“Speaking in the Oval Office, the US President told Fox News Ukraine's President Volodomyr Zelensky was "no angel" and added he "shouldn't have allowed this war to happen.“

This is scary stuff! What on earth did Trump think Zelenskyy should have done? Just handed Ukraine across to Putin? What planet is this man on?

Galaxy Sat 25-Jan-25 10:01:27

I agree David, it is heartbreaking but I dont see what other way there will be.

Cossy I wouldn’t be happy for my sons to die on the battlefields of Ukraine. It is a completely senseless war.
Of course we need young people to defend our country. That’s not in doubt.

At the moment, our government is not offering soldiers but £3 billion a year for the next 100 years so that other nations can have their military engaged/killed.

Please don’t get me wrong, I do want this war to stop, but my fear is complete capitulation might lead to other countries which used to be USRR led might be invaded, where does it end?

I think the British should get out of Ireland, too.

Don’t stir the pot Ireland is quiet at present, making the best of a difficult situation.
Changes to customs regulations in future could make it easier.

I hope that the eventual settlement will not be seen as rewarding Putin for his invasion of a sovereign country.

If it does it puts other countries, including our own at risk.

We know that Putin has always said that the U.K. is one of the first in his sights in time of war.

OldFrill Sat 25-Jan-25 11:36:10

Putin thought he could just walk in and claim Ukraine, Trump now intends to do the same with Greenland. Russia wants Greenland too. Maybe that's Putin's payoff, Trump will let him have Ukraine if Russia doesn't challenge Trump over Greenland. Win win for Trump.

MaizieD Sat 25-Jan-25 11:44:16

We know that Putin has always said that the U.K. is one of the first in his sights in time of war.

He's done for us already really, by funding Brexit.

Physically, he'd have to overrun Europe to get to us and, anyway, what would be the point? We don't have any quantities of valuable resources (unlike Ukraine). So why bother?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 25-Jan-25 11:52:25

Don’t know, but I am always reading that he has us in his sights. Maybe because he sees us as the biggest potential threat?

AGAA4 Sat 25-Jan-25 12:06:24

There was a Russian ship in our waters that was checking the undersea cables recently. It was warned to move which it did and a message was sent to Putin to say "we can see you"

More likely sees us as the most vulnerable for sabotage, there are a lot of undersea cable and pipelines that could cause chaos in the UK if they were damaged

I agree, Cossy
First Ukraine, then Moldova, the Baltic States

Before we know it we'll have another USSR.

ronib Sat 25-Jan-25 13:52:34

Well let’s think about this - will Moldavia and the Baltic States come to the rescue when Putin attacks London? Will they care? Why exactly do we?

Aveline Sat 25-Jan-25 13:57:19

I just don't understand Russia. Isn't it quite big enough? Did NATO ever threaten to invade it for no reason? Isn't it all a failed ego boost for Putin?

The Ukrainian has rare earth metal.

Well, they wouldn't be able to because they'd already be back in the USSR.

I made the mistake of assuming that Moldavia and the Baltic States remained outside Russia in the long term - there’s so much hype surrounding Putin. Realistically Putin had his work cut out trying to reclaim parts of Ukraine - it didn’t go well. Does he have any soldiers left to carry the fight to Moldavia and The Baltic States? He has imported 300,000 from North Korea.

A Russian spy ship was in UK waters again a couple of days ago.

Putting North Sea pipelines out of action would cripple the UK for months, I’m sure the Navy are keeping a close watch but a sneak attack would probably get through, it’s all too easy.

petra Sat 25-Jan-25 17:47:24

It’s Moldova Rob
They’ll be no resistance there. When it comes to Bulgaria and Romania ( both in the EU and members of NATO that’s a whole different ball game.
Putin won’t go anywhere near Poland. He knows full well the poles have the largest army in Europe and their fingers are on the trigger just waiting the chance to kill some Russians.

Reading your link I’m a bit concerned by the lack of nautical knowledge shown by the minister for defence.
He stated the Russian ship was now heading towards the Mediterranean and then it had gone through the straights of Dover and was now in Dutch waters. 🤷‍♀️

I don't think "drill baby drill" as a slogan is going to result in cheaper oil in the next month or so! Surely it'll take a while for production levels to increase from today's by 150% or whatever it would take to majorly impact world oil prices?

Thing is with wars, every day, every week, every month before a truce is a disaster.

Trump's statement very unfair to Zelensky, I don't remember him ever claiming to be an angel, his angelicness has nothing whatsoever to do with the conduct of the war & quite how he could have avoided it eludes me.

When John Healey referred to the vessel Yantar heading to the Mediterranean, that was in November 2024. It returned this month and passed through British waters and sailed to Dutch waters.
