14:34:10

About tags - its a private company, Serco, in some trouble - but I really don't believe they can't find something suitable or quickly make something for women generally, she cant be the only one.

You don't think it's fair, but I do. smile

Me too. What she did wasn't a "minor misdemeanor".
