Mandelson might not make it. The FBI are looking into his past.

Oh Starmer. When you have choices in front of you why do you seem to consistently pick the dud? Mandelson probably has one of the best Rolodex list of contacts in the world.
His cv is very impressive. The problem is, who will he be representing if he is accepted by the new administration?
Will he be representing the UK, the EU or China? These are legitimate questions, and clearly the FBI are sufficiently concerned.

This appointment must now surely be doubtful?
I think he’s toast.

keepingquiet Tue 28-Jan-25 20:00:34

Who does the FBI represent?

valdali Tue 28-Jan-25 20:04:36

If it was Trump we'd put forward & the FBI were vetting, they'd veto him pronto

J52 Tue 28-Jan-25 20:05:11

“Lord Mandelson, a close ally of Keir Starmer, has had his Washington appointment approved in principle, according to multiple reports.

He is set to move to the US next week, where he will need to have his position rubber-stamped by Mr Trump.”
LBC current news. Also in other news reports

Panic over!

Wyllow3 Tue 28-Jan-25 20:12:40

He has now been "accepted" after earlier reports a brief had been handed to the FBI.

In all news sources now, including GB news, after those earlier reports 6 or so hours ago..... its now

Trump game playing.

At the last election I was relieved that the Tories didn't get to muck up the country for yet another term. Now it's starting to look as though Labour isn't going to be much better. I mean, wasn't Mandelson ridiculed and disgraced not so long ago....? Kier Starmer really couldn't think of anyone better for the job? I despair.

Of course, your preferred people are the pinnacles of decency OP

Yawn.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 28-Jan-25 20:26:13

😁
‘Old news’ then?
Wouldn’t trust this guy to hand me the right change in a corner shop.
Oh well.

bathsalts Tue 28-Jan-25 20:27:18

Oh well at least he's not sendng people to their deaths like Trump.

Oh well indeed.

petra Tue 28-Jan-25 20:38:50

Of course Trump approved him. He recognises what Mandelson is: a man he can do business with 😉
He’s got a Teflon coating just like Trump.
This is an old story but this is Mandelson.

Apparently, “While Lord Mandelson has been confirmed as the UK’s choice for ambassador, he could still be rejected by the Trump administration.

The US could refuse “agrément” – the formal acceptance of an envoy by a host country – vetoing the nomination without explanation, under the terms of the Vienna Convention.”

Source The Telegraph at 6pm tonight.

25Avalon Tue 28-Jan-25 20:50:36

Trump has approved him.

25Avalon Tue 28-Jan-25 20:51:31

End of - for the moment anyway

Sago Tue 28-Jan-25 20:54:47

The Prince of Darkness!

Trump probably didn’t have to dig too deep to find some dirt.

M0nica Tue 28-Jan-25 21:11:12

As British Ambassador at the court of King Donald, why should there be any question of Peter Mandelson's alliegeance to anybody but the country he represents?

These sort of questions remind of the questions that in my childhood, used to face Roman catholics in the armed forces 'Would their loyalty to the pope undermine their loyalty to their country?' This was a stupid question then and so is suggesting that Peter Mandelson would be torn between 'loyalties' to his country the EU and the Chinese now.

At the moment I can think of no one better qualifed to deal with the snake pit that Washington will be under Trump than Peter Mandelson.

No need to read more than the hilarious headline to know it’s true. Never trust the Telegraph…..

Oh well.

This just shows how little you understand the kind of man Peter Mandelson is. He is the sort of man who would always give you the right change in a corner shop, but if he didn't like you, you would unaccountably trip up and end up flat on your face as you walked out

These days I would think most successful businessmen and women have ties to China. Cheap products made to spec, the whole world is involved with them ,unfortunately or fortunately depending on your viewpoint. Besides, they share many political beliefs.

maddyone Tue 28-Jan-25 23:35:46

He’s a slippery character and I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. He will look after the interests of himself first and the country second. I remember all too well from the Blair years. But I expect Trump will accept him.

Peter Mandelson in the Labour Party is one thing; as an Ambassador representing Britain he is another, and not a person I want representing me. He has a reputation for dishonest dealings, and as a 'fixer' making promises he cannot keep to win a deal, or an election.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:23:27

This is about Trump sabre rattling. He's not got a clean bill of health as regards China, either but its been whitewashed away

I was surprised at Trumps reaction to the DeepSeek app coming to the market on the day of his inauguration.
One would think that he would be furious that it’s a threat to US tech companies.
But his reaction was more or less well this is a wake-up call to all of you. It can only be a good thing

It’s his association with Jeffrey Epstein which concerns me.

If Trump has access to the Epstein papers he could have leverage over Mandelson.
