Should Mariann Budde have remained neutral at the national prayer service or was she right to use the occasion to score political points?

Doodledog Wed 22-Jan-25 10:54:48

Can you give us more details please? Your post is rather loaded.

What makes you think she was scoring political points? She was speaking as a Christian, supporting the oppressed.

Given that Trump has not only broken nearly all the rules of political etiquette but also torn up the rule book, I think she must have felt that she could not remain neutral.

I would say absolutely the reverse.

She has a duty as a Christian to speak out.

RosiesMaw2 Wed 22-Jan-25 11:02:01

She's not the first cleric to have called a political leader to task ("Will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest") ie criticized or corrected someone for their mistakes or failings, and hopefully she won't be the last.

There's already a lengthy thread about this - try having a read through that and you'll see what most people think about it.

And thank goodness she didn’t shy away from doing her duty (not that anyone will stop Trump unless they are a better marksman than the last two). I enjoyed watching his discomfort.

In a way this shows how great America is.
A Bishop can put forward her Christian view point on tv and the President listens to it.

I think Thomas à Becket beat her to it -only we didn't have tv in those days.

silverlining48 Wed 22-Jan-25 11:21:01

I don’t think it shows how great America is. Trump certainly didn’t appear to find her words of any interest, so let’s see what happens next.

grannyqueenie Wed 22-Jan-25 11:22:20

I’d say that, sadly, the gap between “ listening to it” and actually hearing it in a way that would result in any change in Donald Trumps attitudes and behaviour is a very large one. Brave woman to stand by her Christian principles.

Aveline Wed 22-Jan-25 11:23:19

I can only hope she doesn't end up like Thomas a Becket!

It is being discussed yes but it’s a specific point.

I am unsure as to what to think, I wanted opinion on this point.

loopyloo Wed 22-Jan-25 11:23:59

But could that have happened in China or Russia?

well he's certainly made his feelings clear in a late night rant last night..

Not best pleased!!

A Christian speaks out, why not ? atheists do

silverlining48 Wed 22-Jan-25 11:29:05

Exactly Pascal. I commend the bravery saying what she did.

MissAdventure Wed 22-Jan-25 11:29:38

She has a duty to speak out, I think.
She did exactly the right thing.

MaizieD Wed 22-Jan-25 11:41:13

What is 'political' about speaking truth to power?

To quote Jesus
"You have ears but you do not hear"
might be closer to the truth

LizzieDrip Wed 22-Jan-25 11:51:02

She was speaking on behalf of her God - that’s her role. She was asking for mercy for those in Trump’s ‘firing line’.

Kindness and mercy to fellow man (women) is a fundamental Christian value. That’s what she was asking for - no political statement.

I’m an atheist but I admire her as a human being. Well done to her!

Barleyfields Wed 22-Jan-25 11:51:22

Indeed. I wouldn’t say Trump ‘listened’.
