I found this very disturbing, especially the look on his face with the first one.

Really??

oh the incredible irony sad

If I hadnt done a Nazi salute I wouldn't apologise. As I said now thousands of pictures of others doing the same movement are online, should they all apologise? People need to criticise Musk for numerous things, this isnt one of them.

Ladies please don’t jump on the bandwagon of prejudice & ignorance … research various media outlets & post your own opinion when you come to your own conclusion. Elon Musk has autism so that is why he may appear a bit different. That is why he expresses himself a bit more enthusiastically sometimes, as he did the other day celebrating President Trump’s inauguration. You probably didn’t see the whole context of the video where he put his hand on his heart then threw his arm out at the crowd exclaiming “Thank you for making this happen” to the crowd. Then he turned around repeating the same “Thank you & heart gesture” to those behind him. I’m sorry many of you see things differently; but freedom of speech is one of Elon Musk’s passion in life, so he probably wouldn’t object to your comments - maybe just feel sad. Isn’t that why he bought Twitter - now known as “X”.

This is the man who recently spoke to and supported the AFD .The AFD is a far right wing political party in Germany who have nazi sympathizers . A dangerous party . He supports them !!!!! This was no accident and you are very naive to claim otherwise .
Regarding the autistic excuse , autistic people have been very insulted by a comment like yours . They do recognise this for what it was and know enough not to do something like this .

"very naive to claim otherwise" - I've read the whole thread & that's it exactly. The apologists for that salute, if they've really watched the clip, are being naive. Regardless of the anatomy of it, I was instantly shocked & so were many others. If it was just over-exuberance, anyone would apologise or at least disclaim the Nazi overtones, no matter how rich or supercillious - unless they intended them.

He’s not a child. He’s a freaking billionaire. Of he’s capable of that, he’s certainly capable of managing his behaviour and impulses to not throw a N*zi salute in public nor anything that could be mistaken for one.

The lengths people will go to in order to excuse his behaviour is astounding.

He willingly and openly supports and promotes N*zi groups on his social media platform.

He doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt.

The company he chooses to keep speaks volumes about who he is.

Autism, and in his case Aspergers apparently, doesn't predispose a man to have links with the alt right in the US, and support far right politicians in Germany. That is an insult to people with Aspergers.

Babs03 - who said it predisposed him to have links to the far right etc??? What was claimed was that this condition would explain his more than normal enthusiastic reaction! Talk about twist the facts!

It's not just the gesture taken in isolation either though - he has supported a number of far right groups too, for instance.

Indieanne please look at worldwide media, it’s not Gransnetters who are influencing what the world thinks of the gesture. It’s done.

As said above, anyone who grew up in South Africa during the Apartheid era will have NO doubt whatsoever about this salute, and would NEVER do this by 'mistake'.

I believe this but obviously is open to interpretation. My take on it is that this man has links to the alt right, has been in conversations with a far right political group in Germany, and so even if he didn't do a Nazi salute it wouldn't surprise me if he did.

Casdon Wed 22-Jan-25 19:30:39

It’s what people believe it was that matters. I don’t mean Gransnetters, but groups, religions, countries. It’s not going to go away I don’t think.

Galaxy Wed 22-Jan-25 19:23:44

There are lots of examples of everyone from tennis players to Democrats doing the same arm movement all over Twitter as we speak. I personally think there are many things you could criticise Musk for this isnt one of them. Calling everyone a nazi really isnt going to work.

Milliedog Wed 22-Jan-25 19:22:26

*really wasn't a nazi salute - not 'national salute!

Milliedog Wed 22-Jan-25 19:20:25

I don't have any feelings for Musk either way, but it really wasn't a nation salute. If you look at the film footage, he was saying "I love you all" by putting his hand on his chest and then flinging his arm out to show he included everyone. It was no more a nazi salute than Superman flying around with one arm extended!

Pippa22 Wed 22-Jan-25 18:15:40

I saw it live and I didn’t think that it was a Nazi salute. He does have bizarre behaviour, I wonder if he has adhd perhaps.
Don’t know if he has a partner but he does have a little boy who was on stage with him at the inauguration and has an adult daughter.

Bluesmum Wed 22-Jan-25 17:42:50

Unlike many on here who obviously know this person well enough to heaven a personal insight into his character, I have never met him and from what I have read and heard, have no desire to do so. Having watched the incident on tv, I do clearly remember hearing him say words to the effect “my heart goes out to you”, hence the weird gesture, and I prefer to believe it was just that, a heartfelt expression of his joy and elation, nothing more! Niaive? Moi???

There are images of Biden, Clintons (both), Obama, Bush, etc all making the same salute. If the whole video is watched, then see how Musk puts his hand on his heart and then over-dramaticaly throws said heart to the audience.

Isn't he 'on the spectrum' as we say? I suspect he was overcome with emotion and was struggling to keep his composure.

Your hand stretched out flat palm down like that does not denote throwing his heart to the audience, it also doesn't denote punching the air. It was a nazi salute and I bet he's loving hearing people defending him when he will know exactly what he was doing.

SWGran Wed 22-Jan-25 17:06:34

Having seen it myself, if anyone genuinely thinks that is a Nazi salute then you either haven't watched it or you are simply looking for something that isn't there. It's a 'hand on heart to everyone out there' gesture.

The 'future of civilisation is assured' comment relates to is his Starship program taking humans to Mars (and beyond) which he has stated many, many times before in relation to putting humans on another planet. And if anyone cares to check his X account he rubbished the idea of the Nazi salute with, I would say, the contempt it deserves (and yes, there is a video of Obama doing the 'salute' in one of his speeches but without the same outpouring of outrage).

He's a scary man. His salute was also scary and disgusting. The trouble is when he says "jump" KS, DT and other leaders will probably say "how high?"

The lunatics are now in charge of the asylum.

Oh dear me, just a tad over the top 🤦🏼‍♀️

Just a tad!!!

What has Musk said...was it meant as a nazi salute. What I don't understand is why our politicians and other people don't boycott X and reduce his wealth and power.

Elon Musk doesn’t need our politicians or any other country’s politicians to make him as rich as crassus.
This interest in politics won’t last. Like most neurodiverse people he will move onto something else soon.
