Wow!
All eyes will be on America.

It was Barack Obama who renamed the mountain Denali as it was a sacred mountain to the indigenous peoples.. I wonder how he felt when Trump made a point of changing the name back to McKinley..

I also can see why people voted for him. Watching Starmer to-day I was just bored by the man.

How could any self-respecting woman even contemplate voting for a man who has so much disrespect for their sex? I - for one of VERY many - will never forget or forgive the 'grab them by the pussy' comments. Showed the real nature of this awful beast.

Panama must be cheesed off.

Territorial expansion - where ?

The LGBT community must be fed up.

He wants Greenland as well as Panama, and I wonder whether what he said recently about Canada was entirely a joke?

It can't only be the LGBT community that is fed up - a lot of others will be too. Those who are concerned for the environment can't be exactly thrilled, or those who want the death penalty abolished, to name just a few.

America is turning into a Game Show - problem is the Host wants all the prizes

I was driving home whilst listening to the radio, I didn't catch the name of the person being interviewed it had already started, before I switched on, it was a Labour politician who had been out to the US to observe/campaign with the Democrats, he did say that he wasn't surprised that they lost, a bit like Labour's years in the wilderness, they hadn't captured the blue collar vote, endorsing issues that had no bearing on their lives resonating far more with the white collar more comfortably off demographic. Of course that's been said now adinfinitum, both here and there it hardly needs repeating. Most people recognise that identity politics, amongst other causes has little bearing on the lives of the majority and in some instances only alienates them ,

I voted Remain I'm nearly 73. I cant stand Trump he's a criminal and how the heck can a criminal be even allowed to run for President. He will make it that he is there for years not just 4. He has already said that. The whole World is going to Hell in a Hand Cart as far as I can see. I'll just try to hang on to what I can and see if I have any chance of waiting it out in reasonable comfort, or die trying. In the meantime I'm going to spend my money as have a good time.

Nonnato2 Tue 21-Jan-25 14:42:17

Excellent speech from the President. Loved it! What a contrast from gloom and doom Starmer.

Louella12 Tue 21-Jan-25 14:41:58

Had this crime been committed by anyone else it would have been deemed misdemeanor. 20 year old crime? The left and press have been desperately trying to stop Trump. And it didn't work.

The rather awful comment about the female area was pretty ghastly. However, what he said initially was perfectly true. Rich old men often end up with beautiful wives. That can't be denied. Also, this chat was between 3 people in a private area. It was recorded and the rest is history. I don't want to shock but men and women are capable of saying quite lewd and crude things when with friends.

Also the endless comments about how it's the uneducated who voted for him. This is infuriating and rude. Does it make you feel good, basically calling others less intelligent than you? That would be enough to drive people to vote for him. I'd hate to be part of the smug group, dismissing millions of people as being uneducated. Awful!

And just a mention of tiktok, which thankfully has been reinstated. If you want a laugh just listen to the senators discussing this with the CEO. He's from Singapore. Or Singnapore as one poor soul thought. They couldn't find it on a map. They questioned the very patient CEO about him being a member of the CCP. Asking him endlessly if he had a Chinese passport. One guy asked if Tiktok accessed his Internet. Another wondering if Tiktok accesses an aeroplane. It was mind boggling.

And these people are supposed to be intelligent

If Trump doesn't believe in global warming, who is he going to blame for subsequent wild fires and bigger more frequent hurricanes.? When more oil is drilled for and used, will the oil barons be paying more tax or will they get preferential tax rates for supporting him?
Did Elon Musk give a nazi salute? It looked very much like it to me.

Yes because it is all as simplistic as that.
I voted remain, and probably would not do that again, I wouldnt vote Trump but under no circumstances would I have voted for the Democrats who I consider deeply regressive in some areas.

What in affordable health care and medicine ?
These are two areas that Trump just diminished by signing an act to take those rights away . This was sandwiched in there while people were getting excited about Panama and renaming the Gulf of Mexico .

sluttygran Tue 21-Jan-25 14:23:34

I find it hard to believe that anyone could support a fraudulent criminal with such a high opinion of himself, and such a propensity for untruths.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 21-Jan-25 13:17:52

Oh don’t be daft! She snuggled up sweet and close on the dance floor later!

