Peace in the Middle East

I’ve started this thread because for some unfathomable reason the one discussing the latest agreement has disappeared.

An important subject for all concerned, and too important to ignore.

So as you were folks.

This is only a ceasefire...a break in hostilities. Until the Palestinians have a country to call their own, and the rest of the Middle East accepts that Israel is here to stay, there will never be peace.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 20-Jan-25 09:45:11

If you turn the sound up on the videos from Gaza yesterday you can hear their chants, they do not want peace, they want the destruction of all Jews.

Grammaretto Mon 20-Jan-25 10:01:54

It's tragic. Don't people eventually tire of war?
I was amazed and delighted when the warring in NI ceased.
The next generation on both sides will hopefully want a different world order.
Blessed are the peacemakers.

Were they chanting in English or can you understand Arabic? I must admit I listened but couldn't understand a word. Have you listened to what some of the Israeli politicians, such as Ben-Gvir, have been saying?

My feeling is that we can do nothing about the past and throwing recriminations around (on both sides) achieves nothing. All we can affect is the future.

Much of the Middle East (eg Egypt, Jordan, Saudi) does accept that Israel is here to stay.

Old wounds never heal. Resentments about the loss of lands and kingdoms never dies, witness the UK to see the truth in that. Those resentments will forever persist in the Middle East and periodic wars will continue to rage.

True Casdon , resentment ? or anger of harm inflicted ,

In that case, the world is fated to continue as it is. Fortunately, history shows us that it's not entirely true, if there's a smidgeon of goodwill on both sides. You say "witness the UK", but compare the situation in Northern Ireland with 30 years ago. Delve back through time and there are plenty of cases where people eventually settled their differences. 500 years ago Catholics and Protestants were sworn enemies. Even the Vikings integrated within a few generations.

If you choose to live in the past, you're doomed.

It’s just the reality though growstuff. I’m sure those affected don’t see it as living in the past, it’s their hope for a peaceful non repressed, independent future. Most people aren’t zealots.

Fortunately, some people do have more vision and are more forward-thinking.

You are comparing the Vikings invading Britain with what has been happening in the Middle East for thousands of years?

There is no comparison.

The Britains didn’t have the UN to feed them it was a choice of submit or you starve Gaza hasn’t had that, yet!.

Grammaretto Mon 20-Jan-25 12:15:37

There will always be those who think it's vital to keep hate and centuries of bitter injustice alive for ever.
Just listen to the words of the Scotland's rugby anthem Flower of Scotland which commemorates the battle of Flodden in 1513.

What we learn from history is that we don't learn from history.

What we should be doing is supporting the peacemakers in all their difficult negotiations and to try to accept that there will always be an imperfect solution. After all we are humans.

eg "What the Vikings Did For Us"

There is no comparison with events that have happened over thousands of years in the Middle East.

Tho the Viking ‘blood rage’ does fit with what hamas did on 7th October 2023.That’s the only thing they have in common.

Yes, that incident is similar.

I don't think that's what growstuff meant, somehow, but I could be wrong.

True.

The Vikings were not all bloodthirsty warriors.
