America Rebelled Against the British Parliament.......

USA, sorry. Please pardon my frozen fingers (it's like an icebox in my study today).

At the time of the American rebellion, the British King was George III. Of COURSE they didn't want a King then (the British didn't even want him - read a genuine history book to find out why)!
I venture to say that what Americans have always wanted is a leader who makes them feel good about themselves and to reinforce their belief that getting away from Europe was the best thing they could have done (and that it was their God-given right to take "virgin" land as their own when they did it).
The people are encouraged to believe that the USA is the "last best hope of earth" and so they're tempted to follow any leader who vomits up that old "We are the greatest!" chestnut in his speeches. It's best not to apply hindsight to what happened during the rebellion (in the mid-1770s), as it tends to mire us in blissful ignorance of what happened to the USE and the Earth subsequently.
That's my two penn'orth anyway. Give me a few thousand more words and I could write a thesis on it. wink

Allira how many checks and balances do you need to rebuild 40 hospitals for example? Inertia is more accurate.

Seems to me some days that the Uk is held back by our system of government and there is a feeling of inertia, or stop and start again culture in government.
At least more than 20 percent of eligible US voters have supported Trump at the ballot box- so let’s wish them well and hope for good outcomes.

No, checks and balances.

I gather it is millions of Mexicans he is planning to deport, I don't think that will go down very well with the who use them as cheap labour on the farms and in their homes..

This actually has crossed my mind-party support. Deport the illegal imgrants.
Says much.

.....and they made it plain they didn't want a king.

So why have they got one? Donald Trump has said he will sign as many documents into law as he possibly can on his first day. Didn't Bad King John behave like this, thus his Barons made him sign Magna Carta (although that seems fairly redundant these days.)

So why have they got one?

Their Presidents are elected unlike our Monarchs.
However, looking at the USA, I am thankful for our Constitutional Monarchy.

However, thank goodness they did fight for their independence and let's celebrate 4th July 1776!

Maybe getting hostages released is some sort of light.

Those who dislike Trump will say it's nothing to do with him. No matter. However, there are numerous voices saying that without Trump's talk of all hell being let loose, this ceasefire wouldn't be happening

Biden and others have been working on this for so long and along comes Trump and people think he should get the credit?

Really?

When you travel to the US you won’t notice the difference, Trump will make migration harder, he will round up a few and send them back, claiming a reduction, the US needs migration always has done. Hes widely criticized for being controlling, compared to China he’s a pussy cat, they are the cause of many conflicts, they have no morals and support countries like Iran to spread terror across the globe.

I hope his impact on the international scene will be positive, that we will notice, ending the Ukraine war, reducing hostility in the Middle East, pushing back Chinese influence in many countries.

Not sure what light that can through on Trump's reign.

M0nica Mon 20-Jan-25 09:05:03

King John's barons were nowhere near as high minded as some posters things. They forceed King John to sign the magnaCarta because he was encroaching on their privileges and they wanted them back, all this democracy stuff was unintentional and entirely unplanned.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 20-Jan-25 08:52:42

Those that voted for POTUS Trump knew who and what they were voting for.

Their country, their choice.

No point in whinging and whining. It is what it is and we need to make the best of it. I don’t think he will be as bad as many seem to think. Biden wasn’t the best, either.

They are executive orders.

Some will have the force of law.

I think that forced repatriation will be one of the first things, others will undoubtedly try to reverse some of Biden’s actions.

There is a film called A day without a Mexican
The story is that all the Mexican workers disappear in California and the chaos that ensued.
It’s funny but with a very serous message.
Trump should watch it.

Best wait and see what is signed before assuming too much? Also does signing a piece of paper actually result in any change or action?

Look at what Trump says he will do. What his overall belief systems are. We don’t need to assume, he’s telling us who he is and Americans voted for this. Be interesting to see how things change
