Will Trump Last The 4 Year Term?

He's 79 in June and his increasingly bizarre pronouncements, erratic behaviour on the campaign trail and reports that he temporarily fell asleep (?) during Jimmy Carter's funeral leads me to wonder if his confusion is a pointer to dementia.

Exactly the reason he has openly declared President Biden to be unfit for office.

So maybe it's as well he has Musk to make his decisions for him.

As a contrast to Trump, I saw this quote today, attributed to the recently deceased President Carter:

A strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to be gentle, firm, thoughtful and restrained. It can afford to extend a helping hand to others. It is a weak nation, like a weak person, that must behave with bluster, and boasting and rashness and other signs of insecurity.

It's almost as if he knew. Maybe he did

Every US President who has ever been elected knew full well the strengths and weaknesses of America and its dominant attitudes, hopes and fears. Without that knowledge (and the ability to manipulate it) nobody could come within a million miles of winning the Presidency. It doesn't mean they'll be great Presidents, it just means they know what the most powerful buttons are and how to press them.

I was amazed that Trump got elected at all - luckily I couldn't find anyone to match my "every penny I own" bet! I thought I knew the public American mindset pretty well, so clearly something very powerful is going on. Depending upon what that something is, he may well last out for 4 years and more. If he becomes the dictator many people fear he will, he won't need to be elected again in any case. He'll declare himself Almighty Lord of the World and just sit tight.

Just despise him for his partisan pronouncements on the wildfires. Had California been Republican....

It’s strange that in many professions you retire at 65, but as one of the Leaders of the free world you can work well into your dotage. It makes you wonder who actually pulls the strings.

Hopefully not.

He said, did he not, that if people voted for him they would never need to vote again ? Chilling.

Horrifying absolutely .. Chilling !!

Trump always looks as though he is ‘out of it’ to me. He’ll never give up until he is in his gold plated pine box!such an arrogant rude man - pity all the young interns that will work around him!
What with AI, Musk, terrorists it’s going to be pretty grim

just say thank you that Musk can't stand for president

No. But he has just bought a President, is the next best thing.

Camry1952 Mon 13-Jan-25 14:20:46

Sorry for the typo. I meant being shot.

He has survived Covid and bring shot so he probably has 9 lives. All the legal problems must have caused a lot of stress which is very bad for health. So that may shorten his life but not likely since he has evaded repercussions his whole life.

Mr Trump's rhetoric, however disagreeable, is no guide to his mental capacities. Given the best health care I think he will stay the course. If he does suffer a catastrophic illness or die then Mr Vance is next in line. Americans have made their choice and Mr Trump has displayed first rate political skill in getting elected (and previously getting elected after seeing off his Republican rivals). We must see how it turns out.

Americans have had an assortment of leaders in the last many years, I'd imagine they'll get through this debacle well and find another. Many of these national government leaders kept Democracy alive through the insurrection.

Their new 2nd in charge may be the bigger problem.

As they say, keep your friends close, keep your enemies even closer.

I agree Iam64 and imaround. I am reminded of A.A.Milne : " Always keep a hold of nurse, for fear of finding something worse".

imaround Sun 12-Jan-25 19:20:13

Iam64, you may be the first person I have seen that shares my concern for the VP. I feel validated! grin

Trump wants power and money. He will let others rule the roost. Vance is super smart and calculating. He would do much more damage IMO.

Whether we like it or not POTUS Trump was democratically elected, he will serve his term unless he dies in office, is deemed unfit (medically or by an incident)

He has a VP, who will take over until the end of the term.

I completely accept Trump was democratically elected. I’m so relieved he isn’t our PM

His VP is imo more of a worry than even the Trumpster. Let’s hope the men (and it will be mostly men) behind the scenes keep Trump functioning

Trump will change the amendment concerning the Natural-born-citizen clause so that Mask can stand in his shoes, if he fall ill.

To change the American Constitution a proposal must receive a two-thirds vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to be proposed by Congress. It must then be ratified by either three-quarters of state legislatures or ratifying conventions in three-quarters of the states. Each state's vote carries equal weight, regardless of population or length of time in the Union.

I doubt Trump would be successful.

According to Wikipedia, Elon Musk acquired US citizenship in 2002

^I don't think he is dementing and I think he probably fell asleep because he was bored^

Well, if so, that is hugely insulting.

It would be of course, but I doubt that would bother him. He was very animated when talking to Obama. And when was at the Notre Dame gathering he was very alert watching people throughout..

I think he is just very self interested... and potentially very dangerous

Granmarderby10 Sun 12-Jan-25 12:20:37

I and many of the sane world can but hope not. However as he has surrounded himself with plenty of equally unbalanced individuals only time will tell.
Wake up USA only 4 more years to go!

HousePlantQueen Sun 12-Jan-25 11:59:24

I don't think that he will last the term functionally due to his reportedly appalling diet and alleged reliance of Adderel to keep himself alert. However, I agree that he will likely end up as some sort of weird, wheeled out frontman for the people he has appointed. Caveats; he appoints and dismisses people in a regular and unpredictable way, he will not be able to carry out all he has promised, however much his fans may wish it.

I am no fan of Trump the man, let alone Trump the POTUS, but accept of course that he was democratically elected. The fault for this situation lies with the Democrats in my view; they knew, the world knew, that Biden was failing, but still he was the candidate until it was too late and suddenly Kamala Harris was to be the saviour. It was unrealistic and rather desperate