Melania is a very private person and often wears sunglasses to hide her eyes. I think the brim of her hat was to cover them.

cookiemonster66 Tue 21-Jan-25 13:04:03

Melania's anti hubby kiss hat stole the show for me, am surprised it didn't have barbed wire around it as well LOL! then again who can blame her, who would want to kiss that!

On this other GN thread page we get lists of what Trump has signed already rather than just debating a speech that has now past.

I can see why people voted for him.

He hasn’t dilly dallied, immediately signing papers to start the ball rolling on his election pledges.

His second term as POTUS will either be everything he has promised and America will flourish or it could be the car crash those in the left are eagerly anticipating.

I do agree with him on a few of his points, no men in women’s sports, only two genders and putting his country first.

On the issue of the Panama Canal, the USA handed over control to Panama, who immediately started giving China preferential treatment and rates. China has a huge say on what goes on around there now.

I wouldn't have voted for him, there are basic Republican beliefs that would be contrary to my feelings on matters such as support of the gun, lobby, capital punishment and their stance on abortion amongst others. I don't agree with the influence of the Christian right, keep religion well away from politics, in that I agree with the French. One only has to look at theocracies to see how bad they are for their people.

Having said that, and not for the first time I agree with Galaxy, at this juncture I wouldn't have voted Democrat either. I was glad to hear his affirmation "there are only two sexes, male and female" and that men should not be able to partake in women's sports.

As for banning TikTok, or putting it up for sale. Having watched a programme recently where a group of school children took part in an experiment of going without their smart phones, what was revealed about the pernicious influence that has on them was truly disturbing. Trying to loosen the ever increasing tentacles of China in its massive overreach, not a bad thing imo. Similarly, offloading WHO and what they would impose on us all, given they are also very much under Chinese influence.

Anyway it all sounded like a load of gungho rhetoric, he'll have an uphill job before the mid terms in trying to implement a fraction of his intentions.

I did wonder if Melania had some sort of covert Peaky Blinders thing going on with the brim of her hat, he struggled to get in underneath it to give her a peck, she probably didn't want his heavy pan stick make up all over her me thinks .

Go woke go broke.
America will be great again.

That's one of the most irrelevant observations yet!
Beats opinions of Melania's hat for silly gringrin

Indeed, quite unbelievable. Amazing that Trump supporters were the very people who voted for Brexit- for 'Sovereignty' and are now quite willing and happy to bow and take the knee to Trump's rule and massive tarifs that will complete the ruining of our economy.

As for the hat- Melania chose well, to make sure her husband could not kiss her.

You seem to have an in-depth knowledge of why and what people voted 🙄🤔
You’re quite right, though Starmer doesn’t really need any help in ruining our economy..

The whole world seems to be turning right, Nanna.
There is a lot of hysteria around Trump. We should all wait and see the results before freaking out.

History is being re-written I see.

Apparently Nancy Pelosi was responsible for Jan 6 th.

Who knew😄

She refused an offer of 10,000 troops on the streets. Declining their presence certainly helped promote the unrest - which could have been averted or tamped down. Yes, she’s culpable to an extent - Democrat or not.

Oh for heavens sake . Your children and grandchildren will be fine. So long as you're not inflicting your thoughts on them.

Do we think there's a US Gransnet where everyone is wailing about Starmer? Or Farage? I very much doubt it.

It's bordering on hysteria and paranoia.

What a terribly ignorant comment.

Her grandchildren WILL be fine...As long as they were born into, and stay within a very rigidly defined box.

So if they weren't born colored, stay straight and cis than ya they'll be perfectly fine.

The totally trashed environment and ruined economy will just be an unfortunate consequence everyone will have to deal with as well.

Let's test it here. Who here voted for remain who is an enthusiastic, positive and optimistic supporter of Trump?

Oh good, I thought we’d never get round to Brexit confusedconfused
