But could that have happened in China or Russia?

It is being discussed yes but it’s a specific point.

I am unsure as to what to think, I wanted opinion on this point.

I can only hope she doesn't end up like Thomas a Becket!

I’d say that, sadly, the gap between “ listening to it” and actually hearing it in a way that would result in any change in Donald Trumps attitudes and behaviour is a very large one. Brave woman to stand by her Christian principles.

I don’t think it shows how great America is. Trump certainly didn’t appear to find her words of any interest, so let’s see what happens next.

A Bishop can put forward her Christian view point on tv and the President listens to it.

I think Thomas à Becket beat her to it -only we didn't have tv in those days.

I would say absolutely the reverse.

She has a duty as a Christian to speak out.

And thank goodness she didn’t shy away from doing her duty (not that anyone will stop Trump unless they are a better marksman than the last two). I enjoyed watching his discomfort.

There's already a lengthy thread about this - try having a read through that and you'll see what most people think about it.

She's not the first cleric to have called a political leader to task ("Will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest") ie criticized or corrected someone for their mistakes or failings, and hopefully she won't be the last.

Given that Trump has not only broken nearly all the rules of political etiquette but also torn up the rule book, I think she must have felt that she could not remain neutral.

Barleyfields Wed 22-Jan-25 10:54:55

What makes you think she was scoring political points? She was speaking as a Christian, supporting the oppressed.

Doodledog Wed 22-Jan-25 10:54:48

Can you give us more details please? Your post is rather loaded.

Should Mariann Budde have remained neutral at the national prayer service or was she right to use the occasion to score political points?
