Mandelson might not make it. The FBI are looking into his past.

Oh Starmer. When you have choices in front of you why do you seem to consistently pick the dud? Mandelson probably has one of the best Rolodex list of contacts in the world.
His cv is very impressive. The problem is, who will he be representing if he is accepted by the new administration?
Will he be representing the UK, the EU or China? These are legitimate questions, and clearly the FBI are sufficiently concerned.

This appointment must now surely be doubtful?
I think he’s toast.

Of course it’s diplomacy, but it’s interesting watching him grovel. What people will do for a bit of power and money!

This is from “the prince of darkness” today.

I bet he was crossing his fingers under the table.

I hope he doesn’t fall off back peddling that fast….😂
On second thoughts….. 😁

Oh, come off it, its called diplomacy and has been practiced for centuries.

Jut out of interest, here is Trump's appointee to the UK:

The "I" reported this morning that the White House has confirmed that Mandelson be accepted as ambassador.

I think some conditions are to be attached to the appointment because of past links with China so they've used some creative thinking to solve that issue.

Just shows how wrong the Daily Telegraph can be pre-empting the decision. So much about Mandelson being "toast".

No need to read more than the hilarious headline to know it’s true. Never trust the Telegraph…..

I am inclined to think now that "The Telegraph Newspaper" is an oxymoron.

For the OP (FGT), yes, Mandelson was suspended several times by Labour for assorted dodgy dealings. And now he's a Lord. Major & Heseltine did their best to bankrupt the country (Black Wednesday?) and are now a Sir and Lord respectively. In the old days they'd have had a short trip to meet a chap with a big axe to grind.

And as several have said, if the FBI would like to investigate Chump, he's a multiple bankrupt, and a rapist (according to the C4 documentary, early 2016).

As for "ties to China" -- Elon Musk has lots of them, which is why he makes soundbites about the jailing of Tommy Robinson here being an attack on his human rights . . . .but the concentration camps the Chinese have put a million+ Uyghur Muslims into don't get a mention.

Whether we like Mandelson or not its Trump trying to manipulate the UK: if we turned round and refused to allow a Trump diplomatic appointment you can imagine the consequences.

Trump and Epstein -

The most notable person to be associated with Jeffrey Epstein is President Donald Trump, who was photographed with Epstein at Mar-a-Lago in 1997 and again in 2000 with wife Melania and Epstein’s partner, British media mogul heir Ghislaine Maxwell

In fact, in the aforementioned 2002 New York Magazine profile of Epstein, Trump crowed about his friend and touted his fondness for younger women: “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy,” Trump said at the time. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life

We went through that on the last Mandelson thread GG13, no traction there

as he wasn't involved in that side of Epstein.

Also numbers of USA politicians not too keen on undoing that past.

Trump himself was implicated

Peter Mandelson in the Labour Party is one thing; as an Ambassador representing Britain he is another, and not a person I want representing me. He has a reputation for dishonest dealings, and as a 'fixer' making promises he cannot keep to win a deal, or an election.

It’s his association with Jeffrey Epstein which concerns me.

If Trump has access to the Epstein papers he could have leverage over Mandelson.

I was surprised at Trumps reaction to the DeepSeek app coming to the market on the day of his inauguration.
One would think that he would be furious that it’s a threat to US tech companies.
But his reaction was more or less well this is a wake-up call to all of you. It can only be a good thing

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:23:27

This is about Trump sabre rattling. He's not got a clean bill of health as regards China, either but its been whitewashed away

He’s a slippery character and I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. He will look after the interests of himself first and the country second. I remember all too well from the Blair years. But I expect Trump will accept him.

nanna8 Tue 28-Jan-25 22:57:29

These days I would think most successful businessmen and women have ties to China. Cheap products made to spec, the whole world is involved with them ,unfortunately or fortunately depending on your viewpoint. Besides, they share many political beliefs.

‘Old news’ then?
Wouldn’t trust this guy to hand me the right change in a corner shop.
Oh well.

This just shows how little you understand the kind of man Peter Mandelson is. He is the sort of man who would always give you the right change in a corner shop, but if he didn't like you, you would unaccountably trip up and end up flat on your face as you walked out

As British Ambassador at the court of King Donald, why should there be any question of Peter Mandelson's alliegeance to anybody but the country he represents?

These sort of questions remind of the questions that in my childhood, used to face Roman catholics in the armed forces 'Would their loyalty to the pope undermine their loyalty to their country?' This was a stupid question then and so is suggesting that Peter Mandelson would be torn between 'loyalties' to his country the EU and the Chinese now.

At the moment I can think of no one better qualifed to deal with the snake pit that Washington will be under Trump than Peter Mandelson.

The Prince of Darkness!

Trump probably didn’t have to dig too deep to find some dirt.
