The date of Diwali varies, it is based on a lunar calendar I think. I'm not sure how much it varies.
Not around Christmas time though.
October - November?
I have been alarmed by the number of GN members who seem to seriously be calling for Trump like political leaders in the UK. Leaving aside his racism, bankruptcies, misogyny, sexual assaults, and my 'favourite', mocking a disabled reporter.....which of these executive orders do you find an attractive prospect;
Cancelling the price bar on insulin, was $35 per month, now forecast to be $1500 per month
Cancelling state funding of cancer research
KKK members in the South, roaming the streets, handing out 'go home' leaflets ( I understand this may be appealing to some)
Pardoning criminals who assaulted Police Officers
So, which of these appeals to you?

I think part of the admiration we feel for Trump is that he seems so definite about things. Our own politicians are so afraid to express their true feelings, we just don't know where they stand on important matters.
Also our government(s) just don't seem to care about this country or the wishes of the British people. Once they are in power, they follow their own personal agenda.
Our history, our culture, our traditions don't seem to matter to most of them.
Those of us who do care are sick of being ridiculed and condemned for complaining about the decline in everything. People who live in traditional English towns and villages are having foreign cultures forced on them, changing the whole atmosphere of our country.
We are sick of being ignored. Can I just ask for an example of what foreign culture you have had foisted upon you? ( a genuine question, by the way; I do remember, many years ago feeling a bit upset that my children’s school featured Diwali for their Christmas production instead of the usual nativity although, in retrospect I guess it was very forward thinking).
instead of - No
As well as - Yes.
Although they are at different times of the year.
I remember being in Singapore and there were displays about Diwali in several places and that wouldn't have been in December.

"People need to realise they can't just go and live where they choose"
.....so true Claremont!
If those naughty European "settlers" hadn't thought "Oh ho! Here's a rich and fertile land, we'll have a bit of that & bugger the rights, traditions and culture of whomever's here already" there would be no issue.Talk about imposing a foreign culture. Even more sickening now that Trump intends to make the lives of Native Indians even worse than before- and talks about them 'not being American citizens'
I suppose he wants to drill for oil on their sacred land
.
The OP btw, does not ask anyone to 'justify themselves' but to just state their reasons. And no-one has to reply either.

I'm a big fan of Italian food - is that foreign culture ok- or not?

I have read your post with interest and with regards to your children know exactly where you are coming from. My transgender daughter and her husband live in the US and although they live in a blue state I can‘t help but worry
Thank you both for illustrating the real fears of real individuals, groups and families. My heart goes to you all. And all the other groups threatened at the moment, from native Indians to the families of migrants- because of course, if the father or both parents are forced to emigrate, what will happen to the children.

Here is the honest truth about living in the US right now, from my singular perspective.
I am lucky, we are white and live in a blue state. But I have a daughter and a LGBTQ son. (I havent even broached this topic because it is so volatile on GN. But we are scared for his safety in the future) We are keeping a low profile right now.
I am about to pull money out of savings to majorly stock up on food. We already have shortages of eggs, chicken and beef are getting harder to find and more expensive. Now that crops are rotting in fields, we are on a countdown to our grocery stores being bare. Luckily I garden and start my seeds inside each year. I will have some vegetables this summer.
I have begged my daughter to get an IUD that will last through Trumps term.
I am thankful, for the first time in my life, that we have a second amendment.
I never in a million lifetimes would have thought this is where we would be.
Thank you for being so brave, open and honest. As Mum to two lesbian daughters I completely appreciate your fears and anxieties.
Stay safe and please keep us posted

I think you will find the main reason for people in the UK supporting Trump is because he is brutal when it comes to immigration . That’s it. They seem ready to ignore his associations with the alt right, his many convictions, and his preposterous claims to want to purchase Greenland and take over Canada. Am pretty sure that anything and everything will be ignored in favour of his stance on immigration.
And this is a man whose mother arrived in the US on a boat from Scotland and who shares the US with very many immigrants of all nationalities. Only native Americans are indigenous and funnily enough they populated Mexico as well, so Mexicans are actually more American than Trump et al.
Spot on Babs03, and Farage appeals to those in this country who want to see Trumps approach here.
I have been taken aback by the vitriol of some posters on Gransnet recently both in relation to this and the sentencing of the Southport killer.
I certainly hope that this stops and our food sources continue to send food to our stores.
I am not going to wait and see though. Worst case scenario I have a good stock of food.

That’s hardly likely though is it Allira.
Well, perhaps just someone might realise how utterly stupid this is or else the crops will rot.

75% of the migrants farm workers havent shown up to the farms due to ICE in the area.
This part of California produces 25% of the produce for the US.

imaround my thoughts are with you - what a nightmare!
Please keep posting so that we in the UK are aware of what’s really happening. There’s so much crap misinformation on social media, and some people here are falling for it, believing that Trump is great🙈
I hope your son & daughter stay safe; your son deserves the right to be who he is, and to be proud of that. No judgement from me, I can assure you. Take no notice of small-minded bigots!
Take care

A non profit in Milwaukee has notified the people that get their free produce boxes that they are unable to get produce from the farm in Texas because no one is picking the food.
It has already started unfortunately. We will have about 2 weeks, in my opinion, until we start feeling the full effect of it.

The USA needs to get to grips with this.
Now that crops are rotting in fields
Can I ask, politely, why crops are rotting already? Trump has only been in office a week.
They may in future, of course.
I know this happened last time Trump was in office but so soon? Or is this scaremongering to frighten you?
I'm asking from a practical point of view.

I would again direct you to actually watching and listening to Reform's Conferences and also to President Donald Trump's Inauguration Speech and you will then see that everything they are about and their values are what the majority of decent people share. There is nothing else to be said, it's all there, how the extreme left are ruining both America and the UK with their woke idealogy and anti-democratic ideas. Obviously you haven't bothered to find out and see just what a nice person Nigel Farage is. Again, your comments against us on here who support decent values are inflammatory, always trying to have a go at us under different headings. I am not going to waste any more time on your comments. There is nothing else to be said - get yourselves educated!
You still haven't explained what the values are that the majority of decent people share.
us on here who support decent values
There is nothing else to be said
Well, I think there is more to be said because, before we can evaluate what you have said, we need to know exactly what these values are and why they are decent.
An explanation would be helpful.
Thank you in anticipation.
That must be very difficult for you imaround. I wish you well.

American people are not British people or Australians for that matter. Trump would never be elected in either country. I can quite see why he was the ‘chosen one’ looking at the Democrats and I hope it works out as the majority would wish without too many casualties en route. He doesn’t like wars so at least there is that and I do think he is much better at foreign policy issues than any of the Dems who were pretty aggressive and pretty useless that way. As for Starmer, he is disgraceful and I can see why people make comments about preferring Trump ( I personally don’t agree with that, mainly because of the gun policies and his targeting Mexicans and minorities). The whole post is goady and aggressive, and I think flouncing ( another piece of aggressive commentary) is quite in order.
