Should Mariann Budde have remained neutral at the national prayer service or was she right to use the occasion to score political points?

M0nica

Who is she, what is she, why is what she did significant?

Oh dear …

LizzieDrip Wed 22-Jan-25 15:07:17

I wonder whether he was testing her? Expecting her to validate him.. it makes her doubly courageous if that was the case

Good point pascal30.

Trump is surrounded by boot-licking, sycophantic, yes men / women. He clearly does not expect anyone to question or challenge any of his ‘God given’ views - even when his views do not align with the word of God!

The way that those around him are sucking up the playground bully is truly sickening. Thank God for one brave woman!

LizzieDrip Wed 22-Jan-25 15:08:25

to the playground bully

She's not the first cleric to have called a political leader to task ("Will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest") ie criticized or corrected someone for their mistakes or failings, and hopefully she won't be the last.

I think she was right.
Speaking truth to power is a good thing.
And a Christian thing , as it happens.

M0nica Wed 22-Jan-25 15:14:21

Maizie I avoided watching, reading or taking any notice of the inauguration, knowing that we will hear all too much of Trump, once he was in power.

NotSpaghetti Wed 22-Jan-25 15:15:24

But could that have happened in China or Russia?

I don't think that is relevant - the OP says she wants to know if she was right in this case.

Playground bullies response:

After he returned to the White House, Trump said, “I didn’t think it was a good service” and “they could do much better.” But later, in an overnight post on his social media site, he sharply criticized the “so-called Bishop” as a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater.”

“She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart,” said Trump, a Republican, adding that Budde didn’t mention that some migrants have come to the United States and killed people.

“Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job!” Trump said. “She and her church owe the public an apology!”

(by the way, wiki tells us in a study in 2023

"Studies have shown that migrants are less likely to be criminals than the average person, and that native-born US citizens are incarcerated at higher rates for homicide than undocumented immigrants.)

She wrote a book How we Learn to be Brave

I think it might be worth reading.

She wasn't scoring political points.

She was speaking as a Christian with compassion.

Neither are what you might call The Land of the Free, are they?

Presumably because she is Bishop of Washington.

😂😂😂

Seems quite logical to me too 😀

Maremia Wed 22-Jan-25 15:45:05

A Christan Bishop, preaching a Christan message of kindness in a Christian Church...what's wrong with that? Oh of course, it annoyed Trump. Maybe more so because it was a woman?

Granmarderby10 Wed 22-Jan-25 15:50:10

She was a woman n a position of some power. She said what needed to be said and he couldn’t interrupt.
In essence everything he hates most! Yay!!!!
Good for her.

Barleyfields Wed 22-Jan-25 15:52:27

Yes, it must have been particularly galling for a woman to have taken him to task.

BlueBelle Wed 22-Jan-25 15:55:10

She did well, he faked boredom she said what she needed to say in a clear non judgemental way and a non political way
He is a complete a…h…

mokryna Wed 22-Jan-25 16:02:47

I think, in the clip that I saw, she did very well.

As one same sex couple explained a few months ago, they fear that their child will be taken from them as they don’t conform to some people’s thinking.

LizzieDrip Wed 22-Jan-25 16:04:40

And yet, we have GN posters on the Religion thread (albeit only a few) calling the Bishop “an idiot vicar who needs educating”; presuming she must be transgender, and referring to her words as “woke nonsense”.

Nowt as queer as folk!

Barleyfields Wed 22-Jan-25 16:07:33

No pun intended?! 😊

LizzieDrip Wed 22-Jan-25 16:26:34

Ha, no pun intendedgrin

Luckygirl3 Wed 22-Jan-25 16:36:11

Well done that lady!
What is the point of clerics if they do not pronounce the beliefs of their religion?

flump Wed 22-Jan-25 16:41:28

Clarification for those that need it: The Bishop is married to a man and has children.

Some Anglican churches including those in the USA, do allow same-sex marriage but there are some around the world which do not, including the Church of England, some Anglican churches in Africa, S America and Asia.
So it is not a religious belief as such, it is dependent on which branch of the church.

Anniebach Wed 22-Jan-25 17:07:21

Some Anglican Churches do hold blessings for same sex couples, difficult because the marriage service speaks of one
man and one woman.

theworriedwell Wed 22-Jan-25 17:27:38

He's a hypocrite, didn't he stand outside her church with a bible in his hand 4 years ago scoring political points? Doesn't like being outplayed by a woman does he.

theworriedwell Wed 22-Jan-25 17:30:28

Hang on aren't we missing the big question? He was going to end the war in Ukraine on day one of his presidency, have I missed the announcement?
